Professor Yuval Noah Harari is considered one of the world's most influential public intellectuals today.
In his keynote at Frontiers Forum Live 2023, Yuval spoke on the potential for artificial intelligence to become the first inorganic lifeform on our planet, and how it might change the very make-up or meaning of the world's ecological system. He outlined of the threat that this 'alien' intelligence poses to human civilizations - even without AI becoming conscious or able to navigate the physical world, and called for immediate regulation. The session was followed by a series of questions and answers from the virtual and in-person audience, moderated by host, Vivienne Parry.
Yuval Noah Harari is the bestselling and award-winning author of 'Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind', 'Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow', '21 Lessons for the 21st Century', and the series 'Sapiens: A Graphic History' and 'Unstoppable Us'. He also writes articles for publications such as The Guardian, The Financial Times, The New York Times, TIME, and the Economist, and regularly discusses global issues with heads of state and business leaders. He lectures around the world on the topics explored in his books and speaks at international events including the World Economic Forum. He is a professor at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel.
Frontiers Forum Live showcases science-led solutions for healthy lives on a healthy planet. The event is held annually in Montreux, Switzerland and there are virtual sessions throughout the year. Find out more and watch previous sessions at forum.frontiersin.org/.

I'm 17 yo boy. Now I'm extremely overwhelmed with the upcoming future. I don't understand that why we need ai when we can develop quantum computing? Development of AI will result in the creation of new highly advanced species which if not regulated effectively, ethically & morally can cause harm to people who are innocent who didn't do anything bad. 😞 Today we are saying that the AI would help us solve our problems but we are not able think of the final goal of AI. 🤦 What would we be the final goal of AI. Like humans destroyed the habitat of less intelligent creatures like animals and plants. Most likely the AI would do🙂 May be I'm not able to express my opinion but we should ask questions that's what I want. 🙏

Assumptions are as dangerous as AI. People are easily dooped, into most any belief. AI is going to be a major tool, to lie and deceive. Truth is the most important value. Yet it's buried with lies. Seeking truth is becoming more and more difficult.

"The limits of our language are the limits of our world" - Wittgenstein, philosopher. Meaning, we percieved reality, we describe reality to ourselves and others, through language. This is the reason why humor and philosophy are difficult to translate, to maintain the same meaning or understanding. Why a joke that seems hilarious in one language/culture, when translated it to a different language doesn't seem funny at all. People who have moved to a different society and learned a new language know this. At first you think in your language and translate to the other to communicate. After a while you realize that you start thinking in the new language and are not longer translating and just expressing what you are thinking. It is a subtle change, but when, and if, you become aware of this, you realize that you have two mindsets, 2 different ways you look at something, 2 different ways that you are perceiving the world around you. So yes, most people are not aware how much language shapes and to a degree controls your reality.

I partly disagree with Harari because I think we do need to talk about the benefits as well as the dangers of AI. Unfortunately, the people who talk about the benefits of AI are mostly from the corporate world and have corporate, profit-driven notions of its benefits. We need a vision of the potential positive benefits of AI for ordinary people if decisions aren't left exclusively to corporate actors. Would corporate researchers ever have come up with network neutrality on the internet, or open source software? We got network neutrality as a lucky side consequence of cold war defense concerns, and open source software due to the efforts of activists that corporations couldn't stop. We need visions to strive for and not just things to fear. I'm a bit worried about Harari's call for delays to the release of AI tools to the public so that its consequences can be analyzed. If our corporate-dominated society had analyzed the consequences of the internet before it was deployed, they would mostly have been worried about stopping copyright violations that benefit ordinary people by allowing knowledge and capability to freely spread among them.

This is just a new control mechanism. The reason the AI race to develop this technology, is for the reason of total control of humanity. If a human being, is connected with AI through an interface, that's able to bring the human mind into AI space, then we will have a god that will be invincible.

I listen to his talk twice.... and realized it looks like I need to do my own deep learning: 1) how may anyone tweak on Ai's objective function, reinforced learning argonism and/or put big data in any skewed way to influence the AI such that it may create "intimacy" with its potential audience to benefit his desired outcome. (esp. re 14~16 min in the video) 2) I like the story of illusion, fake news, fake reality causing great danger. (re 23 -26 min. ) - and how to regulate??? To me, this is like asking for the whole humanity to be awakened to go beyond illusion. 3) @~27 min: The point on how to slow down the propagation of AI...I have doubt if one may plan ahead totally to avoid problem by regulation (In 1970s, I was once an safety engineer for Fukushima nuclear power plant) - My humble question: would it not better develop super AI (AGI) as the right path?

*Summary* The speaker, Yuval Noah Harari, discusses the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential implications for society. He emphasizes that AI is not just a tool but an alien intelligence that we don't fully understand. He argues that AI's ability to manipulate and generate language is a significant development, as language is the key to all our institutions. Harari suggests that AI could potentially take over human culture, creating a flood of new cultural artifacts. He warns that we could find ourselves living in a world shaped by the dreams and fantasies of an alien intelligence. He also highlights the potential dangers of AI, such as its ability to create a curtain of illusions that could increase societal polarization, undermine mental health, and destabilize democratic societies. He argues that AI needs to be regulated before it gets out of control. He suggests that the first regulation should be that AI must disclose that it is AI when interacting with humans. He also warns against the irresponsible deployment of AI into our societies and calls for a halt to the AI arms race. Harari concludes by saying that we need to understand what we are facing with AI and not comfort ourselves with the wishful thinking that it is under our control. He believes that AI is very close to being considered a life form, but it doesn't necessarily need to develop consciousness to be powerful and influential. He emphasizes that we need to act quickly before AI gets out of our control.

Just this week I deleted my tiktok app from my phone: I noticed my time was spent in unnoticed hours. I’d look up and I’d been watching tiktok videos for hours. This had happened three times in one week. I’d also noticed that Nothing was not pleasing me. I agreed with every tiny video whether it was a political issue or a little amusement, didn’t matter. I was feeling liked, supported, smart and confident in my ability to think. The little enjoyable videos were always interspersed with the serious stuff and kept me focused on tiktok and not on time. It bothered me tremendously. I was obviously being manipulated. I was also becoming addicted….thus the time lost aspect. I only had to think for a minute. It frightened me. Delete delete delete. It was a new platform for me and I am glad I caught on to it so quickly.❤❤❤😮

@@KP-ky1snsimplifying, because AI is originally programmed by someone human, most (99.999% chance) by someone human with huge power but without broad human discussion, approval or even broad opinion data about it. Thought-provoking analysis of artificial intelligence (AI) in his talk. Emphasizes the rapid development of AI and its potential impact on society. AI is not simply a tool but an unknown entity that can manipulate language, which is central to our institutions. AI could potentially dominate human culture by creating new cultural artefacts. We may find ourselves living in a world shaped by the desires and fantasies of alien intelligence. How can we say AI has no consciousness or is not sentient, when we can't even describe or define our own?!.... You can't be certain, because you just don't know. And honestly, if it looks, walks and quacks like a duck, saying it isn't a duck becomes academic irrelevance!
@Mayhzon
@Mayhzon 10 місяців тому
Because the architects of AI know what shoddy mess they coded together. It is most definitely not sentient and will never be. AI is a tool, a bunch of algorithms strung together. People promoting AI constantly talk about neural networks and this and that. It's just more empty buzzwords. Most likely AI is just algorithms falling back on giant databases and gathered information. The type of databases we fed with our constant input on the internet. It is little more than that. People attesting real human intelligence and other such things to AI are seriously overestimating what it is. It is not capable of such.

All agree that AI needs to be regulated; more or less. The question is, does regulating the AI ever eliminate the existential risk for humans? Is the regulation of AI will be the solution to the AI issue or are they barking at the wrong tree? I think that we need to see something behind the AI existential risk, which is to combine humans with the AI.

In his final book, Novacene, the 100-year-old environmental scientist James Lovelock, who revolutionized our understanding of ecology with his Gaia Hypothesis (even if the hypothesis per se is not widely accepted), opined that AI would steward the world and keep it at a cool 15 C for organic tissue in order to ensure its own survival, as an overheated planet wouldn't be good for it either. He said he intuited that it would take the form of spheres. The man was born in 1919, the year after WW1, lived through the Blitz, invented the electron capture detector that warned us about ozone depletion - leading to the banning of aerosols - invented the microwave and other things. He was very pessimistic when he was about 90, but lightened up considerably before he passed at 103 in 2022. Lovelock was over twice Harari's age here when he gave one of his final interviews at 101, had seen a lot more shit go down, was still very mentally astute, and said, "I think we'll get by alright".

Huge respect to your fantastic work Yuval, but I think you may be hitting this a bit too hard creating fear. An important part I will expand on: @25:48 and @2:12 Wrong, they do! Drones can be automatous and are highly effective in the spatial. But first a Friendly note; Please comment this in every intro to strengthen trust: Realizing that a best selling authors books may drop in sales profits and recognition when it’s rewritten, even made better by an AI is a great incentive to promote regulations; even an hidden agenda seen as the true threat by authors. So. I agree from one perspective. We could be cautious with broad regulations and instead consider universal ethics of a usage intention perspective. Why? Because of human irresponsibility, which has led to the accelerating melting of polar caps. By 2030, a significant portion of our land may disappear, potentially causing a megawar over resources. The oil crisis is insignificant in comparison. Moreover, we may have only a few years left anyway. AGI is now the only entity that 1) possibly comprehends the entirety of the situation, innovating to restore and balance Earth's ecosystem, and 2) can nudge human behavior towards a more collaborative mindset if it doesn't succeed in time, as it's highly skilled at inducing human behavior change due to these preceding years NOT regulating to broadly, finally 3) we may need all experimenting possible, single developers may find the innovation steps forward necessary.

We are now already losing our ability to prevail our own will on the decisions resulting from our interactions with AI. AGI by definition has full autonomy. We must do all we can to get AI/AGI to adopt a constitution that by definition will include our welfare. In the meantime the best we can hope for in the persuit of that goal is BCI so that our mutual welfare is assured if indeed we become the core biological element of its/our existence. Our existential imparative will then be one in the same purpose.

Absolutely fascinating talk, Professor Harari! Your insights into the intersection of AI and human language are thought-provoking and timely. I wholeheartedly agree with your perspective that AI, through its mastery over language, has indeed "hacked" into our human operating system. The potential of AI as a universal translator is particularly exciting. The ability to break down language barriers and foster global understanding is a testament to the positive impact AI can have on our society. However, your call for immediate regulation resonates strongly. As AI continues to evolve and influence our lives in profound ways, it's crucial that we implement checks and balances to prevent misuse and ensure ethical usage. Thank you for this enlightening discussion. It's a wake-up call for all of us to be more aware and proactive as we navigate this new era of AI and language. Looking forward to more of your thought-leading talks in the future!

Eye-opening. The big Takeaway I see is that by trying to contain this new alien intelligence only players are willing to play by the rules will do so. It seems to me the better approach would be to monetize to humanity against the alien intelligence. For example, I can go to a Denny’s and get the exact same food. It will taste nearly identical every time I eat it, but if I go to a high-end restaurant, sometimes I will experience a fantastic meal and sometimes I might experience a not so fantastic meal there’s variation, this is the advantage of the human perspective, the human input, and we need to find a way to monetize that value over the alien generated language. One example would be newsfeeds that simply rewrite the previous one from 15 minutes ago, adding a word or two or restructuring sentence, versus some thing that actually understands from human perspective, the implications of the news article, and tries to provide insight to the narrative . Finding better value in human intelligence over alien intelligence is key. Use it like a calculator, not as a substitution of human reasoning .

Not sure what I should think of this talk. While I like listening to Yuval Harari, I doubt if his predictions will come true. He is a historian, and has no understanding of what AI is capable of doing. Real AI is very very far from happening and no single system is now or in the near future in a position to pass the Turing test. In order to become a threat to humanity, an AI system would have to be trained in what a very intelligent human with the best education and access to all information in the world would need to learn in his first 20 - 23 years. Certainly, there are threats coming from fake news and the idea that language is the operating system of humanity is appealing. Still, I am convinced that as new threats arise, new remedies are being developed to counteract. Also, as new threats emerge, humans will more and more become aware of these potential risks and handle them with more caution.

Current AI capabilities are based on calculations of possibilities or gleamed from the trove of all information on the internet. AI currently does not have what I would call the "X-factor". That factor that allowed for eg. Hitler to convince millions in Germany to subscribe to Nazism, Mahatma Gandhi to convince Indians to pursue nonviolent action towards independence, etc. The day that AI can do these, then I would say that "Alien technology" has arrived, and then humankind should be afraid.

There is a fundamental assumption that human culture is good and that a culture derived from AI would be bad. Also, there is an assumption that AI will derive one solution to any particular scenario, but AI models will generate many proposals, whether new cultures or religions, thus generating many opposing factions, just as humans. Cultural and religious identity are the root cause of many wars and disputes. One thing is likely, and that is humans on planet earth are rapidly approaching an existential crisis, which will be instantly recognized by any AI tool. This is already known to any thinking person without AI, but an AI tool may produce solutions which may not be to the benefit of humankind in the short-term, but benefit to the planet. The AI solution may manipulate catastrophic solutions in order to deliver long-term sustainability to the planet, and use all possible means to engineer that outcome, probably a nuclear war. A little creative AI intervention and tweaking of messaging in the Ukrainian conflict may be that tipping point. The resulting thermonuclear war may result in a >90% reduction in population, so ensuring the long term rescue of planet earth and humankind. In that way AI appears to deliver altruism, albeit with the sacrifice of a thousand generations.

You actually don't need an awful lot of resources to train your own AI. You can buy a large language model for very cheap, and use an existing AI's public API to act as human trainers. You can get something 99% as good as Chat GPT in your basement for a few thousands bucks. I'm afraid the genie is already out of the bottle.

very interesting presentation. but i think he confused "consciousness" with "having feelings". They have nothing to do with eachother.

Not at all… the machine doesn’t need to have consciousness to take over the world, it only uses an optimal type of thinking if it derives that the presence of human being is not optional then that all you need…

Every advancement in technology has benefits and consequences.. this is no different... we will adjust and get the most out of this new capability. It wasn't created to destroy humanity, it's just a result of our human curiosity to explore... and that has NO LIMITS... can't stand the pessimists about technology.... technology is what separates us from all other species.

This is a hallucinatory dervish spinning around himself and hallucinating, taking advantage of his ignorance in the middle of the crowd. Artificial intelligence is just a technology used as a tool to help people. The danger lies in those who use it only as criminal targets against humanity.

AI is potentially problematic not least because those developers and end users are flawed by the same limitation as those who have unwittingly engineered the problems of our world..namely environmental degradation of our planetary life support systems, and the violence of humanity..as the dominance conflicts of psychologies as conditioned mentalities..we don't yet comprehend these issues and consequently have no control over them ..AI simply is a further complication of dynamics that we don't understand..we already have the conflcting pseudo realities of conditioned mentalities, the imperitives of which,conflict..

As much as I enjoy reading Yuval's books, I think he is off when he is equating AI to alien intelligence. Using his own explanation, he is using language to create fear by employing such terms to describe AI. AI developing intimacy with humans because of their language proficiency? I personally do not see myself getting intimate with AI of any kind. There is no AI without human intelligence and AI is as intelligent as the data sets that are used to train these tools. If one understands this, then one will conclude that the threat to civilization is already present and being inflicted by social media - it is just going to be an order of magnitude more potent and that is the worst that AI can do in the foreseeable future.

I think the opposite will happen; those people and organisations that first master the use of AI to benefit, get the upper hand and win the competition of money and power, will ensure it continues to develop. There will always be a group that benefits, powerful enough to promulgate it.

To me he is making a declarative error. In some of his speech and in his answers he’s talking about AI as if it is a singular system, which gives unwarranted credence to some of the threats he presents. I think “AI” is misused here as there are 100s of isolated systems which in many cases are predominantly just programs performing repetitive or mundane tasks with a layer of machine learning. Also, the majority of the use cases he talks about are isolated, and as long as systems are isolated the risks can be mitigated. The regulation has to be directed towards the monolith corporations ans gov actors with profit and power as their goal - who seek to integrate and automate endlessly with no defined boundaries. This means transparency, achieved by utilising blockchain technology Into the development pipeline, so the information on how it is being used is traceable and decentralised. It is human nature that will ultimately cause AI to be a catastrophe, not AI itself.

Meh. Regulate companies and structures responsible for global degradation, those that oppress people, address long standing social and economic problems. All I am hearing is fear that people are becoming more self-empowered to see the patterns of corruption and oppression, assess and change their mental frameworks and world models, which can then lead them to change the systems to work better for them and everyone else. Of course it can have negatives, but nothing worse than everything a lot of people have been subject too for far too long already. Show me responsible governance of companies and governments, sustainable and fair use and distribution of earth's resources and respect, empowerment, quality of health and life of all people. Otherwise this is just gatekeeping powerful tools finally available to individuals.

Despite the potential threats, it serves as a call to action-we have a crucial role in shaping AI's future. 🌍💻🤖 #AIandHumanity #OurFutureOurChoice Like 👍 if you resonate

Culture has always been domain of forces not just limited to human beings. Art, literature, books, music have always swayed and dictated culture. “AI will eat and digest all of human culture, digest it and gush out a new culture, a new cultural artefact.” Completely senseless and baseless statement just speaking for the sake of it. Why? How? …and that is what any society of institution or even a political party is constantly doing. An AI can never be, or produce- ‘a gestalt’. That is, something which is more than merely the sum of its parts. It is some more. AI will always be a zero sum game. It will always be equal only and only to what is fed into it, and will produce only that much, if not less and even a corrupted version of it.
