@Neil Downe No, I was not born here. I have lived here twice. All together I have lived here for about 23 years. If you really want to you should give it a try. If you have any specific questions you can just ask. If I get notification you have posted a question, I will try to answer it. If you get no reply, then I probably wasn't notified there is a question at all.

I'm glad you showed the power plug-ins in this video. They hold a special place in my memory. We moved to AK in 2011 and when we first went to "Wally World" in Fairbanks, it was summertime. I saw those plug-in's and a LOT of RV's parked in the "far reaches" of the parking lot. My first thought (as we were RV'er's at that time) was that Walmart had their own campground thing going on. I still laugh about that to this day!

Believe me we live in Calgary Canada and you get sick/tired of snow/winter really fast.Because by mid September we get the first frost and around Halloween we get snow that starts to hang around(The sun is to week to melt it by then) We do get chinooks but that causes icy side walks/Headaches and falling is high risk.Spring doesn't usually come till May ish. Summers are very short/Winters are very long.

I worked up there 66-68 and we found that the warmer it got, the slicker the ice. At -20 the ice was almost like wet pavement. At -40 there was no problem at all. At -50 you tried not to go out. I was Military Police.

Well....hello....if you click on my pic...that pic was taken in Sitka ....proud to have lived in AK for 2 years. And we almost LIVED in Fairbanks had my wife accepted the job at Tanana Valley Medical....this was back in the late 80’s....so yeah, we visited Fairbanks and Anchorage before settling on Sitka...and yes....we DROVE over the Chenna River....never forgot it as the transport giddily informed us of the unusual bridge... I also remember the permafrost homes that were sinking..... Great scenery....awesome country... They wanted a 5 year commitment which would have changed our lives....wife probably would have left my butt up there. In any case, good stuff.... Been there , done that! And yes, that’s a 180lb halibut pic...I’m the guy in white.

Hey hey. You make very enjoyable vids, thank you! I know all the places you show very well......been here 24 years. But I have one correction about the daylight gain. We gained 5 min. 30 seconds today. It takes a few weeks to build up to that glorious daylight gain of 7 min. Solstice starts out with a gain of just a few seconds. Thanks again for what you do.

Very interesting, I came to the USA many years ago from "sunny" Egypt, settled in Texas, but spent a year in Chicago (coldest year of my life). I'm one of these guys who can wacth National Geographic forever, so I'm very intrigued by Alaska and Fairbanks and I'm considering moving there....but also it's scary (maybe I meet a bear or a wolf). I'm retired now...and currently watching videos like yours (which are very good) to see if I have the guts to make such a move by next summer. Cheers.

When I was a school kid we had a guy come as a kind of career day. The guy was a diver on base at Eielson. That year a Cat went through the ice and he had the undeserved privileged of recovering the body of the driver. Poor guy was obviously distraught over it. It was plenty cold but such a heavy tractor on that ice was enough to end one life prematurely.

Hey, interesting video about Alaska. Me and my family live in Sweden. Normally we have snow where Im from, but not this year.. miss it alot! But yours is different, I heard from my brother in law who lives in Alaska. He said that U guys usually cant make snowballs and that stuff since you have low humidity during the winter and therefore dry snow. Anyhow, we went to Fairbanks during last summer, Alaska has a stunning nature, and we plan to do a winter trip at some point. Interesting that the gravel messes your windshield up so much, doesn't happen here in the places that use gravel. Your gravel have to be of a bigger dimension than our.. Salt is a nightmare here, since the temperature goes up and down, so åt some point it does more harm that good since it freeze again. And it messes the cars up pretty badly with rust. To change the windshield here is cheap, usually the insurance company for cars cover the expence since it reduces the risk of a car crash. Thanks for the video!! Greetings from Sweden

I commented on the earlier video how hardy Fairbanksians- Fairbanksinies- Fairbanksaani- People that live in Fairbanks are, and watching this now I am mesmerized. I have lived in San Diego my whole life, I whine when it gets below 60 degrees. I kind of understand the allure of living there, the nature, the adventure, it makes sense; but the challenges of living in a climate like that! It’s like living on Pluto. I am not sure “Hardy” is a strong enough word, but it is meant as a serious compliment for all of you that live there. I hope to visit someday, and honestly I would like to experience it in the winter (for a day or two). I will be the shivering Californian with about 63 pounds of clothes on.

I do recall those below temperatures living in Fairbanks and North Pole, Alaska the plug-ins did not exist when I lived up there. I only recall the Airport USPS building when I worked there from 1981 to 1984, and my time at Fort Wainwright from 1978-1981. 51+ below the coldest I remember at Ft. Wainwright. I still live in Alaska's south-central area, Wasilla/Palmer. Stay warm this coming winter. The Alaska school systems: the interior school system may be better than what is located in other places in Alaska. During my time living in Fairbanks and North Pole areas, the main point that stands out the most is the people-friendly, sociable not a rat race mentality like down south-central Alaska. Nearing 44 years in the Last Frontier.

Bike Race Baudi Poverty is relative. Some people choose to live “poor” but rich lives far off the grid. We had a farm when I was a kid. We were technically poor but we had cows and grain crops and a garden. One butchered cow can go a long way. I actually hated steak we ate it so often.

The reason we don't use salt here in Fairbanks is bc it melts the ice than it freezes again. They use salt in Anchorage bc it doesn't get as cold. I'm in the military up here on fort Wainwright.
