I dumped a gentleman who was talking over me he never wanted to hear what I wanted to say. He was always talking to me when he is highly opinionated and I reflected on our conversations and I was like this is what my father was like with my mother. I put a stop to this when I noticed plenty of red flags.

That she had to constantly manage him showed that he had zero control over what came out of his mouth. The best therapy for him (and really for her sanity too) should be for her to leave him so he no longer gets to berate her, insult, demean or control her. And then perhaps forgive him. He’s sadly missing out on the love and respect he would have were it not for his awfulness. And it frees up her heart to live happily and in peace away from him.

I’m not sure it is narcissism…sorry. I think he has extreme anxiety. There seems to be a real shift in personality from when he & his wife met, to now. I can’t see that John has a sense of humour yet it seems like that was something they shared when they met. I think his defensiveness is because he views everything as criticism . He’s deeply insecure (like a narcissist) but I don’t see the over inflated ego or the lack of sensitivity & compassion. He’s so peculiar & hyper vigilant - it makes me think he’s been traumatised. I felt very sad while watching him, I hope he gets some help & that it works. There’s a few ppl who agree with you so maybe I’ve got it wrong. I come from a family in which chronic anxiety seemed to manifest in every member (mum, dad, all 4 kids, Grandmother, uncles, aunt…family functions could be pretty tense) and it feels more like anxiety…I’ve only been close to a couple of narcissists (and one psychopath) so… not as experienced in that area.

There is no "fixing" a narcissist. You have to admit you have responsibility for the issue and narcissists cannot do that. They are NEVER at fault not even for the words that come out of their mouths. I was married to one for 8 years. It's absolutely hellish.

Totally, it's in their DNA I'm sure of it. Mine was cruel, egotistical, manipulative, entitled, arrogant, vain, the list goes on. They can't be "fixed" you're dead right. In the end I was the one that pulled the pin and I've never looked back.

my ex was as bad, if not worse, than John. I left but don't think my "picker" is working, so I've avoided getting into another relationship. We had 27 years together, though, so I was 53 when we split-now I'm mid-60's and very happy alone. I see my ex in John so much! It's like putting myself back home with him. I don't understand why Dr. Phil doesn't see his narcissism. He gives poor Sally hope that he will change. He won't. I'm so sad for her...

She needs to e-s-c-a-p-e. I escaped but realized I have incredibly poor judgement in partners. It's been almost 40 years...I had 2 serious relationships. They were not good for me. Not as bad as my ex, but not good. I decided alone was where my peace lies..I haven't regretted that once.

Many things can happen that changes the personality. An illness, an accident or any trauma. Sometimes the pressure of keeping up a nice appearance and function on a high level lures into an addiction. Often enough the partner cannot bare the growing burden on the shoulders.
