Hey Luke, thanks for doing a review on this tent!! I actually purchased this model 2 years ago, and I've found much of the same issues you pointed out. The air flow is atrocious. I do find it a little small to be honest, but I'm a bigger guy--couple extra pounds, but in general, broad shouldered and bulky bastard. Regardless, for the price, the weight, and easy of set-up, it's a great deal. It's a bit warm in the summer but completely manageable. It excels in the spring and fall. I took it camping (I live in Central Ontario, Canada) mid December and fully survived the night. While it was ok for that one night, it did accumulate a LOT of moisture during the night. The air flow was not adequate enough to draw the warm away from the inside and let my sleeping bag battle the chill. My bag was wet, my face was wet, and the interior of the tent was wet. Also, my -9C bag did not fair well in -12C (it's actually only supposed be comfortable in around -2C). All in all, a great tent if you use it appropriately. Do not test it out on a multi-day winter trip. One night is fine as you'll be hiking out in the morning. Anything longer and you should upgrade to a 4-season, or just tarp it if you have the bag for it.

I've had on of these tents for several years and, for the money, it's probably one of the best one-person tents I've ever had. It's my go-to backpacking tent. And as to it being wether proof...I spent a night in this tent in the Uwharrie National Forest as the leading edge of hurricane Matthew was passing into North Carolina. Two other guys with me got soaked, but I was high and dry. We ended up bugging out around 4 p.m. just for safety, but the only time I got wet was when we broke camp. LOVE this tent and would recommend it highly!

I've owned the Lynx 1 a couple of years now and have spent many nights in it. I would doubt that you would find a better tent for the money. It comes seam sealed, is very well made and the tent poles are extremely sturdy. The zippers are high quality. It sets up so easy to. The weight is not bad for the price. If it weighed a pound less, it would be the perfect tent. It's also made in America.

I've had have the 2 person version for almost 2 years. For the price, performance and features it was an easy choice. Taken it out for a few nights fall-early spring, I have issues with heat so I tend to do summer trips with environmental controls, and have noted similar issue with air flow. I do bring extra lines, and replaced the "stock" stakes immediately, don't remember where I got the other stakes, or why I didn't like the ones that came with the tent. Oh ... forgot to mention, for those that live in California this tent carries a prop 65 warning so don't eat or try to smoke it.

I had a Lynx 4 and ventilation was superb due to the 2 doors and enormous amount of mesh. The ventilation problems you have are just what happens when a tent is downsized too much. If you’d had the Lynx 2 you would have had the cross ventilation from 2 doors, and could have left the bottom foot of each vestibule unzipped. ALPS really makes great gear at a great price, it’s heavier than the much more expensive stuff but for shorter hikes it’s fine. I still have a Jagged Peak 2 tent that’s a real tank. It’s a 3+ season tent like you mention, all the mesh has zip-up solid panels so you can almost completely close the tent up. The only places that don’t seal up are the tops of the head & foot end windows. I wouldn’t hesitate to use this tent below the treeline in northwest Maine mountain winters, if I was carrying it in my Jeep or in a sled. It’s heavier than I want to carry on my back, especially since I have a Marmot Hammer 2P that weighs half as much.

One of my favorite tents. For these reasons: 1. Very light weight even with ground sheet. 2. SUPER easy setup. Just 2 poles crossed and boom done (basically) 3. Dimensions are great. I'm 5'10 and have enough space at my feet to put some gear down there and it's tall enough to sit up and still have space above my head. 4. Fly is great and makes a decent vestibule space for your bag. 5. High walls are a plus imo. No worrying about getting wet and drafting isn't bad at all. 6. Bag is oversized. I fit my ground sheet and a LED light as well and don't have to roll it up very tight for everything to fit. Plus it has cinch straps to snug it up and make it smaller. 7. The price is excellent. Around $70 on Amazon (when I bought it). Can't really beat the value.

I have this tent, and I've put easily 50 nights of use in it. The rain fly did rip on me in a very harsh wind, but that was after 30+ uses. I've used it in the New Mexico summer, and the heat issue was pretty easily resolved by rolling back the rain fly and letting it vent out of the top. In rain, it's been water proof, it's held up under snow, and the tent body itself has taken a massive beating from the wind without bending or breaking. I just use a tarp as a rain fly now since I take one with me every time I go camping, and it's brilliant.

Hi Luke, I have/had over 30 tents in every shape, size, quality. From NF, Marmot, Moss, Eureka, ETC. to a Slumberjack bivy which I used on a rewalk of Colin Fletcher's 1000 mile summer. That was a 6 month lolligag from Mexico to Oregon through the east side of California and right through Death Valley so I do have a little experience when it comes to gear. I say all of that to say this.... I have always had very good CS with Alps. The only problem I did have that didn't work out the 1st time was with some poles I broke and went to replace. Some how we, Alps CS and I, got mixed up as to which one I needed, but after I contacted them to let them know they immediately sent out the correct one!!! I have not needed them or spoken with them since 2015 so hopefully they are still doing things well. They seem to ALWAYS do a darn good job... I have 3 different models from them and each one I like, though the Lynx is not one of them. I have also had great CS with the OLD Thermarest/Cascade Design gear and PUR filters, but again, haven't needed them either. (I guess I not buying any new gear lately, nor have I fully switched over to UL stuff.) As always... thank you for the honest reviews!!!

I have the 2 person version and have to agree it can get warm. During warm weather I take off the fly completely and sometimes I use a small battery powered tent fan. I have used mine in winter camp outs with good results. The tent has held up well and it is very good quality for the money. Great for solo outings. That's the summary of my experience with this ALPS tent series.

My daughter and son are both in scouts, this spring I bought them new packs, tents, bags, and pads to get them squared away. I bought them both these tents because they are fairly lightweight and sturdy, while being extremely easy to setup. Scout families get a discount through HikerDirect(alps gear) so I was able to pick them up for 65$ each. Its really hard to ignore the low price point when you need to gear up a whole family. My son and I spent the night in 25mph sustained with 40mph gusts and his tent handled it just fine. He is 9 and was able to set it up on his own, guy it out, and not rely on me, something that is huge at that age to build confidence.

I've had this tent for a couple years now and I like it a lot. What drew me to it was the price, the ability to sit up in it, the side entry and the vestibule. I agree that it isn't super breathable and it's not "ultralight " by any means, but it seems you have to spend 2x-3x the $$ to get that. I really feel that this was the best option for me for a budget solo tent. I would recommend it.

I have the ALPS Mountaineering Extreme 3 Outfitter, and I can safely say that while being made with a heavier material it isnt a hot house as the fly offers more ventilation opening should you choose to use them. I took it on a two month camping trip last year (July and August) from my home in PA to Mt Hood, Glacier NP, Teton NP, Yellowstone NP, Salt Lake region, Black Hills of Sd, and the Plains of SD. On the plains I ended up bunkering in the tent for two days due to a massive storm that just would not stop. It was a rock solid and dry tent. I'm looking forward to other adventures that I will have with it in the coming future.

There's something about the "looks" of this tent that attracted me to it. I own a Chinese knockoff called the Hewolf and I use it only if I go to an area where trees are scarce. I prefer hammock camping. The Hewolf has doors on both sides which is great for ventilation. For a Chinese knockoff it is a superb tent for the price point of about $90 or so a year ago on Amazon. Like you I have a high setting on my body furnace. You appeared to be over heating in the video so that alone may rule out my buying this tent. With so little ventilation my claustrophobia would rise to higher levels.

For me, my interest in Apls Mountaineering tents comes down to a combination of everything for a good price. Particularly that they have tents long enough for someone over 6' tall and still at a good price. They ARE super hot though which is why I picked up a lighter, smaller summer tent, but for fall and spring camping I simply don't have to worry about them.

I have five of their tents, I've used them in every season and I think my favorite one is the Taurus 2 for winter and the fahrenheit 2 for summer. I have pictures of about a half an inch of ice on the Taurus 2. If you ever have an issue they really do fix it quick. Thanks for all you do brother.

The tent is a tank!! It's indestructible!! For improved air, it would help if the tent were pitched sidelong to the wind and the far vestibule door guyed out so it traps the wind into the tent. Could also open the door if bugs are out of season.

My favorite "affordable and easy to set up" 1-person tents. I use it for motorcycle camping (and hiking) where quick setup/breakdown is essential and you never know what the weather will be. I've used mine regularly since 2016 without issue in storms, rains, cold, hot, winds, etc. I did buy the tent-specific ground tarp to make last and stay cleaner. Are there better 1-person tents... I'm sure, but for the $ and for the easy of setup of this freestanding tent (that you can easily pick up and move after setup with sleeping pad and bag inside) is great. I've used an Alps 2-person tent and it isn't nearly as good (wearing out quickly) as my 1-person Lynx.

There isn't one thing that made this tent catch my eye on Amazon, it was a bunch of little things; It's price, the size, the layout, features, etc, were what I was looking for. I definitely think that it's more of a 3+ season tent though like you said. I'd love to see tests in cold weather. The possible downsides you mentioned would likely become pluses. I am not even sure I'd use a tent in the summer TBH anyhow, I'd just do a tarp in most cases. Hell I did snow camping with just a tarp, but then again snow =/= rain.

My Dad has a Eureka TCOP (one man combat tent) and I have the older ICS2000 (one man improved combat shelter) and they all seem to have a similar tent body size. The TCOP rain fly and body seem to have the air flow issue figured out with the large mesh doors and fly that does not touch the ground. Those tents are not ultralight where I think yours may be. Thanks for the demonstration!

This looks like an almost exact copy of The North Face Stormbreak 1. I have one if them, but it has a guy line on the fly opposite the fly so you get a "little" more of a breeze through it.

You should make a review of the Robens Boulder 2 dome tent.

Out west I never had a problem with nighttime heat and it hardly ever rained so this tent at 3 pounds 8 ounces would be great. And a tremendous savings over popular light weight tents.

Bobby Harper, bingo! My trips to Idaho and Wyoming require a different tent than my Kentucky trips. That humidity is a killer.

@@lauraweiss7875Yep and in Louisiana it's best to put a plastic tarp over any tent when it rains.
