What should I do as a mid dev with three years of backend / integration experience in Ruby on Rails. I want to be able to find another job and hopefully in another language. I feel as though I’m hyper specialised in integrations.
@namanhkapur2 дні тому
three years is pretty good in this market, i’d just apply for general software engineering roles - they shouldn’t care about programming language

Ahh man I definitely sound like a hater from the comment I left. Wanted to clarify, my team was trying to find a principal engineer with a distributed system specialty and it was obvious that the engineers that we interviewed did not have it even if their resume stated otherwise.
@DK-ox7ze3 дні тому
The way you think resonates so much with my own thinking. I am a senior engineer but I completely agree with what you said. Nobody has it all figured out. The best engineers know that there's someone better than them at a particular task/tech. And it's that thought, coupled with curiosity, eagerness to learn, create impact, that keeps pushing them forward towards excellence.

"Senior Engineers" do not even make sense anymore in 90% of companies. What I learnt is that every company has their own version of what a "Senior" engineer is. You can be a senior in your own company but that can also mean jack shit in another company. Domain knowledge is so important that most devs will get promoted to Senior purely on having massive domain knowledge. Nowadays I just see it as a spectrum. Everyone is just a developer to me, and they all have different levels of experience. Working in a single company for 15 years with the title "Senior Engineer" means nothing to me anymore. You are just a developer with some experience and most likely tons of domain knowledge for that specific company.
@nunofigueira869122 години тому
15 years in the same IT company is alot... I hope this company has a lot of projects. 😂😂😂😂😂 If they don't have new product to challenges the people, this guy are working to keep the code legacy. Confort zone and you as a developer stop learning New things.

In my previous job, which was the first job I had in software engineering, where I started as a student and went on to full time, we had a relatively small application used locally by system administrators, and new versions would be released every few months. I felt super confident in all the parts of the system and everyone, especially my manager, always had 100% reliance on me delivering the features and fixes with the out most quality, and I received excellence awards and what not. Today I'm one year into my new job, where we have real time, SaaS, hundreds of millions of dollars on the stakes applications and it's soooooo complex. I'm one year into feeling the impostor syndrome every single day, and although my manager says she is very happy with my work, and I even got a raise, I feel like it's all a lie and seems like I'll never get to the point where I'm confident in at least some area of the systems. Now don't get me wrong, it's very exciting working in this scale and having the responsibility to make features at the best level so the system remains operational. I've been dreaming of moving to a different job just so I have the chance to fill good with myself again. I plan to stick to the current job for at least a few more months so it looks OK in the resume.

I would be careful denigrating senior engineers. Specialized fields (networking, control systems, graphics, machine learning…) rely on senior engineers as subject matter experts. Saying the people who built Starlink, built graphics engines, built web browsers are not ‘that good’ is disrespectful- you should aspire to have the same skill and ability as these folks if you are taking your engineering career seriously
@namanhkapur4 дні тому

I'm all over the place on this. I'm a lower-intermediate dev, and I feel like I generally know what I'm doing. By that, I mean I can stumble into something I don't know much about and figure it out. The seniors I work with, just from talking to them, still feel the same way, they're just faster at it since they're less likely to be starting from zero knowledge on any particular problem. So, from that point of view, I totally think I have what it takes to be a senior one day - experience and a continued willingness to just keep figuring stuff out. It's the interview process that fucks with me lol.
@namanhkapur4 дні тому
interviews are hard i feel you, but you can def be a senior dev, just need more time and experience

If I ever get 30 years of experience I've been working too long 😂 And "internal confidence" is more like "self-regard" that you maintain, while being able to take feedback. It's easier to take feedback with self-regard, because you know that needing feedback doesn't automatically make you a bad person.

"I don't know jack" is what I tell junior engineers I happen to work on projects with. I take them through my workflow on building stuff which involves a lot of research in documentations and stackoverflowing. I think that boosts their confidence. I have seen most of them build scary complex stuff without supervision after that.
