Kind of like the Minnesota Twins in baseball. All their major career pitching records are held by Walter Johnson, who died 15 years before the Twins ever existed. He set them with the franchise when they were the Washington Senators. In baseball it’s complicated by the fact that the current Washington team plays in the NL while Johnson’s entire career was in the AL. With the extra complication that the current Washington team has all the Montreal Expos’ records.

When the WHA was absorbed into the NHL, the existing NHL teams wanted to reclaim, from the incoming WHA teams, players whose rights they owned from earlier entry drafts. The compromise they made was that each WHA team could protect 4 players (I think) and then the NHL could reclaim from the players left, and for each player they claimed they had to remove one player from their own protected list for the “expansion” draft to stock the incoming ex-WHA teams. A couple of examples: Dave Langevin played for Edmonton in the WHA. The Islanders had drafted him the same year they picked Gillies & Trottier and wanted him back, so they reclaimed him and exposed Pat Price, who went to Edmonton. Through all the rigamarole it was basically a trade: Price for Langevin. Similarly, they had drafted Richard Brodeur in their very first draft in 1972. Brodeur played his whole career with Quebec in the WHA, but the Islanders reclaimed him, 8 years after he had been drafted, and exposed Gerry Hart, who ended up on the Nordiques. Brodeur was quickly dealt to Vancouver, but the Langevin move was big because that made Dave Lewis available later on for the Butch Goring trade and both Langevin & Goring were key contributors to the Islanders dynasty. In the NFL/AFL and NBA/ABA mergers, the teams just came into the merged leagues as they were, with all their players. Nice & simple. Of course the NHL can never do anything the easy, sensible way. They always have to come up with a clever scheme.

Very sorry to hear about Demko’s injury. I was pulling for the Canucks this year. Sadly, knee injuries don’t get better under the strain of play, they usually get worse. Also, even if Demko plays he’s not going to have his full mobility. Losing its star goalie, or having his play diminished by injury, with no good backup to take their place is the worst thing that can happen to a team in the playoffs.

From what I've heard earlier, it was confirmed that if the Coyotes are reactivated, it will be an expansion draft. I think your comparison to the Toronto situation is on point; it sounds like Bettman was stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to pulling the players out of Arizona, because the owner was completely uncooperative with selling the team. Sounds like this was the terms the owner gave in order for Bettman to all the players out of that sinking ship. At least on the good news side, because of his financial misdeeds and not paying bills, I highly doubt the owner will be able to have the credit rating to fund a new stadium, so in 5 years, I suspect the league will be returning to Arizona with a new owner.

This situation with the Coyotes history is very similar to what the NFL did with the Browns. When the Browns rejoined the league as an expansion team in 1999, they carried over the history from the franchise that became the Ravens, and what was the Ravens became retroactively thought of as an expansion team. I assume if the Meruelo group rejoins the league they'll carry over the Coyotes history, if not it'll stay with Utah

People keep bringing up the Cleveland Browns, but that was a completely different situation. The same owner still had the team rather than selling it. It actually makes sense, if you think about it. Meruelo still has the "Coyotes" franchise. This franchise has been rendered inactive due to circumstances (arena issue). As a result, the roster has been "sold" to Utah. If it helps, think of it as $1bn for an expansion team plus $200m for the Coyotes roster. If Meruelo actually follows through, he can trigger an expansion draft (Vegas etc rules). He has until 31 December 2027 to do so, and has to have met a certain benchmark. I know, I know... it's convoluted. But this is how I understand everything I've heard and read thus far.

A few videos ago, you described the forced sale of the Coyotes as “laundering a franchise” and that seems the best description of this stupidity. How Maruelo can “hold the history” when the franchise has been stood down, he’s been paid a billion dollars for the team to bugger off to Salt Lake City beggars belief. Hopefully Daly and the NHL sees this video and realise that leaving the history of the team in the hands of a person who was paid a hell of a lot of wampum to not operate a franchise in Arizona is completely daft at best. If the NHL weren’t such a joke, Maruelo would have been completely shown the door once the billion dollars hit his accounts. Now, if he does manage to build the new arena in spite of all the opposition, then I could see a process by which he has the first shot at an Arizona expansion team but this limbo is just plain weird. At least the Canes brought their history from Hartford with them. The irony was that given how acrimonious the divorce from Connecticut was (so much so that Karmanos paid an extra $20M+ penalty to play two years at the Greensboro Coliseum 90 minutes west of Raleigh), Karmanos absolutely refused to have anything to do with that Whalers history whatsoever. Thankfully we had legendary broadcasters John Forslund and Chuck Kaiton who would slip in Whalers factoids into the broadcasts every chance they could. In fact, here’s Chuck and the Letter K’s call in the final moments of Game 7 in 2006: “9,393 days of frustration, and on the 9,394th day of NHL existence, the Carolina Hurricanes-the Whaler organization 'til '97-have won the Stanley Cup!”

Arizona is still a franchise in good standing with the league; inactive until they have an arena. They essentially have traded the entire current roster for Utah's expansion draft rights for when they reactivate. Utah is an expansion team, and nothing has changed with Arizona except for them being inactive for up to five years. This is not actually that complicated. The Quebec Bulldogs did the temporarily inactive franchise thing in the 1910s, so there is some precedent.

It's really not hard to grasp. They have no legal right to force him to do a damn thing. The NHL and PA don't want to play for years in a college arena, with the black eye on the league and the revenue hit. But they don't have any right to force him to do anything- so if the NHL wants to act, he has all the leverage and gets to name his terms. That's it. He's the owner. The NHL has a lot of power to pick and choose owners when the team is up for sale, but once sold, the owner is the owner and they have near absolute power to do what they want with their franchise. If the NHL wants something different, then it has to be negotiated, and the owner has the absolute right to say no.

Yes Arizona is keeping the teams history. I really like this as a Sens fan because first of all, it’s less confusion and second of all history should stay with the city or state and not move to the next place with the team

The reason the records are staying with Meruelo is because Utah is technically an expansion team that is just buying the Hockey Ops department of the Coyotes. So everything that isn't the players or staff stay with the Coyotes.

The NHL with team history in a nutshell, Toronto is Toronto, but not the NHA Toronto, but every other NHL team that was an NHA team that are now NHL franchises. And Winnipeg is now the Arizona, whose players are in Utah. Atlanta is now Winnipeg, and Calgary. The Seals became Barrons who then merged with the North Stars but spun off players to be the San Jose Sharks, then the North Stars became the Dallas Stars. Anyone else follow all of that?😅
@rsmirlock2006
@rsmirlock2006 9 днів тому
Here's why I think they had to treat Utah as a "new" team. Part of this deal was that the name "Arizona Coyotes" gets to stay with the Arizona ownership group. So if you were to let the history and records go to Utah, it would be really confusing for the "Version 1" Coyotes history be in Utah and the "Version 2" Coyotes history been in Arizona". The NHL announced that Utah was granted an expansion, and Utah was buying everything from Arizona. The Arizona franchise is "suspended", but still exists on paper. If the arena in Arizona doesn't get built, then I suppose the Winnipeg/Phoenix/Arizona franchise just ends there. It's happened in the NHL many times before - just not recently. The last two franchises to disappear were the Montreal Maroons and the Brooklyn Americans in the 1940s (leaving the "original six" teams remaining). As for where new players would come from for the "new" Arizona Coyotes, I assume they would have a "replenishment draft." It works just like an expansion draft - just a different name. Replenishment draft plans are built into most major sports leagues in case a franchise suddenly loses a majority of its players....such as with a natural disaster or plane crash. YES, they DO think of these things!

What happened to the California Seals team? Where'd they relocate to?
@rsmirlock2006
@rsmirlock2006 9 днів тому
@ThomB1031 They became the Cleveland Barons for a short time, then merged with the Minnesota North Stars in 1978 ( who are now in Dallas). So technically, Dallas owns the rights to those records, though they are not used anywhere. If you want to count them as the last "dead franchise," so be it.

@@rsmirlock2006 Or does the Sharks own that history? I mean Sharks were this unique case where there was expansion draft. And dispersal draft where Gund sort of removed and took back his California team from Minnesota. So to have any consistency Gund should have owned the Barons/Seals history. Hoping THG makes a video of this because this is one of my favourite subjects.

It's actually surprisingly similar to Hamilton Tigers/New York Americans situation 99 years ago. Except that the Hamilton players were suspended for wanting more money, which somehow also killed the franchise, but then the next season, the entire roster was imported wholesale to the expansion[?] New York team and given more money. Then the Americans went on to suspend operations in 1942 because money/war, but were supposedly promised they could be reactivated after the war was over and players returned from oversees. Turned out the NHL lied and the dormant franchise was officially withdrawn in 1946. Seems to cover all the bases, just mixing up the order of operations this time. Although that Cleveland Barons + Minnesota North Stars = San Jose Sharks thing is another weird one. Wonder if there was an argument that the Seals/Barons history should have followed the Gund bros. back to the bay area.
@derapalum6692
@derapalum6692 9 днів тому
Yeah there are similarities in Tigers to Americans. But I believe the case was that Americans were expansion team and they bought the players of Hamilton Tigers when Tigers were taken by "governing body". There was atleast stories that the Tigers manager Percy Thompson was assured a team to NHL if he would find financial backing. Team to be bought from Saskatoon was rumoured. And in many newspapers Hamilton was counted as eight team to participate to 25-26. But Hamilton never returned. So "I guess similar" than Utah now. It is and isn´t relocation? This is all confusing.
@RRaquello
@RRaquello 9 днів тому
The Americans’ post war revival was squashed by the Rangers/MSG. The NHL was controlled by the Norris family, who owned or had interests in the 4 American based NHL franchises. They outright owned the Red Wings, owned the Rangers by owning MSG and owned the Boston Gardens and a Chicago Stadium. They were also tied in to organized crime because by owning the big arenas, they basically ran big time boxing, hand-in-hand with the Mafia. There is a book to be written about this and I wonder why nobody has done it.

Demko at 85% is better than his backups, but if you look at Ville Husso rushing back a goaltender can exacerbate a problem. I'd rather gamble on not having him for the series than risk making the injury worse. Doesn't help to make it out of this round if you cripple your goalie going forward.

Yes, leaving the team history, logo and colors was done previously by the NFL Cleveland Franchise when they moved and became a new NFL Franchise in Baltimore. Sports leagues need to add relocation language in their bi-laws and enforce it as league rules.

Ruff's past success, at least in Buffalo, he would admit, had a lot to do with the 2 all-world goalies he had in Hasek and Miller. He may have struck gold again, by walking into a dream situation in Buffalo, with the emergence of UPL, and the potential of Devon Levi. Ruff may ultimately be thanking the Devil's fans for encouraging his ticket out of NJ...

The Arizona situation now parallels the Cleveland Browns situation in the 80's, instead of the owner picking up the franchise and U-Hauling them to Baltimore, Gary Bettman is hauling the franchise to Utah. Art Modell didn't get to keep the Browns name and Bettman and the BoG don't retain the Coyotes name. In a weird way it kind of makes sense and I wouldn't be surprised if the Browns were cited as a precedent.

I agree that the history should go with the team, though there are some cases of this happening in other leagues. In the NFL when the Cleveland Browns left for baltimore when they got an expansion team they got to keep the brown's history, and i'm pretty sure somethin similar happened in MLS with the San Jose Earthquakes. Plus Utah ownership definitely seems like they wanted expansion and this kind of just fell in their lap so i dont think they mind starting fresh. Realistically though yeah it makes more sense to consider the history to move with the team but it not officially makes for a fun "did you know" talking point when brought up at least.
@Shuffledhearts

the Coyotes history going (or not) to Utah has precedent with the Hamilton Tigers moving to NY to become the NY Americans. It is pretty much the same situation. The Americans owner bought the players and the team but not the franchise and the Americans technically have no historical connection with the Hamilton Tigers.
