Windows 10 was never truly going to be the 'last Windows' because they still have to get to the version that has a paid monthly subscription model like they did with office (which would get them in too much trouble without a 'new OS' and they probably still want to do the 'if you didnt download it directly off the windows store you can not execute it ever' policy they tried to add with win8 (which was scrapped before release due to dev backlash).

Unacceptable to have such a big mess getting in the user's way. You have to fight it by disabling useless features, block unwanted telemetry, tweaking settings, just to be able to have some freedom using your favorite apps. Great review as always

Why? Simple. Because Microsoft, like Apple and Mozilla, are now in the business of REMOVING user choice rather than adding it. If there is a useful feature or something you can customize, you can rest assured it will be removed before too long. Those three companies (and many others, to be fair) act as if they are geniuses and we are idiots, and that they know much better than we do about what will be useful to us. They do not view it as us choosing to (purchase and) use their software; they view it as them allowing us unworthy peons to use their software, and that we should be grateful for whatever we are given.

It‘s not just the apps. With action center on the right and widgets on the left its even harder to maintain. If you desperately need it there is definitely a third party software for it. But it‘s expensive to keep supporting every possible configuration for the

@@NazmusLabs In terms of overall number of users of Windows, unfortunately, I'd be willing to bet people moving their taskbar is very rare. I'm annoyed at the loss of the feature, but I worked helpdesk at a company with > 100,000 employees, for three years, easily 100+ calls a day. In all that time, I don't think I saw _one_ person with their taskbar moved. Everyday, general, non-enthusiast users just don't do it.

Yeah unless Microsoft undoes that particular change I’m sticking with windows 10 till the end. Hopefully by 2025 either Microsoft will finally get their act together and stop making windows unnecessarily shitty or Proton support for Windows games will be good enough where Linux will finally be a viable daily driver os for those of us who don’t want Microsoft dictating how we want our desktop layouts to be.

System76 also have their own laptops and PC much like apple does, so, yep there is a big company doing it and is called System76 :). And just to inform you more about it, as a person having used both Windows 10 and Pop Os! I can say Pop OS is way better in than WIndows. Try to use it once, and pretty sure you will ditch windows 10 forever unless you really rely on some Microsoft technologies.

Well yes, but actually no.... They have been pushing MS Teams drastically throughout the pandemic, they seen that colleges on average, use Teams more than Zoom or Skype. To me it's obvious why you'd do that, Zoom basically wants to spy on your every move, and Skype is practically dead at this point, MS Teams doesn't show what program you're on or how long you've spent looking at something. The Zoom app also asks for literally every permission under the sun and Teams just wants the necessities. Store data, access camera and microphone, use Wi-Fi (there is a few missing here). That and the fact that MS Teams has upstaged Skype for some time now, which in my honest opinion was Microsoft's plan all along. Sorry for the novel, but thanks for taking time to read it.

Good news that Linus skipped over for some reason is that the task bar can be set back to the lower-left corner again as normal. No need for centered start button if you don't want it.

Man fuck the centered taskbar, the bigger issue is they locked it to the bottom of the screen. Why? What purpose does it serve? Same here. I switched to side task bar a few years ago. I have Ultrawide screens and realized just how much real-estate was being taken up by the task bar stretching all the way across the bottom of my screen.

Wouldn't it be nice if they actually designed and programmed the operating system with security in mind from the start? Maybe if they did that, then we wouldn't need monthly security updates from day zero until end-of-life and beyond. Requiring secure boot won't help if the OS can be exploited via other means.

@@nomore6167 it is a first step towards more security. security is expensive and even secure boot is partially broken assuming a physical attacker. Secure boot also influences the OS during runtime. You cannot simply unload and load unsigned kernel modules. So it mitigates some low-level kernel attacks. One should combine it with encryption and TPM (measured boot) and ideally with other countermeasures like dm-verity (at least on Linux).

@@AJThePro99 'Secure boot' is a setting in the bios, that checks the software (OS) for a signature to verify its "trustworthiness." windows and macOS always include signatures, but not all Linux distributions are savvy enough to do so, and so most Linux installation guides recommend turning the feature off in your bios. and 'dual boot' is when you install 2 operating systems on your machine. Each time you start up your computer, you can choose which OS to boot into, and switching is as easy as restarting your machine.

actually, making languages more user-friendly is a noble and worthy goal. I say this as a linguistics major after studying around 10 languages and using 3 in my day-to-day life (Russian, English and German). there's no real reason to use a hard spelling system - spelling is completely arbitrary, like all of language. it's all literally made up and agreed upon by us as the users of the language. there's no "natural laws" that dictate how a word is said or written - only common usage. there's no God-given dictionary which lays down the laws - there's just a bunch of linguists that, ideally, try to keep up with the society and its demands. the only problem is that the society is a lot more conservative than most linguists, and thus resists spelling reforms that could make things so much easier for everybody and save countless thousands of hours nationwide. for example - German, Finnish and Belorussian are so much easier to use. if you hear a word, you instantly know how to spell it, and if you read a word, you instantly know how to pronounce it. Germans didn't use to have that till the late 20 century - but they agreed on a language reform, and made stuff more logical and consistent, and what do you know, people didn't stop reading Goethe all of a sudden. Russian spelling is a bit trickier - you always know how to pronounce something you've just read, but most natives make mistakes when writing stuff down. mind you, it's the same 10-15 mistakes over and over again because some of the rules are just way too hard and analytical. once again, the linguists have proposed a couple of reforms to make it easier - but the society is just too damn conservative and knows too little about linguistics to understand. spelling is like holy scripture to them, even though nobody knows how to spell 3 years after they leave school. but it's nowhere as bad as English - I mean, spelling is so damn hard that spelling bees are a thing for you guys! it's all just thousands of wasted hours for everyone who has to deal with this system, and you guys suffer the most - most non-natives learn words by sight while reading, not naturally by sound, like you do. so most non-natives don't have to fight their instinct to "spell it like you hear it" (the whole idea behind alphabet), while you guys have to.

@@sybsygstgstsgysg5330 I do, but it in every joke there's a grain of truth! as for "re-learning English", that's the whole idea with proper language reform: it adapts the rules to the way people actually use the language. you know how people walk on grass and create a new, shorter and more comfortable path, if the intended paved path is badly designed - too long, too winding, etc? well, good urban planners re-design the paved path to match the so-called "desire path" of those who walk there. the same thing should happen with language - the rules of a language should adapt to the needs and natural proclivities of its speakers, not the other way around. that way, you don't need to re-learn anything. if you and other speakers consistently and easily follow a certain rule, it shouldn't change - it works well. if, however, you and a lot of other speakers consistently fail to follow a certain rule, this means it's probably unnecessary, too hard, not intuitive, etc. this is the kind of rule that language reform should tackle and change.

I'm still on Windows 7 and don't plan on changing until I absolutely need to upgrade software (or purchase new software) which no longer supports Win7. There's simply no reason for me to "upgrade" to Windows 10 or beyond (unless I need software which doesn't support Win7). I'm seriously considering Linux or MacOS for when I do need to make the change.

@@nomore6167 Most likely steamdeck and its impact on proton which itself is evolving. Proton support is going to skyrocket if steamdeck continues to do well, and even if not its clear that valve is putting the time in to making it a big deal. On top of that steamdeck means more linux userbase on steam, which means more motivation for native linux ports as well. I really hope linux is the future of pc gaming becuase I'm really sick of windows forcing me to run and download things I don't want on my pc period.

Tech companies can't quite seem to grasp the concept that many people still want to use computers, not tablets or phones, to do most computer-related things. Yes, some people are perfectly happy ditching their computer and using a tablet exclusively. But many more people still want to use a computer for reasons such as having a useful keyboard and mouse, having a much larger monitor, not having to frequently plug in a cable to charge it, not having to buy a new battery for it every year, and, of course, being able to replace a single component when something breaks or when you want to upgrade.

Windows is so good but.... I hate how they try and force changes that make things "Easier". I had to look up a tutorial just to set up a new laptop without logging into a Microsoft account. I try to disabling the windows 10 bloatware that always comes back after every small update. Why do I have to fight my PC? The bloatware can be stopped by either deleting them from your Microsoft account or by turning autoupdate off. I have autoupdate off on my pc so deleted apps don’t come back unless I decide to reinstall them.

Hi uglier version of me, that is just exactly what i have been wondering. Do not laugh at me but... the taskbar locked to bottom is biggest deal to me from things mentioned, rest should be pretty easy to delete. I just gotta have it on left side on my ultrawide dual monitor setup. When it comes to OS more is less to me, i run both linux and windows, if they would not put so much of poop in windows 10 i would not have to do that.

Most people don't care enough but that's also why there's "express" installation on other programs and "custom" / "advanced" for people that want to choose what bloatware to install. ok, the virtual desktop thing I can see MANY uses for. Especially so with the working from home thing expanding. zero surprise at the teams integration, my employer transitioned to it wholesale during the coof, I doubt they were the only one. Thing is, if it's auto-login/load-up then i'm hitting the setting menu in that so damned hard something WILL break (hopefully teams). There's a reason i run on afk most of the time when running delicate processes, I don't need even MORE pop-ups I can't disable from happening when I am half way into a multi monitor 3-4 spreadsheet deep data verification.

You can boot it in Legacy Mode without Secure Boot or TAP 2.0 Basically, you need to create a bootable Windows 10 USB drive and then replace the install.wim file in the ‘sources’ folder in Windows 10 USB with the install.wim file from Windows 11 ISO image. You can just click on Setup.exe and just upgrade. No need to even select from boot menu

I sure hope they allow an option to disable focusing on new windows that pop up. If you are typing in an app and another window pops up, it steals the window of focus. How hard can it be to determine that in the past 500ms to 1 full second that a key stroke was detected and that the window of focus should not be given to the new window.

There are 3 things I want. For Windows to stop spying on me, more contrast in scroll bars (I can't see it half the time as my eyes get older), and for it to either allow me to save as a DBF in Excel or allow me to use the plugin that does it for me. Yes, I know almost noone uses DBFs anymore and the file format is older than my fading eyes, but they are still used in mapping and a Vlookup is a lot more convenient to check and tweek than a join.

Nobody realizes that maybe the industry is trying to get rid of PCs since Laptops can do what PCs can do now, Win 11 has features like your Phone or Laptop and they're going with that "Trend" and little do people know how on-the-go connection will be wanted by people in future once we're all using the Internet Satellite Grid which is going to be integrated into everything including Google Cloud and Microsoft Cloud, it's stupid they keep using the Pandemic as an excuse even when they were always gonna do this... but nevertheless this is what it feels like they're wanting to make happen so u can Game or do anything anywhere in future. Even Work Places they won't need to buy big chunky PCs anymore just monitors and laptops then u just plug the laptops into the screens, i think it's over for the chunky Towers, one of the main reasons we had the Towers was for Floppy Drives then CD Drives but those at this point are pretty much obsolete lol, Tech is always going to grow smaller and smaller including computers.

thats been pretty much every windows release since 7. i was getting fed up with os bloat as far back as xp. i just want an os that gives me the bare minimum to run software i actually want to use, and stay out of my way the rest of the time. they want to turn it into a content delivery platform so they can milk you with subscriptions and collect the kickbacks. this is not my definition of an operating system.

Really? I've been asking for intelligent memorisation of windows, and generally better handling of window management, for years. On that alone, this is good upgrade. The UI also looks much fresher and more modern but I know that's subjective. The best thing about these improvements? They're free.

they want users on locked down platforms that they control. that way they can use your manufactured ignorance of the platform to jack you. pc is as close to an open platform as there is right now, even though its getting more and more locked down and cpus come with integrated rootkits that you cant control. laptops are kind of the foot in the door, where they can use the necessities of systems integration as an excuse for even more lockdown.

i found this channel a few days ago after reviving my old laptop from uni and it's so helpful and accessible for a non-techie like me! i can talk guitar components all day, but anything last 1960 make's my head spin hahaha. thanks for all you do, guys! it'd be great to have more content on what one can get out of older laptops (mine is an hp pavilion i3 2.1 8gb from 2015); the good bad and ugly of these machines in terms of what they can do! perhaps windows snubbing older machines will lead to a rise in linux users

i probably only use a fraction of the features that came with windows 10, and i only used Edge to download a different browser. i even turned the new news feature on the task bar when the latest update forced it on me, i don't need crap like that

Yep! I have half of Windows 10 disabled and its a pain in the butt. This is just a bunch more features I will have to figure out how to disable. Not to mention I bet they found better ways to track your usage. Microsoft = Borg and they are assimilating our data turning us in to the collective... haha

I agree. I might be a home user. But I run a business style domain netowork, and like to have complete control of all the workstations. I might sound old and stodgey, but I really don't like any of this new crap. I don't want bing and MS Store and office 365. I like my office 2003 which never expires, I like using outlook for my email, and I love having systems which work offline, without an internet connection.

@@dancoulson6579 Last version of Microsoft Office I had was 97... been using Open Office and Libre Office ever since I transitioned from Word 97. And I loathe Outlook. Gmail sure isn't better in terms of privacy, but at least it is better in terms of usability... should get around to hosting my own email sooner rather than later, I host my own for pretty much everything else (e.g. local Gitlab, NextCloud, etc...), but e-mail is a bit of an extra pain to keep properly secure.

@@zvxcvxcz if you haven't used Outlook since Office 97 then you shouldn't speak about how functional it is. I love Outlook 2019. Emails, tasks and agenda are all really well designed and synced across my devices flawlessly. It really helps me prioritize and get through a busy day efficiently.

@Bare _ Gamer - Errr... I never said it was. Didn't BSD appear sometime around '77/'78 and later changed to become more linux-esque having started out as a version of Unix? AND didn't Mr. Torvalds get around to coming out with his first version of linux in the early '90s? IIRC it appeared around the same time as Wimpslow 3.1. And all the time Mr. Gates was trying to make MS less user-changeable while linux was slowly becoming more "P'n'P" and user-friendly. It wasn't until the late '90s that linux started becoming slightly more mainstream and still has a long way to go. I think Whingedope is becoming more looking like user-friendly versions of linux while MS, Google and Apple are all trying to "lock" their versions of OS's so we can't change anything. That's all.....

@@ANIME-ih5pt Align the icons to the left, the Windows 11 docs on Microsoft's website says the ability to move the entire taskbar itself will be disabled though. A lot of people liked either putting it up top, or moving the entire thing to the left because since 16:9 became popular it helps preserve vertical screen real estate.

@@cantin8697 yes. On any 16:9 monitor there's a lot more free space on your left or your right. You let that space work by putting taskbar there and get more space vertically. I can't imagine a reason to waste limited (AND more useful) vertical space for a taskbar. If this bullshit stays, i'm not updating. And i was a windows insider since vista getting all the early builds.

i always center my icons using the links button in the left, it looks clean, especially with translucent taskbar. and another benefit of it is that i am dutch and the word "links" means "left side" in dutch so i always know which side is the left

I checked my CPU for compatibility and was told that it doesn't meet the requirements. I found out it was coming out soon and looked more into it. All I had to do was enable fttpm in the BIOS and my CPU meets the requirements. Cant wait to check it out.
