Spice is 20 years old, working with Positive Young Women Voices in Dandora, Tanzania. Her work with young adolescent girls and women is about encouraging and motivating them to know that being a girl in the world means that you are of great worth and value. Spice’s vision is to change her community and make it a safe place for girls to open up about their issues.
“My film explores my own story about the challenges of pursuing a high school education in the backdrop of a community where almost half of the students who start out never finish their education. I talk about my own experience in highlighting challenges in my community such as drugs, early teenage pregnancy, and the economic limitations that hinder the pursuit of an education.
This is in addition to the lack of role models and the fact that acquiring education is not really seen to give anyone good opportunities in life. I seek to give hope in this film, and through highlighting some of the challenges, contribute to the conversations that need to take place to see a shift in the push for young people to finish their education both on a peer to peer level but also on a macro level.”
