I remember Barry Sanders as the guy that looked like a video game. Never showboated, always quiet and humble, didn't even celebrate touchdowns in the endzone... The best I ever saw!

He never lost a step, we never saw him decline. He’s immortalized forever in his highlights. He never looked old or mortal. Just adds to his legend.

For those who were too young to watch him when he was playing, he was truly a once in a universe type of player. Not once in a lifetime, once in an entire universe. It was an honor to watch him play the game. It's like people who are too young to have watched Michael Jordan play. You just feel sorry for people who didn't get that chance. Except Barry was different. A lot of guys could do the things MJ could do since he left the league, just not as consistently, or as stylish, or with the competitive fire to win. Barry Sanders just simply did things on a routine basis that you didn't think human beings could do. And we know that he's unique because it's still 20 years after his early retirement and there's still no one we've ever seen who could do the things Barry Sanders could do on a football field. He was an absolute marvel to watch.

I always commended Barry Sanders for walking away when he did. He NEVER cared about personal accolades or setting records. He was never comfortable being the center of attention He was sick and tired of losing! The Lions front office continued to make terrible draft picks and trades and his frustration level reached a breaking point. He didn't care ONE BIT about breaking Payton's record...he wanted to WIN...PERIOD. The Lions treated him HORRIBLY during the last 2 seasons of his career. Barry Sanders' father? Did EVERYTHING right raising his son. He was Barry's biggest fan on the sidelines rooting for him for his entire career. But he never publicly gave him the praise everybody else did. He always said (in public anyways) that Jim Brown was the best running back of all time and that Barry was 2nd. TOUGH LOVE. The kind of love only great dads know how to give. Sanders' father deserves even MORE credit for raising an outstanding, humble, well-spoken human being. A son that was a once in a generation superstar who possessed strong ethics, morals and character. A son that knew how to act both on and off the field. This is something that is sadly missing in most of today's professional sports figures.

I start to see american football when I see this guy, in my country in that time almost nobody see this sport but I was shock and amaze seeing this little guy doing that so I became an NFL fan because of Barry Sanders.

He was a gift to us suffering lions fans. Our team sucked with a couple good seasons over decades of ineptitude. Yet we tuned in for every lions game, Barry was gonna do something we hadn't seen yet. We were rarely disappointed. He was unique in so many ways.

His vision was on another level. To be able to see those cutbacks and lanes however big or small they were is insane

Growing up in Michigan and witnessing this man bring the Lions from the laughing stock of the NFL to feared was amazing. Some of the best memories I have watching Football with my dad. Whenever I watch these I get so sad, not for me(a Detroit fan my whole life), but for Barry. The man deserved better. If he played on almost any other team, he would have won a super bowl and easily still have the NFL rushing record today. There is no doubt in my mind, you take 1997 Barry Sanders and plug him into any NFL team today, and they win the super bowl. There never has been and never will be another one like him, pure ability, you can't teach that. Absolutely amazing. Only the Detroit Lions could make a man like that want to walk away from the thing he loved, that hurts, as a fan, to know it was the organization that let him down. I honestly wish, if they weren't going to build a team around him, they would have just traded him. I still would have watched and loved him!

Best running back of all time. Hands down. I remember watching him as a kid. He'd run into a crowd, pop back out, and turn on the after burners. It's a shame he was on that team. Someone that good deserves a Superbowl ring.

I grew up watching Barry Sanders and I when he retired I wasn't mad. He put everything he had into wanting to win its just the Lions organization never reciprocated. I thought it was stupid for anyone to hold a grudge against Sanders for leaving when he had to carry the team every season. When he left. I was just disappointed I was never going to see him run again. He will always be the greatest running back to ever touch a football in my eyes and I was blessed to be able to watch him during his career.

Remember watching him sit out the end of the last game in 89 when he only needed 10 yards to get the rushing title. Such a humble dude

That jab step at 13:15 is something he did constantly, that I have never seen another athlete replicate. The speed of it! Watching grown, professional athletes getting frozen in place bc they cant stop themselves from reacting to the move, even as they know it *just* happened. Never got old to watch, still mesmerizes me, today.

You know, now that I'm rewatching this for the 5th time... it occurs to me that even if he played flag football he'd have still dominated everyone. Watching this video gives me goose bumps when I see things I remember seeing live. He was always so humble when he got into the endzone.
