The "when supernatural battles became comonplace" monolog was such a shock to me because the way everyone around the mc talked about it didn't feel like they were that bothered by the way he speaks just a bit annoyed, but this scene made me realize how much resentment can build up from "quirky" behavior, the voice actor NAILED it even if the rumors about it being done in 1 take are false I don't think many VA's could pull off the emotions of the character the way she did, a 10/10 performance.

I think it's quite believable that Hayami-san did it in one take, but it's probably not replicable even by herself. Kind of one of those "in the moment" things if you get what I mean. That little clip in the running scene of A Place Further Than the Universe where Shirase's shoe falls off but then Kimari picks it up for her is so special to me. That scene together with the scene where he loses his arm turned Erwin into one of my favourite anime characters of all time. It proved that he isn't just all talk when he says hes willing to sacrifice everything and die for the mission. No in the moment he is almost swallowed up alive by a titan and could have easily died right there he doesn't even flinch or look in the direction of the titan for one second. In what could have been his final words he only urges his men to carry on with not one thought of survival.

For me that scene was extremely cathartic. As a Dutch person, our 'direct' straight to the point no bullshit nature and attitude is the exact opposite of the way of being of the Japanese. Because of that, such a thing as a chuuni cannot exist in our society. They'd be ridiculed and laughed at and pulled straight within 5 seconds after uttering a chuuni-esque rubbish sentence. So seeing chuuni people in Anime being allowed, tolerated and/or ignored by their surroundings in Anime always felt a bit off to me. ""Why isn't anyone calling them out on this bullshit?! Fucking timid useless people omg!". This scene, thus, felt better than sex to me. It showed me that the people around chuuni idiots DO think they're weird, and they aren't just Skyrim NPC's that you can just rob by crouching in front of them as you pickpocket them in broad daylight as they're speaking to you.

I believe that was one of the things that made Saori Hayami more of a household name. She definitely had her fair share of roles prior to 2014, but after that point you can see the amount of work she gets skyrocket from that year onward. It's also the scene from inou-battle that people remember the most, so she damn well deserves the credit there.

@@world4saker she did try to understand that's the whole point of the speech, she was frustrated and jealous that tomoyo could easily understand, she straight up said it when she told tomoyo that she was in love andou. Hatoko is a smart girl, she's just not as creative as him. She didn't ignore any of it either cause I believe it was episode two they were doing a "monthly powers check-up" where she fought with chifuyu using her powers over the elements, she clearly had been practicing with them probably in order just to get closer to andou. One might think she was being creative but I saw as more scientific given that she chose to turn fire and earth into magma

What makes the supernatural are commonplace scene all the more heart breaking to me is how much she clearly tried to understand him, she remembered it all even if she couldn't understand it. As someone who often goes on unhinged technical rants to people who rarely listen, even if shes venting her frustration, it is genuinely heartwarming to know that she was infact listening to every word he said.

19:23 I think this happens for me quite a lot. There are few anime I regard as being able to make me cry "with every episode" and those would be Violet Evergarden, Gakuen Babysitters, and My Roomate Is A Cat. They have their sad moments but more often than not, it's just the purely wholesome, touching and bittersweet moments that make me cry - like genuine tears streaming down my face, crying. Not just teary eyed. Or I'll hear the soundtracks from some animes and feelings just overwhelm me and I feel my nose start to be stuffy and I start getting teary eyed. That happens *everytime* I hear "Across The Violet Sky" for instance (which is also from Violet Evergarden).

To me, Gojo and Geto's conversation in Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 episode 5 was a moment that left me speechless. The way Gojo slowly starts to lose his cool and begins to yell while Geto stays exactly the same, the cars around them start speeding by faster and faster, the camera starts zooming in closer to their faces every time a car passes by, the animation looking more unorthodox and distorted as the scene goes on, and Geto turning around and leaving while knowing of Gojo's hesitation to kill him then and there, it all makes the scene so perfect and tense.

My favorite thing on Flowers of Evil were the flowers, the spiky/fuzzy little eyeballs on stalks that all turned to look at you, a whole field of eyes just watching you, it was so surreal yet so interesting, as for the artwork, once you learn the process of how it was made, it gives you an appreciation of the effort it took, as far as I know, it is the only anime that used rotoscoping to make it's characteristic look, and this was before they had auto rotoscoping tools or AI that can convert live video into anime or illustrated style videos, so it took a very long process to make, that's why the art style looks so realistic, cause it's live acting with added illustrated details like the flowers themselves, that gives it it's unique appearance.

OH MY GOD I can't believe the Inou Battle scene lives in Gigguk brain as well. I've said in the past that the entire show is worth a watch JUST FOR THAT SCENE, and I return to it once in a while because it's just so on point. The entire emotional breakdown hits even harder after the entire arc of her character, her unrequited love and her constant and futile attempts to get closer and understand him only for a complete dismiss of her tries. It's being conceived in the scene as well, as she knows every word and every term without a single mispronounciation, only to admit defeat- She can't understand Juu-kun no matter how hard she tries. This gets touched later on as Hatoko is feeling extremely guilty for it. She feels like it's her role to take care and understand others, she feels bad about feeling her own emotions, even if they're justified as hell. Hatoko is the definition of being the most compassionate to others, but in that she abandons herself, her feelings, and her needs.

One anime moment I always come back to is episode 5 of Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash. This entire situation the characters are in, the grieve they feel and how they handle it on their own culminates in this confrontation near the bath house. It's such an incredicle moment of two people sharing their hurt and grieving together that you wouldn't expect what nowadays could be seen as "yet anothet isekai". This scene lives rent-free in my head.

@@WateryStar same for me. I don't read LN but I made an exeption for this one. It's unfortunate that the author lets the story meander in such a way that doesn't allow any tied ends to big mysteries. So after 12 volumes I dropped it. Nevertheless, the anime is still a unique experience and holds up really well.

Honestly, my favorite example of powerful English voice acting comes from an abridged series lol. SAO Abridged was always fun, but my god Suguha’s voice actress kills it in the most recent episode (episode 17, I think) during that scene where they figure out they’ve been playing together. It’s just such a raw performance on her part

It takes a while I feel before the character development starts to be apparent, but the development definitely is there in the abridged series. I feel like Kirito was way too much of a blank character in the original series and the abridged does a good job of remedying that issue

what hits so hard about inou battle in that particular scene is despite the fact that she goes on and on about how much she doesn't understand anything he's ever said, she still goes on and on about all the things he has said. she never stopped listening and trying to understand him. sure it's all nonsense to her but it means enough to him that she took the time to not only remember it all but tried to understand it. the show was a typical harem setup where you know only one girl can win in the end but truly none of the others really had a chance. and that's saying something considering she wasn't even my favorite of the lot.

Your section on Flowers of Evil perfectly embodies why I hate the anime community sometimes. It's not all anime watchers, obviously, but I do think it is a majority that will harp on certain shows every once in a while that try to step out of the shadow of the mainstream to do something different. A unique art style, a show uniquely edited or written, a unique story template, characters that act not like how you would expect, etc. We should encourage innovation in anime, not seek to mock it and bury it every time we feel something off about a show. There's SO MUCH of the same in this industry, it makes me sick to see the same plot, the same fights, the same characters being recycled endlessly for profit. Sometimes it feels like a lot of anime fans exist in permanent complacency.

Ditto.... and I mean, hell, the very few first frames showing up on my screen have turned me into a crying mess in an instant (and, sure, I might be in a vulnerable spot right now and it might contribute to that a lot- but that series has made me cry more times than it ever had the right to back when I watched it anyway, so--). I think it's because of how uplifting it is. It's sheer, unadulterated *life* in a way few things are and directed flawlessly to show and share that energy. It doesn't make us cry because it's sad or painful or distressting - it makes us cry because it resonates so deeply it's like touching a raw nerve every time, regardless of whether that resonance is due to past experience or thought about the present or the future. It just absolutely *rings*.

The running scene from A Place Further Than the Universe hits me every time but not for the reasons you mentioned. For years now I've been struggling with crippling depression. Because of it, I've been feeling my life at a complete standstill and I think the running scene for me was such a cathartic experience I didn't know I needed. Even though Mari was just bored and wanted to make the most of her youth years, a different reason for being stagnant from myself, the journey she took from stagnant to "in motion" just hit me so hard. Pushed me to fight back and force my life into motion. Still in that process but I'll forever be thankful for A Place Further Than the Universe.

I can't speak for anyone else, but personally I dropped the anime and read the manga because the rotoscoping method they employed caused me literal physical discomfort while watching it. When it premiered I was very hype to watch it having heard a lot of good stuff about the story from people who'd read the manga, but after two episodes I just couldn't. If they'd used any of a number of different alternate equally effective, equally avant-garde methods of visual presentation I'd have had no issues.

@@chiblast100x I understand that the art style is weird and uncanny, and it's reasonable for people to not liking it, yet I want to point out that "physical discomfort" is exactly the point they were going for when they choose to use rotoscoping for Aku no Hana. It was a very bold choice and fit perfectly with the theme of the story. It might also be a hack solution for the limited budget they had (Aku no Hana did not have a big enough fanbase for big budget animation) but that limit push them to be creative, leading to ep 7 being wayyy better than anyone could expected.
@hellryderplayz1854

@@hotguy1671 Ya'll missed the fucking point with the animation style. It was MEANT to look weird and discomforting, BECAUSE IT'S NOT A COMFORTING SHOW. If you know the story, you'd know how disturbing it is; how the main character falls into a rabbit hole of increasingly evil/perverted acts being manipulated by the brown haired girl. That discomfort was meant to be portrayed in the show through the animation. The weird camera angles, the realistic and yet sometimes ugly looking characters, etc. All of it was meant to give the viewers a feel of realism and yet an innate feeling of discomfort. For those who are saying that the anime production messed it up, NO THEY DIDNT, THE MANGAKA ASKED THEM TO ANIMATE IT LIKE THIS. The animation is a stylistic choice that the MANGAKA wanted to implement BECAUSE of the themes explored in the anime, but yea sure drop the anime because the characters don't look like waifu's and there arent cool visual shots (even tho there are tbh, literally the scene discussed by garnt is an amazing visual representation of an emotional outburst). I personally loved the animation because it matched with the themes explored in the anime. I arguably like the anime even more than the manga especially because of the animation.
