They all Stick and Move ( Jab and dance ) even though they could never perfect Ali's movements they still learnt a lot from him . Play Ali Liston first fight and watch Lewis fight they all learnt one thing from him STICK AND MOVE. Only after Ali did people adopt this Technique. Before that people fought toe to toe in a straight line. When I watch all these boxers , I see a lot of Alice movements in them. Yeah and he also said Ernie Shavers is the hardest hitter he ever faced and he also said Joe Frazier hit like a truck and made him feel like he was dying and he also said Ken Norton gave him the toughest 24 rounds of his entire career. They were all average at best but Ali complimented each one of them as really good fighters.

Un record secondo, solamente a quello di Rocky Marciano (imbattutto). Purtroppo lo hanno spremuto fino all' osso: e cio' gli e' valsa l' etichetta di pugile poco potente. Non avere un pugno singolo da Ko non significa non essere potenti: Ali' aveva combinazioni da Ko. Il primo Ali' ha vinto quasi tutti gli incontri per Ko: il secondo, era un Ali' depotenziato e meno potente con una grande astuzia, intelligenza tattica, meno mobilita', meno velocita' e quindi meno potenza ma con grande resistenza e un grande mento piu' il suo talento innato. Not exactly. The transatlantic satellite picture (relatively new in 1963) distorted the physiques of both fighters. In the first four rounds, Clay chose to fight Cooper straight up and in close, not moving much at all to his left or right. Bad strategy. After the knockdown, Clay got serious, peppered Henry with the jab, keeping him at a distance and eventually ending the fight. This fight reminded me of the two Leonard-Duran fights. In their fist fight, Leonard chose to slug it out with Duran and lost. In the rematch, Leonard moved a lot better, using his speed and jab for more often and more effectively, frustrating Duran to the point where he said 'no mas.' Against Liston, Clay kept himself at a distance (Sonny had an 84" reach), moving superbly to his left and to his right, using the jab to great effect, against a fighter who could take him out with one or two punches. Clay split Liston's face open and that forced Sonny to quit. Clay didn't take Cooper seriously, however, he had a great deal of respect (understandably) for Liston.

Let's be honest Liston took a dive in both fights.and Clay/Ali. Was not the greatest heavyweight. But he was the greatest entertainer outside the ring

Clay basically kicked his ass and Sonny was humiliated and embarrassed--so he quit. Similar to 'No mas', in a way. The second fight was a different story. He definitely went 'in the tank'. I don't think we'll ever know the whole story...

That must have been something to have seen live. I really never knew this fight was that good, until I watched it here. It was a true slug fest.

First fight I ever saw, and don't think I've missed a heavyweight fight ever since. We all rave about Ali, Tyson, and Lewis, but a man who never got the credit he deserved was Larry Holmes. I rate him right up with those guys.

The Frazier left hook knockdown in round 15 was more devastating than the Cooper knockdown for sure. Stunned badly and exhausted after all those rounds of punishment, Ali got up off the canvas and had to take more vicious shots from Frazier until the final bell. Incredible.

@@larryjohnson2306 Yes, it was more devastating, to be honest, but what I think made this Cooper knockdown more extraordinary in another way was that this was Cassius Clay/Muhamad Ali at his fastest. Back then, he was considered so fast that nobody could catch him with a really good solid blow but he could sure catch them, this was where 'float like a butterfly sting like a bee' came from, he was definitely the fastest heavyweight of all time, I question whether he was really the greatest of all time, because I think Jack Johnson was more deserving of having that said about him but Ali was unquestionably faster moving in his prime. By the mid-70s, he wasn't quite as fast as that though, he was only 22 in this Cooper fight, by 1974 he was in his 30s, the spring was still there but it was waining, he was heavier, getting older in boxing terms, etc and sadly we saw much worse decline by the end of the 70s, he should never have been allowed to go on for so long.

@@crashburn3292 he wouldn't have won easily. Clay came out like a bull in the 5th. He hit Cooper with a lot more punches in the 5th than he did in the first 4 rounds. Clay was boxing and toying with Cooper in the first 4 rounds. You can go back and look in the 3rd round he was teasing Cooper, and the announcer said he was ungentlemanly. He was gettin in his head. Cooper's lucky Clay hit em in the face so much and got his eye gushin. The ref stopped the fight to save Cooper gettin knocked out. You can say what you want, but there wasn't nothin easy about this fight. They both boxed well, and had a great fight, but Clay came on strong in the 5th. That knock down got em motivated in a major way, and you could see play time was over. I just went back and watched the 5th round again and counted the punches. Clay threw about 37 punches to Cooper's 6 punches. And Clay landed almost every one and Cooper didn't land any. It was about a minute and a half in the 5th round before the ref stopped the fight, and clay landed about 35 punches and Cooper didn't land one punch. I'm tellin you, the ref could see what was comin, and he stopped the fight to save Cooper from gettin knocked out!!!

Had Cooper got a chance to challenge the champ Sonny Liston before Ali did the following year, he would have had a great chance to beat Liston, who was in decline at this time (1964). Internationally Cooper was/is very much underrated. Unfortunately he got cut so easily and therefore lost some important fights, he otherwise could have won, at least on points.

Cooper's left hook was like dynamite. A very tough fight for Ali. Cooper was very dangerous. Ali was messing around and did not take this fight as serious as he should have. Ali for me is the Greatest of all time and a great performance by Cooper

More likely that he was still adjusting from the amateur to the professional ranks, and had yet to develop the killer instinct of a pro. Compare with his fights against Williams in '66 or Foley in '67, and you'll see a different kind of fighter who has learned the animal instinct to go in for the kill.
