A zero clearance insert for the miter saw is the most important upgrade you can make to your saw. Having a zero-clearance insert will allow you to cut wood and plywood on the miter saw without any tear out and ruining your work piece. So in this video I take you guys step by step on how to make a zero clearance insert for the miter saw so that you can get back to enjoying your woodworking.

I have been using my saw without a zero clearance insert plate for 10years. After watching this, it’s the first thing I am going to do before I start any new projects.

Best zci is from the company Colliflower. It has an aluminum plate with replaceable inserts when your slot eventually goes bad. No need to make a whole new plate. Just slide out the worn out insert and replace with the new on. It's awesome!

This came up in my feed and glad it did! I got right on it and made just one small modification - by placing a small washer between the tapped screw hole and the blank and pressing down hard you will get an impression on your blank and thus the exact location for the hole. Not only functional but beautiful as well!

It's on my shortlist now. Insert done on my table saw and love it. Need to do my Miter saw next. I liked that you use walnut, plan to do the same to - you know - Dress it up!!! Also, make a template....Smart tip!!

Saw your post on Instagram and was so waiting for a more detailed video so I could try this....going to make a couple (hopefully) this weekend...thx yet again for the great video! 🤩 Won't lie though....I really miss your "over the top personality" you had in your first videos ( you killed it in the tutu and bike and the (attempt to) slid down the hill w/o snow.....guess growing up happens to all of us ( eventually 😜 )....keep the great videos coming!

Love this reposted video better than the original one some loser stole from you. I dont have the tools or skills to make one for my miter saw, but I dont do the level of making you do. Would be nice to have cleaner cuts though. Too bad they dont come with the saw.

Putting masking tape on both parts and then putting the CA glue on the tape makes disassembly easier -- cheaper than double sided tape...

This is amazing! Definitely going to do this. Walnut is gorgeous but is there any performance benefit to using solid wood over ply for the insert or is it just an aesthetic choice?

You are using a sliding miter saw incorrectly and that is why you are getting tear out. If you make a score cut first and then extend the saw head out to full extension, lower the blade pushing it back making the cut you will find no tear out. Now if you have a chop saw you will need the zero clearance. The way the blade spins on a miter saw it essentially cuts from the bottom up unlike a table saw which cuts from the top down. If you don’t believe me try it without your insert see for yourself. But you have to cut it the way I described, also don’t force the saw through the wood. Let the saw do the work.
@billparrish4385
@billparrish4385 2 роки тому
I believe this is correct. The blade direction has each tooth going down on the side of the blade toward you, and therefore going up on the side away from you. So if you pull the saw all the way toward you first, then down, then push away from you, the teeth are cutting the wood from the bottom up -- so no tear out on the bottom of the wood, and all without an insert. How to avoid tear out on the top? As you say, make a scoring cut first. That way, once each tooth on the side of the blade away from you, while you're pushing the saw away from you, exits the top, it's coming out of the top in the bottom of your scoring kerf, and the wood on either side of that kerf is supporting it to prevent tear out. The only reason to have tear out on the bottom is if one chops from the top down, beginning furthest away from yourself, and then while all the way down, pulling toward yourself. That way has the downward teeth closest to you cutting first and down through the wood. There's literally no reason to cut that way unless you're trying to have tear out on the bottom. Pushing all the way down, then away from yourself would make tear out along the top, but the initial scoring cut prevents that. And since you can't make an initial scoring cut along the bottom, this is the proper direction to advance the blade through the wood.
