@Home Here Now I am not ashamed either and it's NOT my social restrictions. Here, if caught public urinating, you are arrested, charged as a sexual offender, and spend the rest of your life having to register as a sexual offender the rest of your life. As a Wisconsin resident, I would almost always go winter backpacking with snowshoes and/or hiking poles. Weather is never predictable. Postholing is exhausting. Hiking poles are great for stability and slippery conditions with the added benefit of pumping warm blood into your hands as you swing your arms. I would also never winter hike without tinted ski goggles. The wrap-around lenses would protect your eyes from high winds, driving snow, sleet and protects your eyes from the harmful and painful effects of the sun's UV rays reflecting off the snow (i.e. snow blindness).

When I was a park ranger, I had a whole family poo all around their campsite despite a fully functional flush bathroom 100 yds away. It was so disgusting! And they were still in the park at another campsite. So I bagged up their waste, went and wrote them a citation, kicked them out of the campground and told them to "take their s*** with them!" People are gross.

Get Susie some trekking poles, it can be more difficult for a light woman or man to keep their balance with a heavy pack. I once fell into a ice cold river try to cross and now I bring poles. Helps with steep declines as well.

Mittens are better than gloves in the cold. You can get ones in Goretex and even with a seperate index finger for shooting. Norwegian, Swedish and Russian surplus is good stuff.

@@Willy_TepesSounds very good. I have a pair of heavy wool military mitts with the trigger finger but although I do walk when it's cold the mittens are a little to much for my short jags. You could put a lot of hotties in them. ;0) I use some cheapies with fold back fingers and lots smaller. Just opted to use gloves today and found the hotties do not get to the fingers. LOL I do not do extreme hiking.

Emergency devices are good if used right, had an incident here in sweden 2 years ago where a couple was hiking in the swedish mountains. The weather changed fast, wind from the north, snow started to fall and the temprature dropped from +15C to 0C. They only had clothes for summerhikes because they were hiking in june. They pressed the SOS button and a helicopter got them out of there. Since this wasnt a real emergency they were fined 14.000SEK (aprox 1700 dollars) for that. The funniest part of this is that they only had to hike for 300 meters to get to a shelter cabin that you are allowed to use in these conditions. Map/GPS, knowledge, right gear and experience had solved their problem. I usually hike in the swedish mountains to find good fishing spots and learned that you need winter clothing upp there. If the wind comes from the north the temprature can drop below freezing point.

Winter tips for you, if your boots have a removable liner, place the liner inside an inside out bread bag, then put the liner and bag into your boots. Keep a good supply of bags with you as the bags do wear out. The added layer will help keep your feet dry. Your boots may be waterproof, but snow finds its way in around so many places one didnt think possible. If you use gators around the boot and pant leg, thats great, but try to get the pant leg over the boot as well. Mittens are great in cold weather, but keep an eye on the directions of the hand warmers, some of them are not to be used directly on the skin.

Grew up in a mountain area, lived and worked in another. You never stop learning (which is a nice way of saying messing up, hopefully in small ways). Slept in car parks, bus shelters, road repair huts... Most Mountain Rescue Teams publish a gear list, for their areas. I try and show respect to those putting their lives on the line by having the gear they ask me to take (and try to be proficient with it).

Hi Luke and Susan, This was a great follow up to the last adventure. I really enjoyed the different, yet similar, perspectives to the same adventure. I've done a bit of winter camping in Missouri and Colorado. Different climates, both cold, both snowy, the preparation is similar - but different. And the key, as you both mentioned, is staying dry. It was easier to sweat in the Rockies (more sun, higher thermal effect) , but the wet snow of the mid-west laughs at Gore-Tex as it clings and penetrates (hah! is that all you got?!) Thanks for another great vid.

I wouldn't want to rely on something like hand warmers for sustained warmth. I bought some some years ago and they failed miserably in extreme cold. You might find good ones that work, but even then, good clothing is much more reliable, always at hand and doesn't produce waste in the same way as single-use warmers. Important factor about layering is that none of the clothes should compress or be tight-fitting. This restricts blood flow and actually makes you colder. Good trip, good video. Thanks for the After the Camp discussion!

I know it was rough but you two really set good examples and standards with each trip. It is saddening that people disrespect Mother Nature. I hope to see more with both or you. Your trips give me so much pleasure and the scenery is so calming. Thank you for all the joy and videos. I am ready for spring so I can get out to our camp.

Great trip! It was good to see the Hilleberg Nammatj 2 tent getting a good 4-season work out and doing its job of sheltering you two really well!
