Like Cicero in the Roman Republic, there are always a handful of chroniclers who can see and articulate clearly the social, cultural, and political realities of empires in terminal decline. They call out the bankruptcy of an inept and corrupt ruling class, blinded by hubris, as well as a populace that has checked out of civic life and is entranced by bread and circus spectacles. In his trilogy “Blowback,” “The Sorrows of Empire,” and “Nemesis: The Last Days of the American Republic,” Chambers Johnson does a masterful job of showing how and why we are disintegrating. So does Andrew Bacevich, who, in his newest book of essays, “On Shedding an Obsolete Past: Bidding Farewell to the American Century,” writes about the debacles that have beset the American empire since the Vietnam war, a conflict he fought in as a young army officer. Bacevich warns that Americans’ inability to be self-critical, to dissect and understand the litany of disasters that have followed on the heels of Vietnam, including decades of fruitless warfare in the Middle East, will have terrible consequences for us and much of the rest of the globe.
Andrew Bacevich is a retired army colonel and Emeritus Professor of History and International Relations at Boston University. He is the cofounder and president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, and the author of numerous books, including “The New American Militarism,” “The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism,” “America’s War for the Greater Middle East,” and “After the Apocalypse: America’s Role in a World Transformed.”

"The goal is NOT to win the war. The goal is to use the war to wash money out of the tax bases of the United States and out of the tax bases of European countries and back into the hands of a Transnational Security Elite. @@johngatewood4638 War as a force of collective struggle I understand. Say, when one tribe wants to rob another tribe, another tribe has to fight back and maybe even reach for help. We pay wages to our manufacturing workers and our military. They support their families, pay taxes and support businesses in towns across the States. We were attacked unprovoked on Sept. 11th. Iraq citizens complained they were gassed, and Saddam refused inspectors' access. South Korea and South Vietnam asked for our help when they were under attack, then stole from our military creating a black market because they choose crime over honest paying jobs. Same with Haiti and the Philippines, chose the excitement of gang life instead of construction jobs and healthcare jobs to build their own economy. That's not our fault.

The Afghan War (20 years) was a HUGE success for the parties that matter: The Military-Industrial Complex. That "failed" war was spectacularly successful for the defense industry, and it was fought on behalf of the defense industry and its political leanings. The largest US export is WAR, so a war's "success" is measured by its cost...the more it costs, the more successful it is. It's that simple.

One of the biggest contributors to American decline is the amount of pointless spending on defense. While every other developed country spent about 2% of GDP, we just wasted 5-10% a year for decades. All the advantages we gained for the past 100 years was just thrown away. As a result, our per capita income is now in line with other countries when 50 years ago, we were far and away the leader.

Its not like it was useless. That dominance on military power made us the global police, giving us rights to cheap international shipping, labor, resources, ece, making the USD the world's reserve currency, granted enormous political and cultural power, ece. The only reason international shipping isnt plagued by piracy is the omnipresent US navy, in an agreement stretching to the end of WWII. The issue is, given all that power and all the resources, the powers that be squandered all of it instead of building a resilient, forward looking nation.

I'm really unpersuaded by the suggestion that "we were deceived, we just didn't know, it took time but now we realise" because there were people at the start of *every single one* of these Imperialist campaigns who were shouting and screaming and demonstrating and writing articles and books explaining in detail the insanity of it all. Those voices were deliberately and successfully ignored, marginalised and sabotaged? And that treatment of antiwar voices continues, even today. I can understand the lumpenproles being dragged along, but the academics and intellectuals and cultural elites were and are on board with the bloody horror, - war crimes - to a significant degree, every single time. And their support and rationalisations, often a small matter of tacit approval, legitimised the whole thing every single time. These days the LGBTQ.adjacent establishment have joined those providing fig leaves for war crimes, but the effect is the same. (And as a LGBTQ person myself I'm far from happy at how our subculture is used to whitewash these terrible crimes). "Yeah, Vietnam , Korea, Afghanistan and Iraq all had bogus pretexts, *everyone* knows that now [everyone doesn't know that, Hollywood in particular seems to have missed the memo], but dude, they're *definitely* telling the whole truth about Ukraine,/Taiwan This time it's the real deal. The real imperialists are [surprise, surprise] the official enemies of Washington, and we right thinking leftists should support the effort" Brrrrr.

May the delegation of Members of the Australian Parliament going to Washington DC to talk directly with their counterparts in the US Legislature, to drop the charges against Julian Assange, go in strength & honour. 65 Australian MPs have signed the letter they carry Multiple elected politicians from multiple democratic parliaments around the globe have joined the call to free Julian Assange. The Australian MPs are thoughtful diplomats on this matter. Australian diplomacy here amplifies how thoroughly the US State, along with the CIA State-within-US State, have destroyed US's exceptional problem solving diplomacy as a global force for humanity. WWII. American investors helped build a strong and potentially warlike Germany before the war, and they finally joined the war after the allies had virtually bankrupted themselves fighting. USA pops up for the final few years as paid mercenaries in effect. The debt that they helped create with land lease and loans ended the British empire so that they could take over, and they even helped the Germans financially after the war (again). So build a military state in a distant continent with financial investment. Watch or help it set itself against a neighbour, far away from the fallout of the conflict. Profit from the war itself. Make more money still in the rebuilding phase. Germany last century; Ukraine this one. Gee thanks, from Europe.

when He talks about the 1619 project becoming dominant, what comes to my mind at the moment is how literally everything on the left is about race/gender Identity/politics... even when it's not. Also, there is this shift away from philosophies such as judging a person by their character, and towards shallow plays at 'representation'. it's a toxic silo that makes the people feel like their victimization is literally the only thing that exists in the world, and thus nuance is lost, and empathy for the other is also lost. and tolerance of differing opinions are lost.

In WW2 far more Russians and Chinese died than Americans. Even in WW2 the idea the USA was a saviour was just history being rewritten. A better example, but less well known than the Suez Crisis, is when the British Empire built Concentratiom camps in the 1950s for Kenyans in an attempt to squash an uprising. British empire was already well into a decline by WW2. I think the USA’s peaked about the time David Hasslehoff was singing on a crane above the Berlin Wall.
