Hi Luke, Greetings from Mexico. I am backpacker and hiker too. Let me tell you what happened to me once. I was hiking in my favorite place, "El chico" National Park, Hidalgo State, Mexico. So, I was exploring in a place what I never was before. After walking a couple of hours through the forest I big rock blocked my way, It was no too much steepy and decided to climbing it. This rock had two steepy sides. I didn't know that a Lynx was climbing the same rock from the other side. Both of us reached the top of the rock at the same time, in the same place!. Our faces nearly crash into each other and we both stopped any move. We both was there, staring each other. None of us moves, only ours breathing noises. That was a very beautiful Lynx, big green eyes, big paws. After a few seconds, the Lynx just turned to his right side and started to walk slowly. I stayed there ,very still, until I lost sight of the lynx. That was a very exiting and odd encounter in the woods.

Yes! I had the same thought, too. If you want to make a few recordings to show things of interest, I think I would be cool with that. Luke, I think you have so much respect from your viewers they would feel like they would be intruding on an intimate trip between you and Susie, even if you did plan the trip to do an episode of TOGR.

Back in the early 90's we were at the Great Smoky Mountain Trail Ride with the Land Cruiser Club in Tellico Plains Tennessee. We were in a huge group camp, I and some friends were sharing a fire pit. We had our dogs or at least most of us. It was dark and this guy comes in late and pulls up next to us. He is at least 6'8" and he has a grey wolf with him. This was the biggest K9 I had ever seen. The dogs were trying to hide under our legs. They had this weird air about them, like a darkness. I don't know but he eventually left and we all let out a sigh of relief. Weirdest thing ever in the woods for me.

watching the video, first time commenting, love outdoor content. as an longtime outdoors guy, i can appreciate your storm experiences, but I have to say, your level of preparation, all the little gadgets, the little kits carefully organized, its not the reality I live in. My world is packing thursday night, doing last minute checks friday after work, and still finding out i have forgot something, i envy the organization, if you are a fulltime content creator and being this prepared is what you do for a living, hats off, enjoy it, but its not the reality I live in, i will always have to improvise for what I didnt bring, its just who I am Cheers

Another great adventure! Thank you for sharing! The only time I saw a lightning strike was years ago as I was coming out of my ground floor apartment, using the patio door, I took one step out, and the hair stood up on my arms and at the back of my neck and just as I was thinking, “ what the hell, I saw the strike on a sewer grate about 50 feet away! The sound was like a bomb going off and blue streaks ran across the road, I never moved backwards so fast in my life! Back in the patio door and slammed it shut! I will never forget that!

Hi Luke, I really am impressed with the way you “chop” wood for your fire..hands and feet are your tools. You really have such cool equipment, something differet every time..I just love the way you unpack little bags that that expand into a fully furnished camp. That sleeping bag outfit is the way to go. The light strip you hang up in your camps seem like magic, what an invention! i wish we had those when we were camping with our kids in the ‘70’s..Your description of the canine you saw and your intuitive caution and fear, fits descriptions of a huge gray wolf-creature that has no fear of humans and takes what it wants, like cattle and can not be injured or killed with bullets and scares the hell out of people at a place called Skinwalker Ranch. way out West somewhere. i am sorry you didn’t get enough snow this winter, i would have gladly sent you all of ours if i could. it lfeels like spring is here in NW WA, very early and very cold but the trees are awake.🌲🌲🌲🌲

I remember my dad was across the road at his brothers, it had been storming, lightening and rain. The electrical power kept going in and out. Well he got tired of waiting to come home and he needed to use the restroom, we all prefer our own, he got to the big metal gait, went through it just 2 blocks over lightening struck the ground, it left a burn mark on the pavement. Of course we were young and it scared us all, but not as much as my poor dad. I think he thought he was a dead man. I miss my dad, he died at 57 years old, 30 years ago. 😪😪😪

I spent most of my time as a kid in my tree house or in the woods on our 67 acre place in upstate NY, so I know where you're coming from. I used to love being outside during a thunderstorm, the more lightning, the better I liked it! Once my wife and I was coming back from Arkansas in the early morning hours. Somewhere between Decker and Vincennes on hwy 41, we saw a large canine. It's shoulders were at least the height of a regular sized sedan, was around 10 to 12 feet long. It ran across the road in front of us and down over an embankment and across a cornfield at a high rate of speed. It would be the size of what we would consider a dire wolf might have been, if they weren't extinct. We still are not sure what it actually might have been.

You just reminded me of an encounter that I had. It was around 6:45 am and I was walking to the bus top to catch the bus to my job. I was getting ready to cross the street when a pack of stray dogs crossed in front of me, there were at least 20 of them and the big dogs were in the front and the smaller ones trailing behind. I held my breath because I didn't want them to be alerted to my presence. They crossed the street into a woodsy area. I live in Indianapolis and I have never seen that before. Freaked me out somewhat.

Its 37 degrees in North Alabama and wet. Been burning lots of seasoned oak. Warm at home but had to go to the store, rainy and cold. The only plus was I have a raincoat thats terrific. I love cowboy camping too. My husband always wants a big blowup mattress. I tell him he would be warmer if he slept on ground. A tarp to put on ground and a really good sleeping bag.

A sheepskin, hide and wool, a real one, underneath you really, really keeps you warm.. An Elk hide, fur side out is the best blanket but rolling up in a buffalo hide fur side next to the body, is the ultimate sleeping bag, however buffalo hides are very $$, and are heavy to pack. Sheepskins are reasonable to buy at a leather store. and can be washed by hand and air-dried. and the fleece brushed up to keep it nice. Is cowboy camping anything like indian camping? Just kidding..my husband and I both have Native American heritage, and after we retired, we traveled to inter-tribal encampments, Pow Wow gatherings and Sundance. Part of the fun was learning and doing things in the old ways. Some folks had tipi lodges, most of us tent camped or had campers and RV’s, some hardy souls just set up a tarp, an slept on the ground. We had community out-door or longhouse kitchens, no electrcity or running water. we cooked on wood stoves or propane burners with the women cooking and everyone gathering for meals, and dancing and drumming and singing. The nights in spring-summer-fall were always cold and damp by morning, & we had many rainy encampments. I was never warm at night even with my husband in the bed, until i discovered sheepskins and was gifted an elk hide. Our friends who had their own tipi lodges were the most comfortable, IMO. They had a fire in the center and rugs and hides covering the “floor”. It was all totally the opposite of solo camping. We tented and van camped when our sons were little, but in our elder years we had a camper, and I loved my little play-house. I kept it all packed and stocked up so it was easier to get on the road and go. I no longer camp or travel since my husband passed away. And i just love luke’s channel for all the reasons eveyone here does. I miss the adventure, all of my old friends and , being out in the woods. But i live in the woods i have menfolk, my two bachelor sons who live with me.We have a wood stove in the kitchen for heat during power outages, and a fireplace in the front room, and they cut the wood and build the fire. We had a fire going tonight, too but we don’t have any of that dry oak, we have been burning wood that blew down in the big storm here in Nov. I see you are from North Alabama and are @ 37 degrees. I live in NW WA, it is 38 degrees and wet., the damp cold just gets into the bones. but the fire is so cozy. I have never been any farther East or South than Missouri., but my father’s great grndparents had a home and farm in Mississippi before the Civil War,they lost their home in the War.and went to Texas. I never thought of Alabama as having cold winters,o always thought of the deep south as having mild winters and hot summers. here in NW Wa we have always had rainy summers and rainy winters but it has changed, to very hot summers and very cold and stormy winters with lots of snow. Ihear that there is a terrilble winter storm with temps down to 60 below zero going on now in the south and especially Texas. I hope it will not get into your area , at least you have a good supply of wood on hand. Stay safe and warm and Happy Trails camping. 🌲🌲🌲🌲😎

Hi Luke Great video ( as usual) looks like a wonderful Tarp and what an awesome location.. I have had some stretching in tarps before and i think you touched upon this. The larger the tarp the greater the chance for strectching ! Anyways, i have been thinking and i have just created some stretch cord ( bungee cord 3/16" - cut into 32 " length - unstrectched) then tied the 2 ends together to form a loop, this gives a double cord approx 12" - 14" long as you will lose 6-8 inches for the knots and protruding ends. I plan to attach these to the tarp and then leave them in place, then i can just clip my lines straight to them, and as and when the tarp stretches, the bungee cord will keep a constant tension and take up any slack. Finally as a bonus, if winds become strong they will also give a little and go right back once the gust (gusts) have past. Just a thought from me , it is what i'm right now putting together 4 of these for the main tie off points. Wonderful adventure - as always looking forward to the next!

listening to your lightning stories reminded me of the two times I saw lightning come inside of of two different houses I lived in. first time I was about 10 years old at my parents house which I now own and live in again the lightning came through the outside wall into the living room between me and one of my sisters sitting on the floor and went through the next wall into my parents bedroom it didn’t make a sound and no one was hurt and the second time I was probably 30 years old and lightning came through and big window in my kitchen and hit the leg on one of the metal chairs around the kitchen table and made a pinging sound and a small round ball of light went rolling across the floor and then just disappeared

Loved the big island! Stayed on the Kona Coast at the Fairmont Orchid back in 2006 for our early honeymoon for a week. Won the full paid trip from Wells Fargo when I was in auto finance. Also want to go back and do more sometime soon. Such an amazing place and we were just so overwhelmed that trip, young and couldn't get enough of the beautiful resort and the water. Got to do some snorkeling just off the coast and we rode out on the sea smoke catamaran. We did get a great hike in that took us through a bunch of lava flow tunnels which the natives used for years. Hope you get the chance to get back, would be great to see! If you haven't had it, Kona Coffee is absolutely amazing, couldn't get enough of it while we were there!
