Whilst many climate activists are fighting deforestation, China is going the extra mile to stop it's deserts from spreading by planting an insane amount of tree's, building massive forests to combat the problem. Today we look at the insane engineering behind this China's insane forestation mega project.

My criticism is they are growing another "crop" all be it with significant carbon capture. As commented below (Mossy Earth), for increasing biodiversity you need to mix the species planted using local adapted species and creat a "forest". Even in a forest, there is a potential for harvest if that is one aim of the project.

Problem is you’re talking about low biodiversity trees vs no trees. Why not solve the problem first before introducing more biodiversity?
@GriseldaBlanco-kt2to
@GriseldaBlanco-kt2to 3 місяці тому
@@jaytang4954 Exactly, they've already made huge progress. In the beginning I can understand they just want to wind block and lock up the sand with dropped foliage as much as possible. The other thing is all these trees even if mono culture are creating a canopy to shield the saplings and other upcoming plants below them, so its multi generational. And in the desert people grow like this all the time, in the beginning they try to grow whatever will be fast and provide shade and a starter canopy, after that you can get more picky with species.

China don't have typical western mentality that I want to see result tomorrow. Just like the current generation of Chinese success was built on hard work and sacrifice of previous generation of hardworking Chinese. You can't reach the moon in one step. Mossy Earth reports that these monoculture forests did not do so well, because they planted monoculture trees from foreign shores instead of desert adapted species that are native. Those trees suck up water even more and were used for lumber, not let to rot into the soil and enrich it. Mossy Earth also reports that they have started to plant native species and that is working better. *Numbers of trees don't well as native trees, shrubs, insects and animal life that is adapted to the desert. There are areas, specifically in south China, companies rent the land, Hills and planted trees harvested for paper making, and lumber as you mentioned, but for those planted in desert is not allowed to cut down for any purpose. that kind of re greening the desert should follow in Africa and Australia so more land can become productive as agriculture , water retention and hopefully lower planet temperature

Amazing.. let's hope they don't just use a single species of trees, high risk of disease spread.

The images were a bit random and misleading. For eksempel, are all the forest images, from this project?

It wasnt urbanization that led to the deserts. The deserts have been there for ages. Over grazing, logging were the causes.

The stock footage makes it hard to know which footage is actually related to this project and which image are just a random rain forest or cabbage field. Please highlight unrelated footage to avoid misleading the viewers.

Where tjey get the water for this massive project? Groundwater? And can this new forest sustain itself without human intervention?. Gobi is a desert because it located too far inland, so any rain clouds from the sea cannot reach it. Also it doesn't have any big river system whatsoever. I highly doubt that this forest would be sustainable.

All I saw in that video was a monoculture mixed with green washing propaganda. I did not see any food plants or recognize any nitrogen fixing plants in that video. It will be interesting to see how this project looks 20 years from now.
