What type of supercharger should I use on my car? There are a lot of options for forced induction, whether going the turbocharger or supercharger route. Superchargers typically will offer better throttle response, and can offer better low-end torque, however they ultimately are less efficient than turbochargers. But if you decide to go the supercharger route (great decision by the way), what's the best option? In this video we'll discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the four most common supercharger styles for today's cars: twin-screw, roots, centrifugal, and electric superchargers.

Altitude normalization occurs with turbos, so you get the same boost pressures (with some more lag, but not much) and essentially the turbo RPM is just higher to reach those pressures, because the control mechanism is seeking a given air pressure so the turbo spins faster and you get there. Potentially there could be more wear but I haven't heard of anything to that effect. Altitude normalization turbos are also a feature on some aviation engines.

@flanker6282 Рік тому
As a general rule, a naturally aspirated combustion engine will lose 3% of its power for every 1,000 ft of elevation gain. If you have 100 horsepower at sea level by the time you get to 5,000 feet of elevation your engine is making 85 horsepower. At 10,000 feet of elevation your engine will make 70 horsepower. That happens because because there is less air to feed the internal combustion engine. Turbocharging at elevation is an efficient way to minimize horsepower loss due to elevation and lower air density. At high elevations turbochargers compress more air into the engine cylinders making up for the lower air density allowing the engine to produce power as if it was at sea level. This extra tunability is found only in turbocharged applications.
@Scott11078
@Scott11078 Рік тому
Everytime I get reminded on the decent hit to power engines take up I think back to WW2. In the bigger picture 5,200 feet is nothing, 1 or 2 stage single speed superchargers were good up to about 15-17,000 ft/ 4572-5181.6 meters. The system was just fine if your mission profile didn't dictate needing to get high and fast. This next bit is an awesome little test on reading comprehension and if you're an adult or an oversized child. The Merlin engine wasn't special BUT it's supercharger is what set it apart. The Allison was a great engine and in many ways superior to the Merlins, so much so folks still using Merlins in aircraft and boats use certain parts from the Allison. It's turbo system didn't fit into single engine fighters well at all and is why the P-40, P-39 and early Mustangs weren't liked in Europe since they needed thier power all the way up to 25,000 feet 7620 meters. The reason why the P-47 was as huge as it was is because of its twin turbos and all the ducting. I think there's some interesting history how the quest for power in WW2 aircraft engines gave us the performance in modern cars.

Thanks for the video. I was under the impression that both the roots and twin screw blowers compressed air in the supercharger housing and that the only thing that differentiated them was the shape of the rotors but it looks like this is not the case. When I selected a blower for my Mustang I decided to go with a twin screw design. A case could be made going with a centrifugal blower (smaller, less weight, less costly, more ultimate horsepower) but I opted for a design that would provide more and quicker torque and I'm glad I did. In addition to having far more torque in my normal operating RPM range (2000 - 5000) it performs flawlessly and does not create the hard starting characteristics that some centrifugal blowers are known for.

We had a procharger centrifugal with air to air intercooler on our gmt400 454 vortec. It was a good pairing as it kept pressures low where the torque was already strong and helped it pull hard up top while netting slightly better economy. Not a ton of boost, about 4.5 psi at my elevation, but it also meant I could safely run mid grade instead of premium unless it was hot or while towing. Putting 40+ gallons of premium in kinda sucks. Many years ago, I read in a hot rod magazine about an outfit that had designed an axial flow compressor- like a jet engine compressor section, with rotor and stator blades. They claimed to be able to pump up great pressure without adding frictional heat to the incoming air. It was belt driven, like the Roots and the twin-screw (and centrifugal). The only added heat was from Boyle's Law.

Great video and info. Wish I could have viewed it back when I was a kid, 40 years ago. Centrifugal type superchargers are dynamic devices as opposed to their constant output Positive Displacement counterparts such as the Roots. Centrifugal type simply convert velocity energy into pressure energy via diffusion (learned that way back from Hugh MacInnes). So you speed up the air to very high speeds and then rapidly slow it down and pressure builds (Kinetic energy 1/2mv2). That is why the output is non-linear. For the roots and screw comparison you mentioned, both push the air out. Internal compression that you mentioned? Probably not the right way to look at it. Both gulp and slap the air hard in the lobes/screw which induces heat, difference in adiabatic compression efficiencies.

No Rolls-Royce rotary supercharger, that was used on their diesel rotary, either. Also the 'spiral' supercharger is called a scroll-type supercharger, or G-lader. Also no mention of sliding vane, axial compressor, or pressure wave superchargers. There was also no mention of variable ratio centrifugal superchargers. None of these were mentioned because of how commonly available they are from OEMs and aftermarket companies. Roots, twin screw, and centrifugal are vastly more common than any of the other ones mentioned here. I'm also not really sure why electric was thrown into the video, as that's a drive type, just as exhaust driven and mechanical (belt-, chain-, gear-, and direct-) driven are the other two drive types. A better video for electric to be shown is when comparing supercharging, turbocharging, and electric-charging on the same centrifugal compressor.

Yeah, it's a dilemma. The MX-5 has enough power, just not enough so that it can't benefit from having more. But there are very real downsides to what Jason is doing. It's not cheap, it adds weight on the nose of the car, it puts additional stress on EVERYTHING related to making the car move, and it starts you down a path of 'needing other improvements to cope with the additional power'. So the smart thing to do is leave the car alone, and enjoy it for what it is. But that requires a level of self-discipline that must be beaten into a car enthusiast, over decades of wasting money and ruining perfectly good cars. Ask me how I know...

Thanks for this! Me? I like turbocharging (actually, turbocompounding) a lot better than mechanical or electric supercharging, but that is because I am fixated on efficiency. I just can't stand the thought of all that energy being thrown away, down the exhaust pipe! I would much rather recapture that energy and use it to move the car. I appreciate your openness to all things engineering. :-)

Has there ever been a turbo-compound automotive engine?
@juliojonathan8348
@juliojonathan8348 4 роки тому
Gort The closest thing I can find closest to turbocompounding on automotive application is Garrett e-turbo. They installed a KERS-like mechanism in between the compressor and exhaust side of the turbo to charge a battery, storing energy for spooling the turbo in similar manner to e-superchargers Jason explained. Buuuuut that’s just me googling for about 10 minutes so I could’ve missed a thing or two here.

@@gort8203 The old two stroke Detroit Diesels ran an engine driven blower and exhaust driven turbo charger. The 6-71 blower used on hot rods is the blower off the 6-71 two stroke diesel.
@leslienordman8718
@leslienordman8718 4 роки тому
@@gort8203 Great question! First, before I get to that, I want to define "turbocompounding". The turbocompounding I am speaking of is not a series of turbochargers, each pressurizing intake air and handing it off to the next. Turbocompounding is using the energy in the exhaust gasses to not only pressurize the intake air, but to also provide more power to the engine. Either the power turbine or a second turbine is connected to the crankshaft. The Wright Cyclone R3350 radial aircraft engine used turbocompounding to make way more horsepower than just with turbocharging alone. My father worked on R3350 engines for the airlines: the turbocompounding system was simple and very reliable. It was just a set of three turbines that were spun by the exhaust gasses and were geared to the crankshaft. Now, as far as I know, turbocompounding has been successfully used in aircraft and in over-the-road trucks, but not in cars.

Search for "Coltrane's Planes & Automobiles: The Supercharger" The famous Scottish comedian did a series on engines and that one talks of the origin of the supercharger. Interesting was the Germans had a clutch that engaged the supercharger when the driver demanded it compared to the Brits having it always connected. Obviously, this came out of car racing and into fighter planes...
