There is lots of drama about the minimum requirements that Microsoft has announced for Windows 11. If you have found that your PC can't run Windows 11 then there are some alternatives. Here is my list of the top 5 alternative to Windows 11.

The biggest advantage of Chrome OS is that you know outright that every single bit of data about you is being collected, so you don't have to feel confused about what data they have on you, you just know that it's everything.

@@SmilerOnlineMicrosoft's recent moves have triggered a lot of people. Privacy aside, I cant even listen to a local MP3 file I have. It opens in groove music and groove music shows an ad for spotify. Those ads make my blood boil each second I use stupid windows 10. The slow "Photos app" which literally takes 2 minutes to preview a jpeg. The constant push to use onedrive and edge eventhough onedrive is buggy af. Can't imagine how horrible 11 will be. 11 is more spyware and crap with a better looking shell IMO. And by the time windows 10 goes out of support in 2025, I assume linux gaming would be much better with better proton and wine supporting windows games and vulkan being state of the art API for native games with all features being supported in linux. Sorry for the long rant. Have a good day!

Although the “fragmentation” and “hostile environment” are very real in the Linux world, I want to assure anyone interested in Linux that they are much less severe now. So many distros give everyone the option to try and choose according to her/his needs. And if you dig around a bit, you will find forums that are much friendlier and decorous than those of Windows or Mac. Although the caveats of using Linux mentioned by Gary here are well-intentioned, he should’ve mentioned the caveats of Windows and Mac, too. Windows is notorious for its privacy violation and security issues, and Mac suffers from unnecessarily set price tags and unnecessarily closed computing environments.

@@1____-____1 Yeah - I wasn't very specific with my comment. I for one enjoy the fragmentation as I can pick the right distribution for the right use case or person if I help someone setup a system. I don't think I have been met with hostility in at least 4-6 years, so even though it can happen, it's just not typical anymore. At times with some arch users you can be unlucky, but most New users don't start with arch, so that's not a problem

Actually running Win11 will be a real alternative to Win11.. TPM-free Win11 sold in China will eventually find its way to torrent sites. I'd assume since there will be official TPM-free version, there will be fallback code for lack of security features in all versions of Win11 kernel.. Someone will just patch the installer, remove these requirements and they won't matter. You can still run the latest version of Win10 on socket 478 Pentium 4s (without NXbit support) by patching the installer.

I think Linux won't probably be 1st spot: Lack of programs, drivers, and games compatibility (95% people use Adobe, MS Office, Windows Games and they're used to use these programs, they don't use Open Source alternative like that and it'll feel uncomfortable for them). Most people don't even know how to use a computer other than opening MS Edge and Google Chrome so Linux will be nightmares for them. 95% of them learned to use Windows when they're young so they're used to use Windows, Linux will feel uncomfortable for them. Linux has too many distributions and it's not a single OS, regular people will be so confused even I was back then. Windows is Windows, MacOS is MacOS, ChromeOS is ChromeOS but Linux isn't. Even people with most technical at computer don't even know what Linux is. ChromeOS / Chromebooks now seems to be more dominating than Linux and MacOS due to how cheap and easy it is thanks to COVID-19 pandadamic, someday developers will port Windows programs to ChromeOS. I have a history of "slower" machines using Windows 10. One time I bought a $300 3in1 laptop/netbook and it was suffering hell under Windows 10. 32 GB disc space couldn't handle constant updates, browsing just 2 tabs put a strain on CPU, I dare you to open MS Word. So I obliterated Windows 10, installed Linux Mint... it's not that it now runs faster, it's basically a useful machine now. And it wasn't. And the best part: with scripts available online I managed to re-create the 3in1 functionality: disable keyboard and touchpad when the device is folded, rotate the screen 90 degrees, open on-screen keyboard - all this without any programming knowledge, just straight up copy+paste scripts.

This is highly unlikely. Linux’ market share hasn’t moved in 20 yrs. and there’s no foreseeable reason that it would. Desktop Linux lacks 4 important things: 1) Linux has NO LEADERSHIP. There’s no one at the helm of this ship. 2) there’s NO AUTHORITY in linux. There’s no one saying “YES” or “NO” to projects and the money needed to create them. 3) Linux ha NO MONEY!!! That speaks for itself. 4) For the past 25 yrs. Linux has never been able to attract the attention of commercial software vendors to the platform. But, why would they be attracted to it? If vendors write for Windows and MacOS, they’ve essentially covered 100% of all businesses, not to mention the home market. I.E., desktop linux becomes irrelevant.

But this leads to, any idea if Windows 11 can be installed as a dual boot; and if Windows 11 can be run as a guest OS in a VM?

@@GaryExplains Thanks for the reply. Sorry, my comment wasn't clear, I bought an x86 Macbook Pro in Feb, (and really happy with it), in one of those spend ages trying to decide which is the best option, and then realising the one you went with maybe wasn't the best, just after submitting the order. But I thought that the Arm version of Windows sucked. And the application I use isn't ported to Arm anyway. P.S. One of the first computers I used was a VAX 11/780 at the company my father worked for and I wanted to work for DEC. Never made it though, although in the 1990s I got to work using MicroVAXs, VAX Alphas and even DEC PCs

@AstroCat Hey that is true, it doesn't (and will not be) retired. I more mean that if I want to use Windows 11 I will have to retire it even though it is perfectly useful still. Before when Windows 10 was introduced that was the only way to get DX12 as Windows 7 didn't support it. But that was no problem as I could easily install Windows 10 without a hardware change. Now if I want to use Auto-HDR and DirectStorage I need to go over to Windows 11, but I can't bring my current, perfectly good hardware. So it feels like if I want these features then I am being forced into a hardware upgrade that I don't actually need for these features.

Windows 11 should use a DirectX HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) & HEL (hardware emulation layer) which could encapsulate ALL your multiple CPU cores (whether you have just 2 cores or as many as 64 cores) into a single "black box" interface, so when games make CPU calculation requests, it is instead passed to the CPU DirectX HAL/HEL black box, which breaks up the task and spreads it efficiently across ALL the cores and threads. This way, even though computer games programmers only currently optimise their games to make FULL use of 4 to 6 cores in most games, windows DirectX could act as an interim step which makes the game THINK you just have one AMAZINGLY fast CPU core, with windows 11 DirectX HAL/HEL creating that illusion. The net effect would be that ANY game doesn't need to be rewritten, it just pasts CPU calculation to this DirectX HAL/HEL black box interface, and then gets its answer back incredibly quickly from the other end of that same black box, without the game programmers needing to know how it did it. And this will FINALLY mean that PC owners get the FULL power of EVERY CPU core being used, with this DirectX HAL/HEL making it appear it is only dealing with an incredibly powerful single core, and removing complications like multithreading. My Masters degree was looking at DirectX (with HAL and HEL) and how it could be used in VR, so I KNOW this is possible, and it would make a HUGE improvement for gamers with CPUs that have lots of cores. :)

Gary, hello from another DECite. You probably know by now, but in-case you don't, it is possible to install Win 11 on any PC hardware that supports Win 10. There are videos on other platforms that show the only limitation and restriction occurs during the installation phase which can be bypassed allowing the installation to continue. This so called security requirement (TPM) can also be dis-proven on a fully supported Win 11 PC by checking the TMP status after install. TheTMP manager will indicate you have a TPM but will also indicate whether it is in use or not. In other words it is still a user decision to use TPM or not. So why enforce a requirement if it's use is optional?
