Can Towing A Tesla Model 3 With A Ford Raptor Recharge It?
The Straight Pipes high mileage Ford Raptor is used to tow the Tesla Model 3 Performance while driving around Toronto Motorsports Park.
Can you recharge a Tesla Model 3 by towing it? That's a great question, and we're going to to use a Ford Raptor to find out. We'll also need to determine how quickly a Tesla can be recharged by towing it, and how far you'd need to travel to fully recharge the battery. The Tesla Model 3 can charge its battery through regenerative braking, where the wheels of the car force the electric motor to spin, which forces a charge into the battery. This is used to slow the car down, and improve its efficiency. However, if you tow the car, you might be able to use that regenerative braking to charge the battery, that is what this video seeks to find out.
On top of this, we'll determine what's more efficient - Option 1: traveling with a Ford Raptor from A to B, or Option 2: Using a Raptor to tow a Tesla, then driving the Tesla from A to B. To do this, we'll need to determine the Tesla's efficiency, the Ford's efficiency, and the Ford's efficiency while towing. Then, using the regen rate of the Tesla, we can find out what the Tesla's true fuel economy is while using a Ford Raptor to tow it. It's a super fun video with a fascinating conclusion; have a watch!

Under ideal conditions like a straight road and no traffic I wonder how far you could get doing this driving at say 30mph. #1: Have one start at 100% and start the second at zero (1% so it would be running) and switch once its at 100%(or until the first car gets to zero) and repeat. #2: start the second off at say 80% and switch when full (or the first hits zero) The idea being that perhaps the battery performs best at a higher charge so there may be some benefit to starting the second car closer to full in order to do more towing while at a higher charge although if such a difference exists it may be so negligible as to be negated just by the extra energy needed to accelerate the car back up to speed each time you switch. Also I’m not sure if the math works out with that idea anyway perhaps it makes no difference whether you do it this way or the first way even if the whole “performance being better at higher charge levels” is actually a thing. #3: regardless of what the second car starts at switch when it reaches say 90% The idea of this being that you wouldn’t want to charge it up to 100% because A: it might not be healthy to keep up that charge rate all the way to 100% B: not sure if the ratio between the rate of discharge from the towing vehicle to the rate of charge in the towed vehicle would become less favorable as you approach 100% C: The car may automatically change the regen. to less aggressive levels as it approaches 100% Anyway determine if any of that stuff (or something else) makes a significant difference and if not just go with scenario #1 ................................................... Another thing I would be curious to know is just how much extra force is needed to tow the Tesla when in max regen. VS just rolling in neutral and then equate the amount of force needed to tow it in max regen. to how many lbs extra the car would have to weigh to get an equivalent effect while in neutral. It must be pretty strong as I recall tfl truck taking the model x on the ike gauntlet towing a trailer at max capacity and on the downhill part of the test they actually had to give it gas to keep up their speed despite being on such a steep grade and having all that weight. (Normally the test is to see how many times they need to apply the brakes to keep it under the speed limit) **there are a ton of caveats and alternatives and possible reasons for and against all of the stuff I said floating around in my head but there isn’t enough room for all of my overthinking in this comment and I’m too lazy to do the research to get a sufficient level of certainty as to what is and is not correct so hopefully someone else already knows lol.

Hello hello! Thanks for joining in, and I hope y’all watch to the end - the conclusions of this one are truly fascinating! We’re gonna save the world with Ford Raptors & Teslas. Big thanks to The Straight Pipes for helping out! Edit: Let's clear up the conclusion. Four reasons why you'll see happen what you see happen at the end. 1) The Model 3 weighs less. 2) The Model 3 has less aero drag. 3) The Model 3 has regenerative braking. 4) While towing, the Raptor will have a lower BSFC - higher efficiency at higher loads, yes it uses more fuel, but more of that fuel turns into useful work (or in this case, battery charge).

This is really false, but also amusing. Yes, your conclusions are false, according to all standard models, since the ratings from Tesla are inaccurate. Just measure the conversion difference, without telling us that you can recharge the tesla, by pulling it with the Raptor, and then pull the Raptor farther, with the same energy. That's not possible with any parameters.

I'm glad you calculated the laps at the end too, because it's quite obvious that in the beginning you could have gone a lot further. You were draining like half the energy just on the main straight. It's kind of insane to actually see how inefficient higher speeds get, like it doesn't feel that different to drive 140kmh than 120, but it's an insane difference in efficiency, and it only gets worse from that point on. But driving 30 like when towing, I guessed you could have gotten a couple of laps, 5.6 sounds about right. Great video all around

@Lawrence330
@Lawrence330 4 роки тому
Regen in inherently efficient, it's a function of synchronous motor design that the motor operation can be reversed to act as a generator. AC motors in general have efficiencies in the mid-upper 90s, and at moderate rates (i.e. not fast charging), charging and discharging a battery are also VERY efficient. Dragging the generator around the track in an inherently inefficient manner, however... Power plants are twice as efficient, even when burning fossil fuels, because they can employ steady-state operation, reheaters, waste heat recovery, and economies of scale. These advantages are lost when scaling the ICE down to "vehicle size."

You might also be seeing more efficiency out of the Raptor engine under load than not under load, adding to the gains seen when towing.
@SeanBZA
@SeanBZA 4 роки тому
@@MrGonzonator The losses are to a first approximation constant, so the heavier the load the more power output, and thus the ratio that these losses contribute per kilowatt are less. IC engines are most efficient at a pretty high RPM, but unfortunately they rarely spend much time in this regime, unless you have a hybrid powertrain or a CVT that tries to keep engine RPM constant, where you can have a lot of design optimisation that makes for a very efficient engine over a narrow range, but abysmal performance out of it. Most common on 2 stroke engines with a tuned exhaust, that has a very narrow power band, with impressive output, but a relatively poor performance outside that spot. If your engine is going to spend all the time either off, or at peak power, it can be very efficient as power source, though hard to use for a variable load like driving, but for power generation exceeding good, provided you always have a near full load on it.
@rjk7104
@rjk7104 4 роки тому
@@MrGonzonator No it's more than that, because engines running at very low load are extremely inefficient. An engine's peak efficiency is always found at high torque and low speed, which is what is happening during the tow. The efficiency difference between low load and high load could be as much as 10% or more.

Correct, it likely makes power more efficiently while towing (though obviously uses more fuel, but a greater percentage of that fuel goes towards useful work).
@Markle2k
@Markle2k 4 роки тому
@@MrGonzonator One of the reasons that diesels are more efficient is that they are unthrottled. By operating the Raptor at closer to open throttle you have less pumping losses. In addition, every IC engine is more efficient at turning fuel into useful work at the point nearest maximum BMEP for that throttle setting which happens right near the torque peak. I'll bet Jason chose 30 km/h carefully to put the Raptor right near the torque peak.

@@superandreanintendo Isn't that similar to going down on a long, steep grade with a fully loaded Tesla?
@markolafslot6439
@markolafslot6439 4 роки тому
I call BS. Like mibars said, it's essentially the same as regen down a long, steep grade. I have driven my Model S up and down several mountain passes and on the way down I have regenerated more than 10% of the battery capacity with absolutely no overheating or any other problems at all. The only concern could be if the battery eventually gets full and you try to regen even more. But even for this case the Tesla protects its battery by gradually reducing the amount of regen power while approaching 100% State of Charge. In case of towing, the Tesla would gradually be pulling less on the tow cable. In case of driving down a mountain the regen would gradually get weaker and eventually you would need to use your mechanical brakes. Also the regen power is less than the power recieved during charging at a SuperCharger. And obviously the battery cooling system is capable of keeping the battery pack reasonably cool. So there is no way you could overheat or damage your battery doing this.
@BassPlayerUnderGrace
@BassPlayerUnderGrace 4 роки тому
I'm no engineer for Tesla so I can't say how they may or may not protect their car batteries but....Tesla themselves say it's bad. Just go into your menu>service>towing and it has a picture and literally says verbatim, "DO NOT transport with any wheels on the ground. This can lead to significant damage and overheating."
@markolafslot6439
@markolafslot6439 4 роки тому
@@BassPlayerUnderGrace It's correct that Tesla is discouraging to tow the vehicle without all 4 wheels are off the ground. The guarantee will not cover any damages. However, I can't see how towing a Tesla as shown in the video could be damaging as long as you take all precautions necessary. Of course, doing like shown in the video, the car should not be in tow mode, but it should be put into Drive, so the car just thinks it is driving normally, but actually being towed. Personally, I would not have any worries towing my Tesla as shown in the video, if it was running low on battery and I couldn't make it to the next charging station. It has been shown many times that it actually works and I have never heard about anyone who damaged the vehicle doing so. Maybe the overheating warning is meant for the other vehicle towing the Tesla? Actually the regen is quite strong, so the other vehicle would have to work quite hard to tow it.

Tow dollys are used with RVs with most automatic transmission cars so as not to damage the transmission. Automatic transmissions typically depend on the engine running to pump ATF for lubrication. Most manual transmission cars can be flat towed without a problem. In ye olden days when rear wheel drive was common place, flat towing automatic cars was more common as well as it was easy enough to just remove the car's drive shaft for a long tow. Assuming you have a car that can be flat towed without causing damage, it is a pretty good way to go as it is cheap and easy to connect and disconnect from the RV.
