Agreed. This 5700x3d is bad ass. Its so much faster than my 3700x, and my 3700x was FAST. Even though this 5700x3d has a lower clockspeed than my 3700x, its IPC has improved so greatly that it speeds things up impressively. Instead of being 2 CCX's comprised of 4cores+4cores separated by cache and infinity fabric with this 5000 series all 8 cores are unified without separation, so they're a unified ccx chiplet, all 8 cores crammed tightly together with this vcache on top. There's less distance for information to have to travel across, so it greatly increases speed. I like the design. Mine doesn't exceed 55C when I'm gaming. Good performing chip.

Meanwhile I'm using i7 9700 with usual single-use intel platform. To be fair, there was no X3D, when it came out and hypethreading was impacting game performance instead of improving it, while AMD had issues with ram compatibility. But still its disappointing that I need to replace mobo+ram and reinstall OS(the most annoying part) just to upgrade my CPU.

I have a R5 3600 and I know upgrading to any of the 5000X3D CPU is a no brainer, but unfortunately I'm one of the "lucky" few who has a B350 motherboard that doesn't support Ryzen 5000 (even with the latest BIOS update). So since I have to buy a new motherboard anyway, I finally pulled the trigger on AM5. I bought a R5 7600X + a B650 motherboard + 2x16GB DDR5 6000MT/s CL30 for about $480 total. I kinda overpaid for the motherboard (it has Gen 5 and Gen 4 NVMe slots, WiFi, Bluetooth, 4 RAM slots), but I don't really mind since I'm investing for the future. Had I went for a new AM4 motherboard and a 5000X3D combo (I can reuse my DDR4 RAM), I actually wouldn't save THAT much money anyway. For some reason, a R7 5700X3D is going for $280 where I live. And I'm pleased to know that R5 7600X has about the same performance as those X3D CPUs, plus I can upgrade in the future now! 👍👍👍

The good thing is, all this hype about cheap AM4 upgrades, means that someone who buy ryzen 5000x3d cannot do in short future a good upgrade path, they will need to buy am5+Zen6 with no upgrade path or wait a long long time (2026-2027) before AM6. That's long time to hunger. Now you have future proof motherboard (imo 370x series werent really, only since x570 we had beefy motherboards), and you step in with cheapest ryzen 7000 cpu, still as fast as am 5000x3d yet you can upgrade as far as 11950x3d (if the naming coninues to skip even ryzen generations (like 8000, 6000). I was hyped about the upgrade path but then realized, i'm to late in am4 to get anything from it. Plus motherboards of X670(e) are much stronger for future, and ryzen 7000 has really strong performance uplift for one generation, so even with the extra motherboard /ram cost it's sorta worth it. Since i waited 8 years for cpu, and i do tons of stuff on pc, i allowed myself to buy 7950x3d (wich is cheapest top end cpu launch yet for amd and it includes x3d wich is must for me).

Please, especially in these CPU roundup videos, find a way to add some tic-rate and turn time testing. GN have added late game Stellaris so a HOI4 test and a civ 6 turn time test would be really really great additions. They are widely played and are the kind of title many people turn to between AAA releases while also being the kind of title where budgeting more on the CPU instead of GPU can actually make sense.
@maxolina

Yes please, there are a lot of people who want better CPUs not for improved framerates but for improved turn times (civ, warhammer, etc) or improved simulation speed (Victoria3, Hoi4, etc). Those games are perfectly fine at 40-60fps but benefit massively from improved simulation speeds.

@102728
@102728 2 місяці тому
Problem with tic-rate games is that they see performance degradation as time progresses and the simulation contains more and more objects to perform calculations on. So even a relatively weak processor will do fine in the early game, while late game is where you'd want to focus your performance improvements since that's where you'll see the most - and the most impactful - degradation. Now I can't recall exactly how this was tested in the videos I saw it tested in (GN, Level 1 Techs), but my suspicion is that as the complexity increases with the game progressing, that in the late game you overflow that v-cache buffer more and more, reducing the benefit it offers more and more as you approach more and more performance impacted phases of the game. At some point raw clock speed is bound to outclass a v-cache benefit you get in the earlier game. Like I said, I don't know where, by my suspicion, the performance graphs between v-cache and clock speed would intersect, so I'd love to see some focused testing on that if anyone knows of a source that has done so.

Very nice info! Is there any tuning one can do to the 5xxxX3D if traditional overclocking is locked down? I am wondering if the 5700X3D could claw back some of the 5800X3D performance by tuning the PBO, undervolting, or mild BLK overclocking. Just in case the 5700X3d isn't binned with "bad silicon", but rather a way to segment the X3D-parts to allow for better market coverage in a similar fashion as the 4080 Super (but with lower price +lower performance in AMD:s case).

Only doable in B550 and maybe B450 motherboards. X570 on the other hand are hopeless in BCLK overclocking, at 102Mhz BCLK, USB ports and SATA drives will get wonky . Overclocking thru PBO is locked, it won't work for X3D .
@Nelthalin
@Nelthalin 2 місяці тому
bclk OC is hard on cheap boards. You need a bord with external clock gen to get high. I guess the 5700X3D are parts that did not meed the 5800X3D spec's so you probally wont get as high as on those. PBO does help not all boards support that for the X3D CPU's but i know MSI Does. That helpt with all core performance. Undervolting also raises all core boost clocks. Modern games do get some extra performance out of that. And offcourse Memory OC and higher IF clocks still help a bit but way less compared to the non X3D CPU's. Here is a little Stellaris benshmark i did: 5800X3D Stock 3600CL16 348 63w 4370MHz 5800X3D Tweaked 360 50w 4435-4480MHz Difference was 3.4% but at quite a bit lower power draw. Stellaris is not highly threaded to more modern games might show a bit more gain here. Tweaked setup was "Curve Optimizer -30 All cores + Undervolt VCORE&VSOC, 3733MHz 1:1:1 CL16 Tweaked timings and subtimings" Stock was 3600CL16 with only basic timing tweaked a bit not the subtimings.

Seeing which games did better on which CPU was kind of fascinating. I think this is one of the best "for science" benchmark videos you've put out lately, not just for buying advice. Seeing which games appeared to favor cache size, thread/core count, frequency, etc. in such an apples-to-apples comparison was really neat! I know the margins of difference were often small outside of "More VCache more better", but seeing a faster-clocked lower-core-count part beat the 5700X3d *most of the time* (but not all of the time!) really hammered home how little things make a difference when trying to squeeze out every inch of performance, and how you really can't win 'em all, any part choice will set you ahead in some games and behind in others. But still, trying to suss out the market and plan ahead makes building more exciting, IMO. Anyway, thanks for your dedication to robust testing and giving us interesting comparisons. I don't know what I'd do to understand the gaming market without this channel, almost nothing is as clear and to the point for what can be some esoteric performance discussions otherwise. To play devil's advocate, it reminds me of Intel's use of LGA775. They kept the platform for a long time and had a lot of changes throughout. I have a board here that can run a 2.8 GHz single core Pentium 4 or a 4.2+ GHz Core 2 Quad on the same platform. 4 times the cores, 12 times the cache, with a 50% clock and 60% IPC improvement. Rarely do we see a single platforms where the fastest CPU is an order of magnitude faster than the slowest. That is like going from a Ryzen 3 1200 to a Ryzen 9 5950X, except slightly more.

@@HappyBeezerStudios I dont completely disagree, but boards that support later s775 core2 based systems as well as s775 p4's are rare as hens teeth, whereas wide long-term support for socket 7 and am4 is the norm. I'm into a few alternative type OSes where s775 is the highest end platform and gpu support end at gf5 fx, so I've spent over a decade slowly but surely incrementally upgrading it whenever I can squeeze a few more % out. Its been a c2q 9650 @4.65ghz for many years, but mobos have changed, ram has changed, gpu has changed multiple times. All in an attempt to get the absolute best system possible for running Amithlon (sort of a hybrid emulator/AmigaOS3.9 running on bare metal type system where only the cpu is emulated). Well basically i gained 200MHz of boost clocks. Previously it ran at stable 4350MHz, despite the Liquid Freezer II 360mm keeping it well into the 59-62°C range. With 4070 Super and regular 5700X, Watch Dogs Legion with RTX does not exceed 100 FPS on 1080P, so my guess (It pains me that it is so hard to find info on which pairs of CPU/GPU you are likely to be limited by which of the two since CPUs are tested with 4090) is that on anything lower tier than 4080 and with most games you will be usually GPU limited (unless you lower the graphics settings).

Depends on the resolution, refresh rate, and the game. You can find the answer easily enough by running the games you play and noting how often your GPU usage drops far below 100%. Make sure you also note the GPU clocks. You also shouldn't bother trying to render more frames than your refresh rate, as you'll do nothing but waste power and generate screen tearing.

I have seen a small but measurable improvement in fps when I disable SMT on my 5800x3d vs my 5800x. (at least in the titles I'm playing at the moment.) After some googleing around, the strongest hypothesis for this discrepancy is that the extra L3 afforded by X3d closes the CPU pipeline bubble issue to keep the ALU and FPU fed with data in a timely fashion, something that SMT is a tradeoff design feature to address keeping the CPU pipeline fed with data to avoid what is called pipeline bubbles at the expense of latency. Some other minor tech tubers have anecdotal testing on 7800x3d that show similar results as mine on other titles. My tests show the Linpack takes decent hit in performance with SMT disabled on a 5800x whereas on my 5800x3d the performance is identical. (The hypothesis is that the L3 cache is able to keep the pipeline properly fed.) On poorly optimized and light multi-threaded workloads, such as the multi treaded bench in CPU-Z, SMT still sees an advantage on both CPUs. Zen3 was the first AMD architecture to feature real "zero bubble" pipeline optimizations where Zen2, and prior, did not. This may explain why Intel's next CPU uarch does not feature SMT as other CPU architectures, ARM et al, are also featuring zero bubble pipeline and branch predictor advancements that address the issue of parallelism and pipeline bubbles more efficiently than SMT, which was originally designed to address both as a HW & OS scheduler hack of sorts.

I went from a 5700X to a 5700X3D. Seemed pointless to me at first, but i noticed the 1% lows skyrocketed. games like Forza are making good use of the cache and at one point on 1080p i saw my fps reach 165 without having to use DLSS. I am actually GPU bound now by my 4070 and kinda wish i had gotten a 7900 XT. I upgraded my school IT guy's rig and he is happy with the 5700X. it replaced his 3700X

Probably never. Atm, adding V-cache means a reduction in clocks. It's all well and good for strictly gaming. But, for production purposes having the higher clocks is preferable. It also gives AMD a reason to sell more sku's and price the X3D variants at a premium. I'd love for every cpu to have V-cache and run >6ghz. In the forseeable future it's either or.

I'm still using the original boot SSD and GPU: 960 EVO 250GB and GTX 1080. Upgrading to an RTX 4070 Super and this should still last me several more years. Man I can always count you guys to drop a video on the exact topic I'm contemplating, exactly when I need it! My 5800X somehow fried itself so I'm using this as an opportunity to swap cases and deep clean. I don't want to upgrade to AM5 cause I don't want to pay for a new mobo or DDR5 ram just yet, so I'm considering the 5800X3D and 5900X since they're both on sale right now. I mainly use my PC for gaming and casual use like youtube and discord. Sometimes I think about getting into video editing, but I haven't yet and mostly use it for gaming. With that in mind, should I go for the 5800X3D on sale right now for $359 or the 5900X, which is on sale for $299 right now? For reference, I'm on a 3080 and 32gb of ram at 1440p.
