The guy who said like but not love is pretty accurate. There's always bs you have to deal with wherever you work. Hopefully overall the pros just outweigh the cons. And at the end of the day you're just doing it to earn a living and survive.

@German Scientist hey sir i am from indian and i am from Humanities background you can say social sciences and i want to switch it to tech by doing something called BCA in india as i dont have science in my senior secondary i am not eligible for many colleges but i dont want to study social sciences more now can you please guide me is there any change to get addmission in foreign is the stream really matters at the time of taking addmission and i am not that financially strong so please give a glimpse of cost of living it would be really helpful for me Thank you Himanshu this side..

I'm skeptical about their honesty. I think most of them are afraid that one of their colleagues or their boss will see the video, so it's better to say you like your job otherwise you risk running into troubles.

Is it really that impossible to enjoy your job? I don't think so - I work in video games, and there's plenty of natural enthusiasm from at least some people. Others are mostly neutral.

I currently work as a software engineer at a large bank (one of the big 4 banks). I f**king hate it so much. When I was in college, I was so excited to graduate and get a job. Now I realize what I really liked about coding was just building my own stuff.

Nothing is worth your health man. If they're overworking you, make a change so you can appreciate the smaller things. I know it's not always feasible but you need to be the one forcing yourself to make a change, or it will never happen.

I'm in early 30's because I keep bouncing around different things just quickly gaining proficiency and just starting in some career path, and then I get the passion destroyed in the job. At least when I had some programming classes they were the only time I actually read every last assigned reading and got fully immersed in coding morning to night with my free time. I worked IT for some years in a big company. I can either resume it or switch to programming. The way I am considering it is which one will keep me sharp on a skill I will actually utilize in life. And which one will be less on call.

@@AndrewPribadi Hey man, thanks. I'm currently working on computer graphics related side projects in my spare time. The dream was always to be a graphics programmer in the games industry, but it is very difficult to land a job there. I already know my salary working on games would likely be much lower than what I'm making now, but honestly, I don't care. I just want to enjoy the work I'm doing and be excited to do it.

@@noornasri5753 Hey, thanks for your comment. It's not that I'm overworked. I actually have a very flexible schedule and working from home makes it even better. It's the day-to-day work that I actually do and the corporate environment that I really dislike. Hate was probably too strong of a word for me to have used in my original post. I'm just naturally drawn to more creative kinds of work.

It's pretty telling how some people are answering this question as if they're being asked about it in a job interview, just pre-rehearsed answers like "flexibility in solving ambiguous problems" without being too direct. It's okay if you don't like your job, you don't have to convince yourself you like it, and you definitely don't have to convince others. You definitely don't have to convince yourself that your job at this major corporation is important/unique/affecting any actual change. It's a job, software engineers get paid relatively well compared to most other workers. Just collect the check, and focus on enjoying your life and helping people.

I didnt personally understand those responses the same way you did. Canned answers are a great way to not show up on a youtube video looking like a jackass saying there is something wrong with your company lmao. I understood flexibility to mean something like, hey I work from home and sometimes that means I work for 4 hours, then take a 3 hour lunch where I nap. Then log back on for a meeting before I play video games with my friends for a bit. Finish the day out with some emails and call it a day. Engineering isnt a 9-5 type job. I could take a 2 hour bike ride and be "working" by thinking about the problem as I stroll. Im not saying they definitely meant it my way, just thats how I interpreted it.

...or these people genuinely love that aspect about their jobs? I think this is in SF, and these people work at some of the biggest, most innovative tech companies in the world. Working for a company like FB or Google or Microsoft isn't like working at some no-name company. These people are very cognizant about what kind of company they want to work for. They don't just go to work to make money and then go home. To them it isn't just another "big corporation" job. If they don't feel intellectually and/or morally productive at the company, they wont work there. They actually care about the kind of work they do because they value their time, intellect, and effort. Which is why they answer that way.

LOL jokes. It’s very sad and says a lot about you for 2 reasons First, you’re very immature and have little life experience. Probably not very smart. That guy ENJOYs solving problems. You must not have any passions, and are projecting that’s to other people Second, your judgement based on your own ignorance breeds more ignorance, surprise! I loved this. Currently I’m at my first internship as a software engineer and I won’t lie, transitioning from college to real world application is rough af. You go from really only learning basics and theory and then you get thrown to the wolves where you have to learn a new code base and start really applying yourself and start learning by yourself in your free time. It’s hard work but so fulfilling and fun when it all works!

Software engineers are generally pretty smart people, this extends outside of tech. Many of my friends who are successful and have started their own companies are also very existential and balanced. Nothing is perfect all the time and the beauty of life is riding the waves. Compared to my non-tech friends, they do truly have more freedom in work, finances, and experiences.

Every job is like this. Some will love it and others are doing it just as work. It’s still a good path to take. Once you get the degree at least your doors are open for a whole lot of other jobs. You don’t have to remain a software engineer if it is truly making you miserable and it can.

@@emily_online you don't actually need a degree for anything, just meet someone in the field, learn and attack. edit: ok, not ANYTHING, you can't be neuro surgeon without a degree, but anything outside of a top lawyer or doctor and you're good.

There's an extrovert bias among the interviews but it's probably not a bad thing to showcase some of the more positive examples. The negative examples are plentiful in places like Blind and maybe reddit.

I am retired after working as software engineer for 47 years. I think it was the best career choice. You are a good fit for the job if you are a slightly compulsive puzzle-solver. Writing software will be a bit like playing a game of chess. It will feel like good brain-exercise, much like running for some people is a feel-good muscle exercise. You will develop personal software all the time for your own use, as much as on-the-job, and will do it as much for the fun of it as for the utility of your toys and tools.

You know that last guy that said “no”, I can relate with the most. I mean I’m too young for a job and stuff, but I agree when he said most of the things he does is just for survival, because sometimes I feel like that too, which is sad, but that’s the harsh reality of life sometimes. It’s not always fun and easy, there is challenges and problems to get past too.

Software engineer myself and I like what guy said about liking, but not loving his job. You are usually surrounded by pleasant comfortable environment, bonuses, paychecks, flexibility, etc. But to LOVE exactly your job and daily tasks, not surroundings, idk, man. For all super-positive answers, there should be next confirmation question: if you truly LOVE that, would you really do the same for free as your hobby?

As a software engineer, this seems pretty much it. Software engineering is a huge huge field, with lots of mobility and options. Its a career that is very "alive" at the moment, so there are a lot of opportunities to find something that you like in a place that you want to work in. Is this career something that people are passionate about? Yes and no, a lot of my peers picked this career because there was something they loved about it, but work in general sucks the joy out of everything. People certainly enjoy parts of their job, but most of them have other activities that make them happier, that's how it works in the industry. Plus, the pay is great, there is a certain freedom that you get that doesn't make you love the career, but makes you thankful to it. Doing something that you like to enjoy a livestyle that you love.

I work in tech, but I got into it after working shitty retail jobs for a decade. In comparison to retail, I really love my job lol. But working on a computer 40 hours a week, day in and day out is exhausting and bad for your eyes. I'd love to get to a place where I'm working 3 days a week in the future.

I don't think software engineers in general likes the job. What they usually like is what their job allows them to do. Some can do their job duties without being tied to one location, some have lexible schedules, some have great paycheck that lets them to spend time on their hobbies or just allows them to have certain luxuries etc. (Of course benefits highly depend on the company you work for, but I have only met 1 software engineer who actually is obsessively passionate about programming. So I assume it's safe to say that job itself isn't likeable).

I think he should have had the follow-up question of "What would make your job even better?" then I think we would get a glimpse into that pov

It would be interesting to see you come to Europe and ask this and see how answers vary. Perhaps it was my perception but it feels like for some of the ppl interviewed they have tied their personalities to their company and not career choice so they want to wow you with their company. Which bears the question, do you tell them what you do for a living? (Purely based on their responses I would assume they have no idea you also work in tech and youtube is a side hustle)

Their answers are the model replies you give at big firm interviews. I love the challenge and freedom to solve unspecified problems! It sounds like the very essence of corporate America. Having worked in a Fortune 100 and going through multiple rounds of interviews, I have given the same answers and you would not be wrong to expect very little people in the company are actually that excited about selling their soul to the job.

@@sunlightdavid Each time you hear someone say "i'd love a challenge on ..." remember that they have knowledge on this topic . each time you hear someone say "I'm an expert in ..." remember that they already work at least once on the tech. and bim bam boum , HR file decrypt. people in America just talk like their life are threatened by unemployment.(And maybe it is ?) When in doubt "fake it till you make it".

Developers make sure you go outside and get plenty of sun the high depression rates can be attributed the huge amount of hours spent in front of a screen. Vitamin D is important.

I also know a lot of software engineers and it's the opposite experience for me. Most people aren't sad or depressed. Sure, they might not necessarily *love* their job, but they are paid well to solve interesting problems. Most of them enjoy their work to some degree and definitely aren't sad or depressed.

Anyone with any job can be sad or depressed about it. Do you think its fun laying asphalt or being a plumber? Jobs suck, but at least in software, you get to sit down and build things without having to cater to people all day or whatever else people do.

I love being able to program for a living, but people that haven’t programmed probably don’t get the idea of how stressful it is to code. Especially trying to fix bugs from your programs when there is a deadline coming up soon. I love it but I can’t deny the level of stress that could potentially come

MS CS Georgia Tech. I am a professor at a community college. I love going to work, when I do. I teach 8 months out of the year and spend a month to two months in France every summer. My salary isn't as high, but I have more money than I need and full state-government-employee benefits. You couldn't pay me enough to work 50+ hours a week for 48+ weeks a year instead 30ish hours a week for 30 weeks a year.

I'm glad I switched from coding to teaching other people how to code. I have felt physical changes and have been able to come off two mental health medications I was on. Coding is awesome, I love it. But the deadlines, restrictions, working with an existing code base that I have to adapt to and learn... that stuff is not fun to me, and as an instructor all that part is gone. I instead get to do all the fun parts all the time

In my current position, I really try to talk with my colleagues a lot (I have 2 colleagues im on very friendly terms with), but it's honestly still a somewhat lonely job. I feel like I am very extroverted compared to everyone else there. It's my first job after uni. Atm. I don't really like my job.

Here’s a better question, would you be happier rich and not work or get paid and work for the well-paying job you “supposedly” love? Most people will choose the first option unless they do something like sports or travel or something that is actually enjoyable. If they love solving ambiguous problems would they still love their job if they were paid minimum wage? Salary will always be a factor behind any “love” for a job especially for tech. I think these people are answering based on a relative scale. Do you love your job (compared to all other possible jobs out there/previous ones you’ve had)? Seems to be implied.

These days, programming you can do from wherever you want. And however much that you want. If you can earn a thousand dollars a month remotely, you can be as free as you want. And that is a beauty of it.

I work with devs, surrounded by them. You can’t generalise and say devs do or don’t like what they do - it’s as personal to the person as the love for any job would be in any field. Great pay, working on cool things (where relevant) and with good people all help ofc though.

i have 7 years experience. the job, ehhh....not passionate. but my side projects I LOVE. mobile apps and game dev. my job teaches me new and interesting ways to spice up my code on my projects. my job is basically for income and living. i work so i can have fun. i DO NOT mix work and my passion. (full stack engineer)

self taught engineer here, I found it incredibly difficult working with college kids over self taught types, to a point I only work on solo projects at this point, I'd say I love doing it on my own time

I'll recommend you to start with youtube tutorials first. Identify if like frontend or backend more. You might want to start with frontend first so I'll recommend you a channel called "Traversy media". Go do hands on HTML in 1 hour and then continue with javascript & then css. And you will pick up from there

Shoutouts to the last one, the only person I can actually understand although I assume everyone else thought about the implications of their answer if their employer were to see it As a software engineer I haven't found a single company whose values/goals are aligned with mine in the slightest The work you want to do is either an exploitative mess full of terrible people (aka the vg industry) or just doesn't allow you to survive (aka actual useful social work that applies to anyone) Meanwhile, tons of giant companies employ half the world by subcontracting in the scamiest way possible to save money, and take decades to deliver the simplest change just to raise their profit margin by like 3% And then the only person who gets rewarded is the CEO Yeah, fuck that, I don't hate >my< job, I hate the concept of jobs and working in general, whenever u guys ready call me for revolution, I'll either be on the verge of scd or gone from the world lmao

I think the number of people in the tech industry that do not love their job is very small. Most of the time they don't like the projects they are working on or the tech. Many people complain they don't make this and that amount of money and I tell them to try to work as a bagger at Publix, Walmart maybe Home Depot! 🤣

Kind of a pointless video to make. Are you really expecting anyone being interviewed to be honest? What if people said they hated their job and their boss or someone at their company happened to watch this video? They'd get fired instantly. Most of the answers given for loving their job are just the most generic shit you'd hear in any interview: "I love being challenged..." "I love the people" lmao. If you want real answers just go on Blind and you'll find that those really don't match what is being said in this video.

Had 6 roommates and one bathroom for all of them, basically lived out of her car half the time given she spent so much time in the field. yeah it's expensive but people are also just greedy. understandable i suppose but somewhat revolting knowing how many have so little and are actually grateful for it.

Most of these people get jobs in the IT field because they know they are higher paying jobs than most. Doesn't matter if they don't have a passion or actually affinity with programming. Truth is, not everyone understands programming languages and how they work, beyond the bare minimum to survive in a job. I've seen countless of cases with employees that are still middle after 8-9 years, because they don't have the skills and problem solving thinking mentality. In every IT company you go it's the same, there is a small group of people who are actually great at programming and the rest are just meh....
