Why This Le Mans Hypercar Works With NO REAR WING

So Le Mans has always produced some incredible cars, and the new Hypercar class is no exception. But look at this Toyota, this Glickenhaus, this Alpine and then this.
Notice the odd one out? This Peugeot 9X8 has no rear wing.
It’s been decades since we’ve seen a top-flight Le Mans car without a huge rear wing - they’re essential in producing downforce and keeping the car on the road.
But somehow, Peugeot have made this car in a way that actually benefits from not having a rear wing - let’s dive into it.

The new LMH series is designed to produce closer racing and a grid of radically different cars, with huge freedom given to the designers.
For the previous LMP1 class, things worked a bit like in Formula 1. The FIA gave the designers a set of tight, geometrical restrictions on the bodywork of the cars, and the designers have to fit the bodywork within those restrictions.
This prevents the teams creating ridiculous downforce or taking things a bit too far.
However, this gave us a grid of similar-looking cars with big differences in performance, depending on which designers made best use of the regulations. The LMH class turns this on its head.

My concern with depending on underfloor downforce, is what happens when the car bottoms out or there's some piece of debris on the track that upsets that under-floor airflow. Does the vehicle suddenly lose much if not most of its downforce and then lose cornering ability for instance. A car that bottoms out could simply go straight instead of making the turn. Obviously the engineers and aerodynamicists that build these cars are geniuses, but that is my concern. Apologies for any grammar or spelling errors I'm using voice recognition.

As I understand it, Toyota forced the ACO to water down their original LMH plans on the basis that they were the only manufacturer commited to the programme at that stage and had a lot of leverage. I think it was a big reason why Aston Martin backed out (maybe Toyota wanting hybrids and AM not?). My biggest gripe with LMH is that they haven't banned the fins which are basically big advertising boards and have blighted the look of all LMP cars for the last decade. As a result the Toyota Hypercar looks barely distinguishable from the LMP. We already know they don't work as a safety device (Duval, Davidson crashes). If Peugeot keep their promise of no rear wing (and no fin) they will have my full support.

I think F1 are more vulnerable since you can see clearly how far the floor extends from the bodywork. Plus, since it's an open-wheeler championship, it's easy to have a wheel coming close and damaging it. Here, it's going to be bodywork against bodywork, and it's not a flat floor, it's Venturi tunnels. So I'm expecting less fragility, even though it could still be damaged from under

It's about time the race controllers encouraged inovation rather than stifled it!
@ASJC27
@ASJC27 2 роки тому
Innovation? How so? These rules are the most stifling in terms of aerodynamics that I remember seeing. They prescribe how much downforce you're allowed to make, how much drag at minimum you're allowed to make, and the maximum aerodynamic efficiency you're allowed to achieve. This means a short development to achieve the maximum allowed by regulations with no further development allowed. Peugeot didn't come up with some great package. They just realized that the limits are so ridiculously low that they don't even need a wing to hit them, and can therefore make a car that looks different. Kyle Engineers made a video about this with a good technical analysis. I recommend watching it. An engine equivalent to this ruleset would be having engine regulations that allow you to have any engine type and size you want, as long as you have no more than 300 hp. Then you don't need a 6 liter turbo V12 if you're just going to strangle it down to 300hp. You can just have a 3 cylinder.

@@ASJC27 Formulas are designed to produce close racing and reduce expenditure to encourage competitors to join as you well know. It is an effort to encourage innovation without expenditure, unfortunately this will amount to little more than a gimmick!
@ASJC27
@ASJC27 2 роки тому
@Eddie Hitler Not true. With normal rules cars are always evolving. Take a look at F1 was example - if there are no major rule changes, every year cars are faster than they were the previous season, and a high midfield car is likely to be faster than the championship winning car of the previous year. That's development progress, and whoever makes the best rate of development will have a better car than his rivals. With the rules discussed here, having an aerodynamic advantage over another car is outlawed - they are all speced to have exactly the same downforce, drag and efficiency, with zero development. Sure cars will look different - because the limits are so low that you can hit them with many different designs, even ones that don't have a wing (hint hint), but they are all mandated to have identical aerodynamic performance. They will all have exactly the same downforce and exactly the same drag as each other, because that's what the regulations stipulate. That's an aerodynamic spec series, with no aero development.
@oldtimegames96
@oldtimegames96 2 роки тому
@@ASJC27 ok, let's get this out here. You say that if the rules remain the same, then over time midfielder cars will be faster than previous championship winning cars.That may be true, but will it help the team? If the team does not win, all that development is for nothing, as previous championship winners are already ahead in such a system. This also makes sure that a driver's full potential cannot be truly identified, as a really good driver might be stuck in a back marker, as a rookie. Even if he drives the car to absolute limit, it would be hard for such a driver to even come to top teams. The regulations here are just defining how much drag and downforce a car can produce. This makes sure that a new or a low budget team can get similar performance numbers as compared to big budget teams. This also levels the playing field for drivers, as most cars have similar aerodynamic characteristic, and thus will help us to see who is a better driver. I agree to your point of it being an aero spec series, but even totally free innovation will kill a sport where technical development is as important as the drivers. Just see the case of F1. There are these big budget teams like Mercs, Ferrari, Renault, Red Bull who can under current regulations spend money like water just to get even the tiniest advantages, and on the other hand, we have Williams racing, who are barely struggling to just stay in the sport. See the case of Russel. Good driver (open to argument), but when did he had the best chances of winning a race? With Mercs, not Williams.

What I wonder about is that similar to the new F1 regulations being about allowing closer following for other cars, does this open up the 9X8 to being more closely followed than other cars on the grid and therefore opening it up to more overtaking opportunities. I'm no aerodynamicist so it's possible this also works in reverse where the 9X8 is also less effected by dirty air and therefore able to follow cars throwing out dirty air more closely but that's what I wonder about.

My main concern is that all projects in the past that explored the concept of low rear wing or no rear wing at all (Lotus 80, Arrows A3, Lotus 86 and 88 and Ligier JS19) and relied on huge venturis underneath the car failed by the porpoising effect.

Im saying that this is unsportsmanlike conduct, but you would want to use over body aero due to the fact it disrupts the airflow so the trailing car doesn't have enough downforce to keep up in the corners, so the straight is the only place the trailing car can make a overtake successfully.
@Timberwolf69

We'll see if it works, though. The problem with F1 is they want to reduce costs, so if you allow such freedoms, and no way to radically change cars during the season or even for several seasons, there is a big risk someone will find something and will dominate. It already happens with the current rules.
@sammywright9965
@sammywright9965 2 роки тому
@@aesma2522 yeah I fully understand what you're saying. However, not all innovation even costs that much. Sometimes it's a simple light bulb moment and we think "such a simple solution". Smaller fuel tanks to reduce weight for example (I know refuelling is banned in f1 but at the time it was an innovation that cost relatively little). I also have another rule that might be quite controversial. But if a team does find something that helps them get ahead then I think the onus should be on f1 to find this advantage. Once found I don't think it should be banned. I think the intellectual property should be shared among the other teams to see if they can either copy or come up with their own solution. This doesn't reduce manufacturing costs but it does potentially reduce R&D costs. The possible drawback is a lot of "samey" cars as they all share information but their will be still be differences as they look for the advantage. Also, it still won't be a spec series so there is still freedom
