My Varia 515 dropping every km is fixed. Of course supposed the last Varia firmware fixed it, but actually made it way way worse. Things are all back to normal for me, except peloton mode doesn't seem to work nearly as well. In that usual Garmin way, I'm so happy that I don't have 3000 radar disconnect messages per ride that I'm happy.

Hi Shane, I think the Max HR thing is at the end of a ride where it informs you if there is a change to your max HR. The same comes through on Fenix 7. I'm guessing that in times where people haven't actually hit the high rates they wonder how it was able to update them. So I'm guessing at that point it tells you if it actually detected your HR at 201 or whether it calculated it off your observed performance.

Nice work gplama. I wonder if anyone else who uses Routecourse for managing and downloading their routes has had a problem since the upgrade? I only just got a 1040 so have only tried it with 20.19 but apparently it's been working with the previous firmware. Could be a problem for 540 / 840 too, of course.

I hope they fixed the navigation turning advice hang or crash I had since 19.22. Since then the navigation turning advice popup stayed there completely frozen. No meters counting down moving towards the curve, no movement of my position on the map nor map rotation. The popup even stayed after I passed the curve and did never go away by its own. I had to switch to the next page and back again to get rid of it. This happened on every single turning advice.

Using a 1040 Solar (version 20.19). My sensors seem to disconnect after resuming my ride (from sleep) they usually come back on its own but will usually after 15 minutes of riding.

Hello, First of all, congratulations on these great videos. I have a question about navigation on the Garmin Edge 1040: when I import a track, during navigation I only see the track and not the other routes in map mode... Is there an option to tick to see everything? Thanks in advance.

You can make multiple courses to show on the screen but you have to select each route individually and set it to display on screen.

Hi Lama thks for this update. Yesterday 100k ride but noticed some problems I think from the dashboard app with this new update(1040 solar), so I removed it today. And I need to figure out how to solve the overlay problem I have with gps/speed data not showing up in the videos footage from the radar RCT715. I use the 1040 solar with this RCT715. I searched the Garmin forum and I am not the only one, as I did a reply to the problem someone told me that the Varia app is the problem not the radar. Quistion for you is did you experience this yourself ❓not related to this garmin update. Have a great day.

There was an update to the Varia Mobile App yesterday. I'd make sure you're on that latest version - unpair and re-pair the RCT715 to the app - also delete the pairing from your Edge and add it back - and see how that goes.

If you plug your Varia in Garmin express ( I assume you have the common RTL515 model ) There is a firmware update that fixes the disconnect issues.

@@gabrielcarriere I’ve tried that, I even picked up another varia as a spare, and both do it. I switch from my 530 and 1040 and both disconnect, although the 1040 is the worst, always seems to happen on the second half my ride more.

Anyone else having issues with wrong elevation readings after updating (1040 Solar) all my rides after march 15 have messed up altitudes. Complete nonsense. Also, cadence and HR sensor keep beeping connecting and disconnecting mid ride. No idea how to troubleshoot this.

How many % of the promised max battery time is there on this Garmin Edge series ? I have a Garmin Edge 130 and have got the unit replaced 3 times because the battery is only lasting between 25 minutes to 3 hours depends on temperature. Now says Garmin Sweden that its no problem with battery, the last new unit last 2:40 hours in 5 degree C temperature and garmin tested it to 12 hours !! I hope for some comments and advice from other users before i buy a 540, 840 or 1040 model, maybe those models also only last 10-20% of the promised battery time ?

The 1030+ was abandoned too quickly. It should have at least received the x40 UI update and ClimbPro Free ride. I guess they have to draw a line in the sand somewhere. The 1030+ is still AU$1000 here..... that makes me uncomfortable.

@@gplama aside from multiband they'd be the same device then, solar notwithstanding. x40 series being quicker is solely software, they use the same processor. unfortunately as competition is so lacking they can nearly double price for a software refresh and multiband GPS chip.

Hey, I'm fairly new to my Edge 840 and when following a route a pop-up appears at intersections. This guidance is different form my map page and has 2 fields at the bottom (direction and time to intersection). I wonder how I can change this pop-up to display more useful stuff or have a larger view of the map. Anyone suggestions, couldn't find anything relating in settings..

There's no easy or quick answer on that one. Garmin have a LOT more functionality for data geeks. Wahoo has the upperhand when it comes to simplicity of the core functions most people want.

They STILL haven't fixed Strava segment nag popups when you've already tapped, tapped stop segment, then yes. It just ignores it and pops up again infinitely until the segment has actually started. It's been there for years and years in both x30 and x40 (and I think x20 series?), with everybody crying for it to be fixed ... and they still don't / won't. 20.19 also seems to be a backwards step relative to some of the earlier betas for this release, which definitively fixed sensor dropouts on both x30 and x40 series - now if you start a ride from your unit having been in sleep mode it sometimes happens again. Doesn't happen at all if you start a workout having just turned it on from an off state.

I've been fighting with sensors dropping mid-activity on my 1040 S. This is generally a non-issue, you just see a window pop up saying shifter disconnect ... and it connects again in a second. But when you're in a workout and your power sensor drops, that's very frustrating. I don't see anything in your video that addresses this issue, but I find a lot of thread on the topic in the Garmin forums (without solution). Let me know if you've got any work-around or other tips for dealing with this annoying issue. Thanks!

Shane, I recently upgraded from a 705 Edge to the 1040 Edge. I utilize a PowerTap hub. My issue is that calories burned is simply calculated from my HR and zero work from the hub is calculated. Switching bikes it still is the same. I have courses ridden on the 705 that show 3 times the calorie burn that the 1040 shows. I rode up Alpe D Heuz indoors where it was obvious no work was included. Ironically, I manually synced 3 rides (had a start stop snafu). And it autocalulated the calories with what appeared to be a correct number. Could you tell me from that description if I have a setting wrong or if it is a Garmin hiccup. This is occurring indoors and outdoors. Thanks in advance, Bill

after i put the 830 to sleep while waiting for mates to show up, I thought the radar was supposed to automatically just connect again when I start a ride. Is there a setting for that ? Been having that issue for a while

Radar pairing can be a pain in the arse. It needs to pair as both an ANT+ Radar and ANT+ Light to work properly in that situation (iirc). A lot of the time it'll lose the ANT+ Light connection and work as a radar normally... with no light/system control. I'd delete the sensor and re-pair it using the long-hold power on process to put the radar in pairing mode... then pair it again to the 830.

Since upgrading the software on my 1040 Edge I now find on my Fenix 6 Pro that when I go to "Last Activity" and press on it to see the details of my ride it no longer works. On numerous occasions I have been in touch with Garmin and essentially ignored. In fact, my experience so far in alerting Garmin to this issue is it's no straight-forward process. Hi Shane, when I end and save a ride on my 1040 it fails to auto upload despite being connected to my phone and/or Wi-Fi. It won’t upload until I open the Garmin Connect app however my old 1000 uploads find over my phone or Wi-Fi without it being open. Any ideas as Garmin say it’s not supposed to upload on either without the app being open but several friends say it works for them too but none have the 1040 or others in this generation. Thanks

Hi, I don't think the 1030+ will brick without FW updates only if there is a map update which has nothing to do with the FW update. If it records routes and telemetry today, it will in 5 years as well. For example, I use the new 2023 maps on the Oregon 650, from 2014. On the bike, I use the 1030+ for maps only and at the same time the 1040 for telemetry, where I scroll through the screens with buttons from the handlebar drops. I don't see any difference in the accuracy of track storage or external sensor records. 1030+ only lacks the manual calibration of the altimeter, unfortunately. Keep calm :-) @@gonzodetailing2703

garmin 540 crashes on a longer rides now with this update applied. I've seen it on 3 rides already - seems like a conflict of "ClimbPro" detection and "Strava Segment start". Device just goes black for a 10-15 second and reboots itself. waiting for the next firmware update to fix this one, I guess :)

@@gplama another glitch is when climb profile detected (ClimbPro, not a segment) - it wouldn't go away from the map view and just sticks there obscuring the navigation view (map behaves like there's still full-screen for navigation, when in fact, 30-40% of the screen is blocked by that climb profile just sitting there). clicking though screens helps though. overall, seems like they've rolled out features tested on the bigger screens (840, 1040) and didn't test it well on a smaller ones.

Same here. I wanted to get the Edge 840 (Solar) when it was brand new, but I was probably hoping for more significant improvements over the x30 series especially given its (initial) price tag. I hope the 530 will hold up fine enough till the release of 850, which I'm expecting to be, given how long we were waiting for the x40s, in like 2032.

Every time I watch a x40 series update video I weep and then get angry over Garmin's early abandonment of updates for the 1030+. These devices are INCREDIBLY EXPENSIVE so shame on Garmin for their short sighted money grab. One thing is for sure, whenever I do buy my next cycling computer, near the top of my list of desired features will be the length of time the manufacturer supports their products with updates. P.S. What's really crazy is Garmin still sells the 1030+ on their website at its original full price. Yet is doesn't come with their latest operating system. 🤦

I have an Edge 840. I also have a Dexcom G7 constant glucose monitor that is paired to my 840. Over the past several weeks I cannot get a BG reading on my 840. All the display shows is a “blob.” I contacted Garmin, they know about the issue, but don’t know when it will be fixed. Does anyone know about this issue and when it will be fixed?

Garmin, I spent close to CAD$1000 on my 1030+. Why am I not getting all the updates ? Can you at least do a trade in program so I updates to a series you’re investing in, or we’re being just left out? For price paid, I expected updates like the rest. Disappointed ☹️.

@@gplama I received 20.18 on my EE2 yesterday. Today was my first ride and after a water stop, my speed sensor was stuck on 7.0 kph and would not budge. Stopped the ride and saved it, started a new one - same issues; turned it on/off - same issue; disconnected the sensor and it was fine using GPS. I never had speed sensor issues before in one year of rides. Further, no matter how many times I fix the navigation settings, it will not recalculate a new route if off route. As much I love Garmin hardware (my 830 was a tank until the micro-USB port died last week), their software is abysmal. It's like Windows 3.1 and they just keep building new features on the pig that is the backbone. It needs a complete refresh. Too many software bugs for $400-800 devices.

The whole x30 series (including the 1030 Plus) hasn't seen much action since the x40 series launched.

Garmin fix some issues and then destroy everything with the next update. I’m on beta 21 now and it’s worse than 20.

Why don’t garmin just incorporate all this into an IOS app. the hardware is redundant let’s face it. we all have better screens and sensors built into our phones. and we all carry them with us out on rides anyway. sell the app for 1/3 the price of a new head unit.

There’s a lot of reasons for this. One being that Garmin can’t sell a $500+ app. They can sell $500+ head units.

@@richiejames928 And reduce again when they have to start supporting a wider range of hardware they have no control over. What they're doing at the moment is rooted in legacy, sure. I am just thankful their cycling computers aren't a total mess like their watch range. I wonder when they'll switch to a subscription model for their services...

@@gplama I wonder what’s propping up what at this point? do the wearables fund the bike computers or vice versa? realistically it’s a very basic app to port to apple/android. maybe people have more of an issue paying £100+ for an app and no hardware. most people don’t want to pay 99p for an app these days.

Because crashing and destroying a pricey phone who's not built for crash protection isn't worth (especially if you do MTB or road racing). Battery life is another and size along with sensor and connectivity support, you'll need an ANT+ stick and drivers (for android, not sure for ios) if you wanna use your phone since most bike electronics use ANT+. Also, if you do use your phone for a bike mount, do note that you'll need some semblance of vibration dampening to your mount else the vibration while riding will mess with your camera's focus lens and sensors, it's a pretty known issue for motorcyclists using quadlock without the vibration dampener acessory.

Hi Shane, I’ve edited my startup.txt to display my name and phone number, however, it doesn’t display on startup? I have an Edge 1040 solar

Best I can suggest is to double check the file actually saved on the unit. Then follow all the steps in my startup.txt video. Then ensure you're on 20.19. If all else fails, it'll be one for Garmin support.
