Here in Brazil they didn't even tried. One brand at a time bought some chinese phones and sold rebranded here, but it was crap and expensive and no one bought. If the country has no know-how / business culture / money to invest in such business, it has no chance.

TL:DW - different brands can target different market segments and consumers without confusing brand identity. It's not unique to the smartphone industry, its very common. A popular example would be VW that owns Porsche, Audi, SEAT etc. Porsche - luxury sports. Audi - saloon/sedan mid luxury. SEAT - semis/lorries. It's to avoid confusion

Nope, car brands don't make new brands, they only buy competetors. And you don't need more brands one good brand is enough. If there is a VW and a Skoda and both are exactly the same, I would always pick the VW. I am actually very confused right now what smartphone I buy next bc I don't know any of the affordable brands and so I don't know who to trust.

Realme is Oppo's answer to Redmi, in which it almost destroyed the Redmi series(I said almost because Realme 2 is the worst sequel to any phone ever), so, the company has to answer again, which is POCO, the direct equivalent of Oppo. And also, Poco literally copied what OnePlus' main factor, being available in almost every country. This makes Xiaomi's Mi series unrecognized, with it being only available at selected countries. If POCO will be available at the US, then OnePlus have finally a direct competition.

So, where does VIVO fit into this?
@FlameRat_YehLon
@FlameRat_YehLon 5 років тому
First there was a company called Bubugao, who mainly does educational devices, then the CEO of Bubugao decided to make phones under its brand, and then when smart phones is a thing they make a new brand called VIVO, and then maybe they want to make a brand that sounds younger and thus there's OPPO. And now they also release new phones under the original Bubugao brand as well, which is of course called "educational cellphone".

Vivo and Oppo are basically two brands of the same company in some ways. Your analysis is just MIND BLOWING. I think no one I repeat no one in the entire UKposts platform has ever seen the mobile phone market in this perspective. What Charlles Pereira Costa said the exactly the reason a company needs more than one brand. He probably had a bad experience with one car and now will never ever buy the brand again. That happens a lot with brands that tries to reach two different customers segment: cheap one and quality aware one. And the cheap one, sometimes can change to quality one, if he/she has real bad experience with a product. But the brand is burned. And lets face it: you can't provide very good quality with low price. The cheap customers are ok with more or less experience and those will never be converted to quality one in the same brand, because he will hate the brand, and pay more to move to another brand. That is 101 marketing strategy.

@_yuri
@_yuri 5 років тому
that makes no sense. samsung too makes more from their display and memory business not to mention their shipbuilding and defence indistries and whay not. what he meant was huawei makes profits from phone. where as xiaomi wants to get people into the xiaomi ecosystem they are biggest iot company and they won't sell much so they get people by making the products accessible to everyone. they are like muji or uniqlo in that aspect.
@vladdx
@vladdx 5 років тому
pink Fungi And he didn't mention Samsung because he apparently doesn't consider it a competitor to Pocophone unlike Huawei/Honor. Also Samsung's shipbuilding business and everything outside electronics are separate businesses on their own which are owned by different people, while Huawei's networking is a division part of the same company.
@FernandoAES
@FernandoAES 5 років тому
The point is that Huawei has no/few means of earning profits AFTER the sale, while Xiomi has an entire business model just for that. Meaning that Huawei has to profit from the hardware sale, or make no profit at all. Sure they have other business, even more important ones, but if they were to sell phone at cost, it would just be as good as stopping selling phones altogether.
@vladdx
@vladdx 5 років тому
Fernando Álvares Similarly to Xiaomi, Huawei also makes money after sale with smartwatches, laptops and VR headsets which sell more due to brand recognition gained from phones. Anyways who cares where the money come from, the idea is, Huawei could easily match any price of Xiaomi and put them out of business if they want to by simply having more money reserves. The reason Huawei is not doing that right now is the fact that they are still growing strong in Europe and has much higher brand recognition than Xiaomi just like Samsung.

You want to know why I love Xiaomi phone? They're both consumer as well as enthusiast phone. This is also one of the reason why it's very successful in India. Normal consumer buy for the price and enthusiasts buy it because they know community support will be good.

Nah man! The only reason Xiaomi is in hype here in India cus India is a price conscious market. Consumers will only be loyal to those companies which will provide bang for the buck.

André No Last Name I don't say MIUI is enthusiasts ROM, the phone itself is. Bootloader unlocking is easy and Kernel source is always released in a few days/months after their devices are released. These 2 are the most important things for enthusiasts phone.

One plus has to choose now. Either be a brand that offers more performance per dollar and compete with pocophone and make less profit, Or they can be a brand which is an exceptionally well-built flagship phone, compete with s9 and iphone x's and hope that people don't go towards xiomi.

Love your in depth perspective into subjects. Someone needs to have a perpetually updating diagram of the arms of all these brands. When you get to 3 brands things start to get confusing for me (or I could just be tired) I've never been keen on buying a phone from a Chinese brand though as my line of work has security concerns. They banned Xiaomi and Huawei phones so I would assume the same goes for Oppo, etc.

Honor sucks. The storage used is emmc in most cases, basically an SD card. No matter if it's a kirin 970 or what, with that slow storage even 6gb of ram won't help you. Xiaomi and other brands might use snapdragon 660 but the storage is fast at least. If you like EMUI, just get a p10 or p20
