The ketogenic diet is controversial and extremely challenging on the body, road cycling is hard at the best of times, let alone when your body is devoid of carbohydrate as a source of fuel. To that end, Jeremy has tried riding 100 miles in complete ketosis to find out just how challenging this dietary method is to follow.

As a Type1 (insulin dependant) diabetic and in an effort to help control my blood sugars I've been keto for 7 years. At age 50 and 3 months ago I took up road cycling, I've just completed my 1st 100kms solo and fasted. Felt like I could do it again. The next day pulled up great and rode again, then every day until the next w/end where I rode 150kms over two days. Being keto allowed me to do this without eating or even having a gel. Works for me. Fantastic. I love it.

@@happytrails1963 yes both my basal and bolus rates reduced almost immediately as did my A1C (now 4.7%) I notice IS (insulin sensitivity) lasts for approx. 24 to 36hrs after say an hour ride and tbh I'm not particularly hungry after a longer (2 to 3 hr) ride either. For me keto offers lots of benefits, liked reduced insulin use and hunger, with very little in the way of down side.

I was a fat adapted cyclist when I completed the 2019 Cross Florida Ride. I rode 165 miles in a single day in a nearly fasted state. I had been in a state of ketosis for 8 months 6 months prior to the ride. Its an amazing feeling having basically all the fuel you need already onboard. You're essentially bonk proof. I also have hypoglycemia issues. I have spent the last 10 years struggling because i just could not get my internal combustion going. I tried drinking ketones first, because I heard Keto has been recom.ended for epilepsy control, as well as the annoying symptoms of autism Switched to 20 carbs a day after discovering how good the ketones made me feel...and because I wasn't going to suggest something to my son that I wasn't willing to do. HOLY COW. i have so much more energy, I'm bamboozled. A sensation of well being has descended that I hadn't felt since I was 8. Even my posture has undergone a drastic change. It's nothing short of amazing. It's been 4 weeks and I'm down 20 pounds. I don't care whether it's water, because I was definitely swollen and could t shake it. I'm sleeping better, lost my cravings and my thinking is way more clear. Who knew?!? I'm taking this on as a full.paradigm shift. Once I'm recovered from my health issues, sure I'll train.... but that's a long way off. It feels so good.to be getting my life back. β™‘

Some people just seriously THRIVE on keto. I'm a young lad with a tad of extra fat, been feeling really low on energy and depressed the last few years. But then I tried doing keto for a month (would've done more but I got cocky and the addiction kicked back in) and I was like a different person. Clearer mind, WAAAY more energy, more will to live. It's still controversial because not everyone benefits like this but among those of us that still have bodies like our ancient ancestors, keto is a life changer (and saver in some cases)

I have lost 100 pounds in the last 8 months in a very strict keto diet. I had some ups and downs and I believe now everything is OK. The main problem was about electrolytes and now I take supplements of Potassium, Magnesium and an appropriate amount of Sodium. It really worked for me and I know I can do better cycling on Keto. I'm 50 years old now and I feel great, much better than when I was 25 (at that time I was stronger and thinner). Before this keto experience I was high carb fueled all my life and it didn't work for me. Not at all: I was fat, tired, with high blood pressure and with a lot of anxiety. Now even my brain works better. Maybe it gonna be some kind of genetic predisposition about the burning of sugar or fat and I believe in that. By the way, thanks for showing us you tried the keto diet and to be sincere what about happened to you. Cheers from Brazil and keep safe.

Good job :) !! I'm in a uninterrupted keto for 3 years now. It's the best for long days! Like ski-mountaineering, trail running 50k, biking... Only when I do crossfit with HIIT I feel less power. But the rest periods are improved and shorter. I love it for the every day's life, constant energy levels, little hunger, more time between the meals, better focus and sleep. Ability to fast easily.

You need to go Keto for a full 12 weeks to become properly fat adapted. Then repeat your 100-mile ride fasted with only electrolytes. I happily ride for up to 5 hours with no food. Only have to plan for bottle refills. I could probably go longer but I've never tested my limits.

Nick, this is the most frustrating part of his series. He's not yet fat adapted but is espousing negatives and positives of a ketogenic diet. I think his obvious weight loss and increase in watts/kg says more than any anecdotal musings of what he thinks it's doing for him. He thinks cashews are ketogenic for goodness sake.

Michael Rachal cashews have enough carbs to replace spent glycogen used during hard climbs without kicking you out of ketosis (as long as only consumed during exercise). I found a great resource online talking about that years ago, shouldn't be too hard to find. Then you get the benefits of keto while still having muscular glycogen reserves for the hard parts.

Different bodies fat adapt at different rates depending on physiology, sex and sex hormones, and what your prior diet was. To say it takes 12 weeks is silly. I know people who are so fat adapted that they can do keto for a couple days and be in ketosis then switch back to carbs and repeat. High level athletes are especially good at switching. It really depends on the person and their exercise physiology paired with natural cellular metabolism. Myself? I was on keto for 6 months and NEVER became properly fat adapted. My body would sooner convert protein to glucose than use ketones. Bodies vary. His performance was pretty damn good for having just started keto so he’s definitely fat adapted, or he would have burned out way faster. Edit: and by protein I also mean my own muscle.

I did 5 years of cycling following conventional (high carb) wisdom, and now 5 years as LCHF/keto. I would never go back to high carb. I have completed 4 ultra endurance races as LCHF (although I find I do need some carbs after 1000-1500km). I can easily ride 300km fasted, on just water and electrolytes, at constant power (my FTP is the same as pre-LCHF days). Going LCHF is a lifestyle change, like going vegetarian. It takes a long time to adjust properly and understand what works for you (maybe a year). It’s not something you can fully appreciate or benefit from by doing a test over a few weeks. If you have spent your whole life fuelling your muscles with glucose, you can’t expect to switch fuel to ketones and overnight expect the same results. I had blood tests taken during the high carb 5 years, and the low carb 5 years. The difference is amazing and the results from low carb blood tests are near perfection.

Jason Sypher fair question and I probably used the wrong word I should have said β€œmuch improved and consistently within recognised limits for good health”. The main blood markers that change when you switch from high carb (standard western diet) to low carb is cholesterol and triglycerides. I high triglyceride count being a prime indicator of future cardio vascular disease, but the Triglyceride:HDL ratio is key. The closer (or below) one, the better. When I was on a high carb diet it range between 2-4 (elevated risk of heart attack and stroke, 4 was when I wasn’t training much, 2 was when I was training a lot). Since switching to low carb I have been consistently at or below 1.

Awesome video! What your doing is so hard for so many reasons. Really doubt your body is fat adapted yet even though your in ketosis. It can take weeks. So your body probably isn't burning fat as a fuel efficiently yet but your not supplying any carbs for fuel either. Almonds were a great idea. Maybe one of the nicest things about keto is you dont get the rollercoaster effect from eating carbs. Its just high energy all the time without lows unless you go low on sodium/electrolytes.

@danielneves6855 3 Ρ€ΠΎΠΊΠΈ Ρ‚ΠΎΠΌΡƒ
Top effort jeremy... wonderful scenery! Regarding my reply in the previous video, it is safe to assume doing 100 miles in ketosis is feasible. While in ketosis not only fat oxidation rates are adaptively increased but also the muscles are supplied with ketones from fatty acid ketogenesis which compensates lower glycolysis rates (Glucose sparing effect thus lower glucose oxidation rate) and so glycogen depletion isn't virtually a problem (way more relevant at higher intensities). Also, some glucose can be produced from gluconeogenic amino acids and glycerol from triglycerides (very mild gluconeogenic effect) which could sustain a minimal degree of glycolysis. Only concern I see is maintaining proper hidration and eletrolyte intake particularly in the heat. Bonking can be real regardless of glycogen status. Did you consider MCT oil? Consuming foods with high-fat content provides inefficient fuel for working muscles because of the extended period of time for digesting and absorbing regular fats. Fat digestion takes longer because fats needs to be appropriately emulsified and solubilized. Fats are then broken down into fatty acids and glycerol, which are then absorbed by the intestines. After this, these fatty acids then need to be reassembled connected with certain proteins to be transported. This process can take a long time so fats don't provide a quick release of energy. Medium-Chain Triglycerides (MCT) however, are a form of fat characterized by shorter than usual fatty acids which are digested and absorbed at a much faster rate instead of relying on nuts or nut butter sandwiches with bacon like you described. A quick supply of energy is essential and these foods will only provide energy within hours after ingestion. Let's hear what experts and pro athletes think in regard to ketosis.
@charliemackenzie3647
@charliemackenzie3647 3 Ρ€ΠΎΠΊΠΈ Ρ‚ΠΎΠΌΡƒ
MCT could also lead to "nasty pants" situation. So it may take some time for the body to adjust to absorbing and utilising without the "unfortunate" side affects. Nut butter /MCT mix could be worth a try?
@danielneves6855
@danielneves6855 3 Ρ€ΠΎΠΊΠΈ Ρ‚ΠΎΠΌΡƒ
@@charliemackenzie3647 Thanks for your reply. I’ve read about it. Apparently, it’s one of the side effects of MCT oil supplementation. Also, MCT oil can be risky for athletes with certain conditions like diabetes. The price is another disadvantage. A supplement worth mentioning are ketone salts or ketone esters. In this regard, there is a company - HVMN - that has been doing a substantial research in ketone ester supplementation. They are trying to improve synthesis and production scale to make ketone esters as cheap as possible. With an inexpensive ketone ester drink, MCT oil would get outdated. Ketone ester absorption simply surpasses that of MCT oil. However, atm is really expensive and may have side effects as well. There is a rumor that some WorldTour Teams already used ketone esters in water bottles. They play with marginal gains and since ketone ester drink is just a supplement after all, it isn’t considered a bannable substance. Regarding your question, I honestly don't know. Despite my curiosity with nutrition and biochemistry, I never attempted low carb. Nevertheless, could be a solution to allow the body to adjust to the MCT oil by mixing with some nut butter.

I got diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure about a year ago. I went Keto in order to lower blood sugar and lose weight. The weight came off, the AIC dropped from 7.8 to 4.5 in a few months and my energy went up. I see a lot of BS about going into ketosis with $50 a week drinks and other stuff... cut carbs/sugars and see how your body reacts. I added spinach and bok choy, while eliminating bread, potatoes, sugar and it works... would not do it if I was suffering from low blood sugar, that sounds dangerous. Also it is hell trying to plan meals and do something healthy and low carb... shopping can be a painful experience. Doctor wanted me to go low salt as well, but research I did determined that the US is nuts with the low sodium diets that actually raise odds of heart attacks and strokes dramatically when the entire reasoning for them is that it can reduce your blood pressure "up to 10%". OK, I use other spices and don't worry about it since I was about ready to commit suicide trying to find low sodium food in the supermarket. Rest of the world recommendation is more than double the American Heart association recommendation and European research indicates under 7500mg a day isn't going to do anything bad for you... the blood pressure bit is a symptom, not the problem. Post heart attack patients in the US on low sodium diets DOUBLE the rate of having another heart attack... wtf. Go for a bike ride and chill...
