Back early in our marriage, my mother came over to our house for dinner with her condescending attitude towards my wife. It got to the point where my wife was crying and when I asked, "What's wrong?" she said it was your mother. I immediately told my mother to come into the kitchen and told her, "This is my wife's home and you will apologize to her right now or leave" My Mom played dumb with her, "Me, what did I do? I have nothing to apologize for." I told her to leave and not come back until she apologized. It took her 6 months to apologize. Oh and BTW, my wife and I have been married 50 years

My mother n law was the perfect relationship. I loved her so much and was so grateful for her love for me. I now have a son in law and he is wonderful to my daughter. My husband and I love and respect him. His parents welcomed us all into their lives and we feel we have this amazing extended family.

My mother in law treated me awful and rarely acknowledged my presence for 20 years. She finally decided to get to know me and the last ten years of her life we were great friends. When Michelle said "she needs to get over it" and "there's no reason at this point that she should want to be there", I knew immediately that this girl is all about herself and has no empathy for others. My EX mil treated me this way for 8 miserable years, I didn't fight with her out of respect but I was so unhappy, I finally bundled her baby boy up and gave him back to her. Found myself a nice man with a nice family.

Thank God, my husband and I both had wonderful inlaws....there was never a problem. I loved his parents, his siblings and all the nieces and nephews, and he did the same with my family. I can't imagine dealing with a situation like this. My kids are both married to wonderful people, we've never had a problem and I'm accepted by both their families. Peace is wonderful and we were blessed. He's been gone for 20 years and I still get along well with his family. I'm still very blessed.

I feel like nothing was resolved. When Dr Phil told the mom that she not the mom of a 3 year old anymore, that she's the mom of an adult son, and that she's not less important, she just has a different relationship with him, the aunt said that her son didn't know that. I can't believe Dr Phil didn't agree with her and shut her down. The son is absolutely not acknowledging and respecting his mom. He's not doing anything to help his relationship with her. The things he's allowing his fiancee to say is appalling. As the mom of 2 adult sons, I'm really disappointed in how this show went and that Dr Phil didn't dress down her son for allowing that disrespect to happen.

For 33 years I’ve told hubby if we ever break up I’ll fight for custody of his parents if we divorce. I’m the luckiest daughter-in-law ever and now consciously try to be the best Mom-in-law I can be with my kids spouses. How could I not adore a girl who looks at my son the same wonderful way I look at my husband? How could I not adore a fella who relishes my daughter being exactly who she is. Family…it’s everything!

I feel for the MIL. This girl is totally and completely toxic. She reminds me of my son's ex, who tried her best to isolate my son from the whole family, including his children from a previous marriage, and only 'allowed' him to help and spend time with her son and her side of the family. Four years into the relationship, he woke up one morning, packed his stuff and left, no warning, just a realisation of how horrible and isolated his life had become.

Now Michelle has turned his whole support system away. Divide and Conquer is the name of her game. I know it well. Later she will do this to any of his friends, co-workers, maybe a neighbor that says hello to her man. And if they have kids? And divorce? This guy is in for a hell of a ride.

I have a sister-in-law just like that. In 2004 I found my mother crying on the couch. I asked what was wrong and she said that my brother had asked her not to say in front of his wife that my mother loved him because he had arguments about that with his wife at home. I was furious. After the death of our father in 1988, our mother was left alone with 3 teenagers and always remained alone and did everything for us and with us. That a woman can have so much power with breaking words is so unhealthy, a mother's love and partner love is far from the same. My mother died a few weeks after this incident and I have not spoken a word to my brother and his wife since the funeral now 20 years I still see my heartbroken mother on the couch. You can marry 50 men or women but you only have 1 father and 1 mother.

These two are a good pair. The mother should just let them go and get on with her life. They are the ones who will miss out.

I really think Dr Phil was incorrect on this one. The future daughter in law is a narcissist, trying to separate her man from his family. This happened to me one time. I had a super close relationship with my son until he met this woman. I'm a very laid-back kind of person but this woman did everything in her power to get my son to dislike me. Not only me but my daughter as well. It was horrible! As a loving mother I couldn't figure out what I did wrong? I did some research and this is a characteristic in these types of women. When they finally broke up, my relationship with my son was restored as well as his relationship with his sister. This girl has all the traits my son's ex had. I'm only half way into this, and already I'm upset. I'm not saying Mom isn't an angel because she not. This struck s chord with me because my X daughter in law of 6 years still runs my son's life. He'd come over with the two kids in toe, and 3 seconds after getting here she'd call and demand him to come home. I rarely if ever stopped there because she was honestly frightening. The most timid little mouse, but manipulative and an Internet text bully. I found a guitar pic one day that i knew my son would love, and I was so excited to bring it to him. I stopped for less than 4 minutes and in that time she called and said is your mom there? Tell me when she leaves and I'll come home. I tried to tell her we could both both love him, and i was only there to give EVERYONE a small gift, but she wanted no part in it. I know her X, and he told me my son saved him from a life of misery and she admitted to marrying him for money. Which believe me she got. They still wonder why I'm closer to all the other grandchildren. I won't put myself through what this mom is doing. She called me a really bad c word one day through text as always, and I i told her if I was one she was the queen of the club. She still expects him to pay for everything, and myself. I won't engage because my son's so frightened of her that I can't say a word. My two grandchildren are so torn and it kills me. I still continue to say nothing except I love you. I pray someday she gets hers. She's got a home, a brand new car. 800a month in his inheritance payment. He also pays out of pocket every week. She's remarried and he can't have a relationship. She delves into everyone's private lives and will even message anyone he speaks to. I give up at this point. She's a maniac. I'll help pay for things for my grandchildren, but i will never speak to her or give her one minute of my time. Also i was not invited to the wedding. I didn't care. I took all the grandkids home after the ceremony though. Happily for me she got the flu for days afterwards. I was not allowed to dance with my son, say congrats to him or any other thing. But was invited to the births of their children. Who I still don't think are his. Doesn't take anything away from my love for them, but I know how she is. I wish i could show u photos and other messages from other people who know her. Anyway, good luck to this poor dysfunctional family. I understand. Barbie isn't innocent in this either. Sons are meant to be shared. Grandchildren are meant to be shared. If not, don't ask favors or anything else. JMO.

I met my mother-in-law when I was first friends with her daughters and nieces and our friendship blossomed into the most beautiful friendship I never knew existed. My mother-in-law is deceased, but I’ve always known I was loved and that the feelings were mutual. She not only loved me but she loved me enough to want me as a part of her family and future daughter-in-law. Unfortunately, she didn’t live long enough to see us get married but every so often her daughters will ask their brother (my husband) “how’s it feel knowing you married somebody like mom?!” I’m not really like his mom, but she did make a profound impact on my life that my level of respect for her son and entire family is second to none. She was and will always be the best mother-in-law here on earth and in her heavenly home.

My brother married the same kinda girl, we tried to worn him but he wouldn't listen. He stopped seeing us because of her. She texted me from his phone and told me he didn't want to see me anymore... after that I was done with her . 2 years later.. she moved out while he was out of town... bye bye my family was thrilled. My mil was truly awful to me and my children and can still be vile to this day. Recently she told my young adult son that she would probably end her life due to her son not being in her life. Shes a bitter, awful and heartless woman that i have tried for years to fix things with. These women are out there and they get off by hurting people.

When my ex husband and I went excitedly to tell my new mother in law we had got engaged her first words were don't you hurt my son, and she continued along this vein, the wedding wasn't big enough, they couldn't invite 150 guests, intefering etc, so I would never have stopped my husband from seeing his mum but I cut off all communication with her. This is what this young woman needs to do.
