40kwh Tekna here. Amazing solid reliable car. Ok it doesn't have CCS but as a 2nd car doing my 50 mile daily commute and running the kids around here there and everywhere it's perfect. It is supposed to be a 2nd car to my other half's diesel SUV but it turns out my LEAF does 18k miles a year and the SUV is now lucky to do 4k miles a year.

I’ve had a 40kwh Tekna for the past 2 years and as an everyday car it’s absolutely amazing . Air con, hot seats front and rear , heated steering wheel .adaptive cruise, lane keep , cross traffic alert , blind spot warning , 360 camera , full leather interior . Plenty off room inside and big boot . What more do you want for £10k ?

There is loads of Chademo around still, you're good for 3-5 years I reckon. Leaf Mark 2 (especially in Tekna) is a LOT of car for the money. 40Kwh will be 140-160 miles real-world, which matches published figures quite well. Space is good, drives well (smooth/quiet), loads of safety tech, 5 star NCAP (unlike 0 star Zoe). Lots of low-mileage ones around from car supermarkets. We got ours from Cinch, who are brilliant. Serious value at around £13k imo. Styling is subjective naturally, but in the flesh it's actually pretty alright. Go for the 69 plate (2020) onwards to get the upgraded entertainbment system - pre 2020 models had a much smaller screen.

Thanks for the review. Yes, the prices have cooled off a bit over the last 9 to 12 months. I bought a used 2019 LEAF SL PLUS (62kWh battery) last spring for $27,000 USD here in the states. It was offered by a Nissan dealership 5 hours away as a certified used car. The price might sounds worse than it was because it is a loaded SL with most available options including leather and had been garage kept for it's 3 1/2 years in New York City and only had 6,998 miles on it. The first year and a half it was in dealer showrooms during the height of the Covid pandemic and the next two leased by a local resident that had a garage. The shipping protective film is still on the alloy wheels complete with the "Peel here" labels still in place. I bought this before I knew about the CCS / Tesla being the primary fast chargers found and being installed here in the states but not sure that would have changed my decision. That is because I bought the LEAF to replace a Nissan Vera hatchback I had been using exclusively as my run around town car for 9 years and the Leaf still fits that criteria perfectly since I charge at home anyway. However, now that I have it and I do enjoy driving it on longer trips too I do look forward to the CCS to CHAdeMO adapters becoming more available and hopefully more reasonably priced. That should reduce the range anxiety I have experience a few times on longer trips due to CHAdeMO unavailability.

I haven't had a look at the prices for Leaf 40/62kwh for some time, as I've been thinking about getting a cheap leaf (24kwh) but these prices are very good! A private sale would get me nervous though, I always think you'll get some reassurance with a dealer warranty. The price for the £12k 62kwh (I think about 58kwh usable) in the video looks interesting, although there is a Kona available at the moment for £2k more with a genuine 64kwh battery, CCS 70kw charging and no rapid gate!

I've just brought a used 62KWH leaf (an upgrade from our original 24KWH UK built leaf) as the price different from a 40KWH car was minimal for the extra range/functionality (for our use case). While the leafs generally get looked down on (as a sub optimal car) as there are so many great cars from other manufactures available on the used marked (especially the Ioniqs) we really love it and its evolution from the original car (and full feature set) made it a no brainer for us. Yes CCS and faster charging would always be nice, but the chademo socket allows us to take part in Indra's V2H trial - and having the car power the house (which isn't yet available from any CCS car) was a massive positive for the leaf.

The Chademo would put me off, had a Tekna back in 2014, cracking car, lousy range so the 62Kwh battery would be for me and it would have to be a Tekna to get all the toys as I would be thinking of its future resale value and in a few years time 500 mile ranges will be the expected norm so something that could do around 200 miles would still sell. Loved our Tekna though but charging away from home was a nightmare back in the day although there were plenty of free DC chargers about and little in the way of queue’s. Once went from Halifax to Dover and return using ecotricity , no issues at all and all for free !

Couple of corrections. You can get a gen2 leaf with light interior, it was an option to purchase but they’re V rare. The parking brake on gen2 leaf (late 2013 >) is a foot brake to action not a hand brake. The 24kWh pack will degrade less than a 30 kWh pack so worth considering over a 30kWh.

The thing with Chademo is that it supports V2G/H from day 1. I’m waiting for Indra V2H to be installed, allowing me to tap into the ~17 kWh usable capacity on my 2014 Leaf. If V2H works well, we’ll upgrade to a 40 kWh. I would be specifically looking for a Chademo car (a Leaf). No CCS car currently support V2G/H. As you said, Leaf is gateway into EV for many. The 62 is much better, there's 3 battery 'modules ' as opposed to 2 in the 40. This is what allows it to charge sightly faster and also manage temperature better from both charging and motorway driving. Hence battery degradation is slower than earlier models, it's excessive heat that punishes batteries like the LEAFs which don't have active thermal management.

I agree with you that the Koreans are way ahead of the game. Like the Ioniq 5 equipped with the 800 V battery system. I visited the dealer to check one out. The sad thing is that the Koreans EV like Hyundai or Kia are so nice but also very expensive. Unlike the old days when you have to choose between a Camry or a Sonata, you are tempted to get a Hyundai because it is significantly cheaper. The Ioniq 5, if you want it loaded with the 360 camera which comes with some sort of autonomous driving or lane keep assist, would cost you quite a few bucks. For the Ioniq 5, you need to get the limited version (Highest trim). The AWD version is easily 60k. The KIA is a litte better when you get the AWD GT Line for about 58K instead of the highest GT model that goes for about 62K...................No thanks!

Shell were one of the organisations who lobbied the UK Government to bring *forward* the ban on the sale of new ICE cars and vans to 2030, from 2035...The National Grid were another. Not sure about the horse thing Michael. Keeping horses these days costs a packet...👀👀 Plus I'm a tad averse to shovelling sh*t........

Keith, which electric car did you own which you regretted buying? My Kia eNiro costs me £6 to £7 per week to charge up at home on my Octopus off-peak EV tariff (which recently reduced in price from 10p per kwh to 7.5p per kwh). That does me around 240 miles per charge. Haven't you heard of off-peak tariffs? Oh, and servicing's cheaper too Keith. I paid £68 for my last service. Repairs? I haven't had any carried out, apart from a faulty seatbelt warning light. My EV is 3 years old, and still has 4 years of it's 7 year warranty to run..... Lots less to go wrong with an EV Keith. A typical EV has around 30 moving parts. Your car has around 2000 moving parts to wear out, need replacing regularly or break.... And Keith, you *have* to drive to a petrol station to refuel. I do it at home on my drive while I sleep, for a 7th of the cost of using petrol. I haven't set foot on a petrol station forecourt in 3 years, and I've saved around £6k over no longer buying petrol during that time.... But hey, if you're good with ICE, then crack on mate...... Oh, I forgot to mention the free charging at my local Sainsburys. I have used it a couple of times, but in all honesty I'm ok with paying running costs of 2p per mile.......

Is the lack of liquid cooling anything to worry about?

Certainly seems to hasten degradation and causes issues with journeys that involve multiple rapid charges in one go (“rapidgate” on the 40kWh car). Not sure it’s a reason to avoid one completely though.

The battery will lose capacity quicker. A Japanese YTer has a 2018 40kWh Leaf with almost 190k miles on the clock. The battery still has a capacity of 29kWh. The net capacity when new was 38kWh. Not too shabby.
