Don't Get Scammed - Why I DON'T Do Top Ten or Best Of Videos

I get asked all the time - Why I Don't Have any TOP TEN videos or BEST OF videos for backpacks, tents, sleeping bags, etc.
The answer is simple;
I don't do Top Ten or Best of videos because videos like that are designed to sell products instead of helping people make educated decisions which are right for them and their needs.
This type of content that I am speaking of has been around for a very long time and is a sort of get rich quick scheme that countless UKpostsrs and online content creators have attempted.
That's exactly why I don't do it.

As a subscriber since about 2013, I can honestly say that 99% of my current gear list comes from your reviews. And I love and have used everything on it. From the ILBE backpack to the Esbit folding stove, to a LiteFighter tent. Nothing has ever failed out camping. Cheers Luke, Strength and Honor right back to ya. Always remember that samurai translated, is ‘to serve’. 🤙

Yup, and the stats are questionable. I'd love to know where the "74% of users... purchased a product" stat came from. I'm not sure if it is because Luke forgets what it is like to be a smaller UKpostsr, but UKposts is not a get rich quick scheme (especially in the outdoor niche) and it is impossible to build an audience without the trust of that audience. If you ask the majority of UKpostsrs in the outdoor niche (I regularly talk with many), they will tell you that the relationship you have with your audience is way more valuable than $100, $1000, or even $10,000. it saddens me to see how cynical Luke is when it comes to the outdoor niche while I know most UKpostsrs genuinely want to help, inspire, and educate.

 @JustinOutdoors Hi! I'm a small UKpostsr. And I agree with Luke - love to know where those stats are from, yes...but I am seeing a lot of affiliate brand-deal dodginess from larger channels, a lot of illegal undeclared paid promo, etc. It's eating that trust. It's got so bad that if I see T**u or D*******n on a video, especially ones reviewing a brand/range rather than a range of products - I know it's probably a brand deal and I now just ignore what they say. Cos those companies are splashing big money on influencers across all niches. And especially don't trust them since the former sells total trash, I fell foul of their sellers shady practices recently, have a return ongoing.... It can happen on the high end though, I wonder how many subs before Hilleberg will send ME a tent? :-P (I am joking, like Luke my channel is 100% independent, and not going for these deals, a lot of us new breed we side-eye this spam astroturfing). Love your cold weather content btw.
@harduphiker
@harduphiker 2 місяці тому
Not all of us. I've made negative videos which brands hate, and called out greenwashing in the industrty (to aggro and crickets cos YT and others don't want to push videos about that), and only spend my own money. When I started I thought those sponsorships or deals might be a good thing, but no, I quickly realised they were dodgy and so have never done one, and stayed 100% independent, not even had a single freebie. I do see larger channels profiting off rather obvious brand deals, or showing off free gear and not officially flagging it, and agree with Luke theey tend to be this sort of video format (I'd say the other listicle ones can be valid - so the 'My fave gear of 2024' or '10 things you should bring on a hike' might be talking gear but less likely to be a veiled advert). What's telling is if a YTer always recommends the same brand, across all types of gear. That's unlikely, in the same type of gear, I could see it (say types of sleep systems), but the best tent manufacturer is unlikely to make the best pack or sleeping bag,, etc...or if the video is based around a brand or specfic seller, that's a massive red flag that it's undeclared paid promo. Who makes a video praising a whole company unless it's Apple? (and even then I'd be sceptical of such fanboying). I suspect this will only change when the advertising standards orgs start fining people (II think it's above 100k subs in the UK, not sure what it is in the US, influencers come under advertising regs for paid promo).

Love ya, you're content is great. Here is another opinion. When I was prepping for a PCT hike I started watching a butt load of outdoor gear videos in order to purchase the right equipment. That's actually how I got exposed to your content. While I probably watched 20 hours of your videos in the fall of 2020 (and was very entertained) I sadly didn't find any of the gear I needed through your channel. On the other hand, I found an ideal tent and a great sleeping bag through "Top 10" videos. Those top 10 videos didn't give me all the information that I would later search for before completing the purchase, but they exposed me to a very wide selection of options in a short amount of time. I agree that pretending to be an expert in order to sell affiliate links is crap. But for me as a consumer, looking to make a purchase, the top 10 video format provided an essential service of wide information in a short amount of time.

I like and respect your reviews. They have prompted me to looking at my gear differently. Especially when shopping. When watching a review where you contact or receive a response from a company, I will follow those for no other reason than to hear what they say and how they may change or improve their products. I watch the videos for entertainment. But if I do see a product that interests me, I can look it up on my own. Right on, Luke!!

If I ever do watch a video like that, I like to see a person, first of all, not just voice. And I like seeing the product in their hand. But I also see more than one video I recently asked in one of your videos where you talked about your favourite something, if you could add a budget option not necessarily a list, just an alternative, but I have come to appreciate your style of making videos and I've noticed that the products you feature are worthy products, doesn't matter if they're cheap or expensive, new or old, you talk about a product that is worth talking about, or a product that is to be avoided. So thank you for making these type of videos, agenda free.

I've tried out a few things you've had on the channel. My favorite one you reviewed was the One Tigris camp chair. Believe it or not, it's the only chair I can sit in if I herniate a lower disc and it helps me heal by holding me in the perfect position to not aggravate it. Luke, one area that would be wonderful is -- what to look for in a good product. Be it coolers, tents, ground clothes, stakes, stoves, whatever. As an example -- knives...everyone needs one, but what type of knife will hold an edge the best, what type of knife will strike a flint the best, what type of knife will not break when you are batoning logs... Another area is -- what to look for when bad goes to worse...example -- what are the signed of hyperthermea, how do you stay alive when your core body temp is dropping? What about heatstroke? It is so easy to not hydrate enough in the spring, fall that the possibility of heatstroke is very real if you are a flat plane person and hicking 5 miles up even gradual inclines.

You mentioned multiple times about your youthful trips with your twin brother which I think embedded in you a passion for the outdoors that very few of your viewers have at your level. Strangely, though, I never saw you interface with your bro now on a hike or camping trip. You mentioned even doing a Christmas Day trip alone, which is extremely unusual I think, and no mention of your bro there for a Holiday visit or joining you on a hike. I personally buy what I feel will work for ME. Outdoor gear is not a one size fits all. I started out buying tents, sleeping bags at Walmart or Kmart. They worked FOR ME. And I prefer camping in the Fall and Winter months. Living in Ohio, I get the weather I love. So for me, if it keeps me dry, warm and sheltered, I'm good. It's all trial and error. We are all different, have our own idiosyncrasies, our own way of doing things. I watch your reviews and consider the pros and cons. Luke, I thoroughly enjoy your agenda free UKposts channel. Also, I appreciate your honest reviews that detail the pros and cons of the featured item. Keep up the great work! P.S. This is the first time I've ever left a UKposts comment!!

I'm glad you did this video. Truth be told is, I DO NOT watch best of or top anything videos, I could absolutely care less what any influencer has to say. In fact I watch your videos Luke precisely because you don't do those type of videos. I don't see you Luke as an influencer, I regard you as an educator. That's why I can trust your opinion. P.S. It is also why I am a subscriber, and believe me when I say I do not subscribe to many.

Thank you for stating the truth. This is used not only on outdoor products but across the board including many different products. It is so nice to hear someone being truthful and direct. Appreciate your ability to be thorough as well as your integrity. 👍

You are totally right Luke.. NOTHING is a one size fits all best of.. NOTHING.. it's all dependent upon you, your intent, your skill level, your mission. It doesn't matter if you're picking a car a tent or as we just did, a 4x4 quad. Something that is perfect for me, might be awful for the people next door. The two things that bug me the most are a. people presuming to tell me what is best for me.. and b. people who FREAK OUT because my experience is not their experience, and I don't see eye to eye with them. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks is OKAY, man....

I highly agree with you Luke! So much BS out there now. I appreciate the work, effort, and non-BS approach that you take. Your community here trusts you. Thank you! I took a course in advertising when I was in college. The instructor told us within the first couple of days, "Advertising is mostly BS. It's a means that is used to sell a product to an uneducated customer. It actually assumes that the average American is a total idiot". I've always agreed with that. Keep it real, and keep doing it way you're doing it brother. We trust you, and appreciate you.

I want to do a 1 year shakedown of my gear. I believe everyones best set up is different... cost is definitely the biggest factor for me... only have a 0 F degree sleep system, pushed it from -18f to +30f. 30 was more uncomfortable but at least wouldnt have to worry about dieing haha.

BRAVO Luke! I'm sure, that for myself, as for many thousand others, it is the HONESTY that draws me to your channel! If you like it, you say so. If it's junk, you say that as well. I think I can give a little insight to why people keep asking you to make these best of whatever videos. I myself, have worked in retail for over thirty years, and have done some selling in that time. I was never a "hard seller" and I would often get these customers almost begging me to try and sell them on whatever item they were interested in. We are all human and imperfect beings, and way back in the back on ones mind is the innate ability to want to blame mistakes on someone else besides ourselves. And if the sales person at (insert name of any business that sells some sort of products) isn't happy with the purchase they want someone to blame besides themselves. It's a too prevalent thing these days. Why in the world is it MY fault. Well, for one, I don't ever feel that way. If I make a mistake (I'm human just like every one else) I MADE THE DECISION to purchase not someone else. It is on ME. If more people felt that way, the world would be a different place. Anyway, keep up the GOOD FIGHT Luke!! WE APPRECIATE IT!

It really should be just about being honest about a product and letting the sale rest on that! I think condensation, rain and wind are all qualities that tents face with use, and around lake Eufaula in Oklahoma, condensation is heavy in the mornings, even during the hottest parts of summer!! A lot of these tents can’t handle that heavy condensation! You’ll wake up with water raining down on you inside the tent! I appreciate the honest feedback you give on camping gear. Seeing how well a camp stove works etc! Thank you!

I agree with you, when someone recomends something like an insulated sleep pad, when they say they used it at so and so tempurature, they never say that they are a warm or cold sleeper. One person who is a very warm sleeper says that they were very comfortable at 30 ° while another person who is a cold sleeper freezes his/her a~~ off at 45° based on their recomendation. I watch your videos, look at your gear list to see what you are using. Helps me make a decision instead of buying something that won't work 3-4 times before finding one that does. Just remember the saying, "Buy Once, Cry Once. That way you won't end up with a closet full of junk.

I have in the past bought stuff recommended by other youtubers, and the products were not good. Very few youtubers have my trust. I know high end gear is good, but the budget stuff is hit and miss, and I'm glad you are more critical of these budget brands.

what i've found best to do when i see one of the channels talked about is: click the 3 stacked dots under the preview of the video, then click where it says "don't recommend channel" in that menu. this fixes the problem.

Just because "top 10" videos are designed to sell you stuff doesn't mean that you can't make an actual top 10 list of tents with no agenda behind it. Based off of everything you said in the video, you are one of the few people that is actually qualified to make those top lists. I understand the point of this video but you're making it seem as if you making the same video would be the same as the others and that simply isn't the case. I would love a top 10 from you Luke.

I'm glad I'm about done buying gear. I've hit this point in my hunting and outdoors "career" where I am no longer profitable to companies, because I'm not buying much of anything anymore. A lot of stuff has changed since 2020, and one large change has been the outdoor gear market. A ton of cheap crap, with shills out the wazzo. If I was just getting into the outdoors within the last couple years, i'd be confused as hell as to what to buy.

I research everything that I consider purchasing and then I search UKposts videos to to find the reviews, I will look at videos of people that I follow and trust to see what they think about an item and then I search your videos to see if you have a review. I have bought several items that you have given good reviews on and I am not sorry that I did. Thanks for everything that you do.

For a long time every time I saw your channel’s videos suggested in my feed I skipped over them because I assumed they were exactly the kind of videos you’re talking about. To be fair your channel’s name is pretty generic like a lot of these product pushers you’re talking about but I’m glad to say that you have one of the best channels in this space. Your reviews are good but what’s even better is that you actually make content showing yourself on camp outs, hikes, and just being outside. The ratio of outings to reviews is what makes you stand out. When I watch other channels to research products I’m interested in I’m often left wondering “do you actually ever use this stuff”. Not you. Keep it going 👍👍

Thank you Luke, I really appreciate your perspective explaining why you do what you do! I have been misled like many others ,by googling the top ten or the top three of anything In the city where I live in ,I went to one of the top three tax preparers , and the guy was a slimeball You are right, do your own research, find out about the person or company first, before you handover your money for their goods or services
