What next for the wannabe F1 giant that's been part-sold

If a wannabe Formula 1 giant is on the right track, would it be part-sold and should it be championing a season that ended considerably less competitive than it started as one with ‘no negatives at all’?
It’s what you might be asking about Aston Martin, which towards the end of 2023 made a significant announcement: outside investors were coming in for the first time since Lawrence Stroll’s consortium bought the assets of Force India in 2018.
The news followed quite intense speculation about Stroll’s intentions for the team, and came at the back of a season in which Aston Martin had genuinely been F1’s most improved team - but had also been on a worrying decline.
There had been unsubstantiated rumours for a while that, five years on from creating what would morph into what we now know as Aston Martin, Stroll was looking for a way out.
That also coincided with questions about his son Lance’s future after a rough run through the middle of the season.
But the message from Aston Martin is clear: Lawrence is going nowhere, Aston Martin the brand is going nowhere, and this team is dead serious about its intentions.

I agree. Their improvement is kind of shocking. Sure they ended up 5th in the championship but in a season where 2-5 was so close that is damn impressive. For me the biggest disappointment was Monaco, where a more aggressive strategy would probably have won them the race. Otherwise this was the team's second strongest season going right back to the Jordan days, behind only the '99 season when they won 2 races and were title contenders until impressively late in the season. The drop-off in performance toward the end was worrying, but I read it as AM having got their car so fundamentally right to begin with that there were only small incremental gains to be made whereas Mercades and McLaren made much bigger strides because their cars were very poor earlier in the season so there was more scope for improvement.

What I seen in the season is that Aston started the season with an illegal car because the front wing flaps was to flexible. Maybe other parts also we don't know much about it because it was a secret move by FIA. Aston was force to change the front wing concept so they did lose the corner speed and car balance but first if all the amazing tyre handle and management. After came the new tyres and they totally was lost except when the temperature was cold like Zandvoort so is confirm Alonso very small working window report. What happened After this is what really counts, because they had to adjust the sidepods, floor, rear wing literally the whole car to the new front wing. They made a lot of test and we seen amazing improvements at end of the season and even Stroll was fast and confident again. Honestly I except Aston start strong the season with all those test, data and the smaller gearbox also will be a huge improvement not just in weight, but better floor.

Realistically, the thing that matters most is the car. Checo had the worst season of his career and still finished P2 in the standings. Stroll is capable of winning a championship if there was a worse driver next to him, and they built a RB19 level dominant car. Aston Martin aren't going to be fighting for championships, or even race wins in 2024 or 2025, 2026 is their next chance to nail regulations, so until then it really doesn't matter who's driving, as long as the engineering team is good, working hard on the 2026 concept and has the infrastructure to see it through.

With Aston not only wanting to be a force in F1 but now spinning up a works hypercar program as well I think Lawrence needed some money from somewhere. The money from the sale is probably earmarked to get the hypercar program started and then getting Aramco to pay for at least some of the F1 teams budget makes sense if Lawrence is in it for the long term. i believe that when AM brought their car to the track for testing they were still building the AM23 and adding what they may have thought was an advanced car that should have taken them well into the season, perhaps even close to the mid summer break. i dont think they were prepared for other teams to advance as quickly as they did and AM just werent prepared for it. maybe look at it like the brawn gp car of 09, when they brought just about all they had and just hoped no other team could catch up with them. brawn were very lucky that they got as far ahead as they did, perhaps partly because the other teams were complaining too much about the double diffuser instead of just designing one for their cars. anyway, its possible that AM thought their car was better than it actually was their upgrade packages were too far away for them to do anything much about it. its also telling that they are keeping lance even though if they want to get higher up the grid they need 2 strong drivers instead of one doing most of the heavy lifting, allowing the other to coast just because their daddy is the face of the team! its like verstappen being almost 300 points ahead of perez as opposed to lewis hamilton being only 59 points ahead of george russell. fernando had well over 100 points more than his much slower team mate. so a stronger second seat is a must if AM is to advance up the order.

Stroll is fed up because he wants his team to be seen as British. As a Canadian even he should be able to work out that isn’t going to happen.

Maybe Mr. Strulovitch being the successful businessman that he is just sold enough to get his initial investment back. The team's value is now nearly 10x what he initially put in. Wouldn't that just mean he's in it free and clear?

I hate this soap-opera gossip about F1. If Haas (who's owner hardly gives a damn about F1) isn't going anywhere, than neither is Aston-Martin. Not to mention the new factory isn't even finished yet. It's coming into full use next season isn't it?

It is very simple - Lawrence is in the business of selling cars, and the biggest market for the type of cars that he sells is the Middle East. AM waining in the second half of the year is probably down to the move to the new facilities. I expect that they will also struggle in 2024 as they are getting the new tunnel in and understanding the difference between old and new. It will probably be 25/26 before the benefits are reaped.

Just look at Stroll's net worth, he is quite a poor guy by F1 standards, and running an unprofitable F1 team is just a thing he couldn't afford for a long time.

A lot of people just hate on Aston Martin because it's clearly a vehicle for Daddy Stroll to have a team for his son to race in. Sheer bitterness and jealousy. They carefully ignore the fact that F1 has been a "rich man's sport" since pretty much it's inception.

If you give up development early than you can immediately focus on next year. If you're serious about being a champ and have $ then you would immediately shift to next year if you don't honestly see yourself being in real contention for this year. It's actually smart. If your not 1st your last.

To Lawrence, Lance is just a business asset. That part of his investment isn't going to plan, so he's spreading his bets whilst still investing in Aston as a team.

Arctos Partners LP, a sports team focused private equity fund, has acquired minority stake in a number of USA’s top professional sports team…Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings and Boston Red Sox…69% growth in past year to $6.6B. Suggests they see major growth in the American market for F1? Very much like Ryan Reynolds and his group acquiring 20% in Alpine F1 this year.
