I've been using WIndfield for several years now. I've found its accuracy to be somewhat spotty here in Poland, but even so it is generally accurate as to the overall wind direction and speed - at least where I live. I cannot explain it, but I have become so used to it that I simply cannot imagine my riding without it. Much like you I tend to check the weather and plot my ride accordingly, but winds sometimes shift and behave unexpectedly and this little field has kept me abreast of any such changes, which is useful if you get caught out some ways from home. I do recommend it, especially if doing long rides over many hours is your thing.

If you commute the same routes regularly and you know where all the segments are, it's great for those moments where there's a huge arrow pointing the same direction you're riding (arrow changes size with wind speed), to put the boot in that little harder for a top 10 or q/kom. In summer having UV index and temperature (from the internal thermometer) is great here in Perth to remind me to get out of the sun, as it's often difficult to gauge if the rays are getting a little bitey when sweaty and an early sea breeze kicks in.

I’ve been using WF for over two years and have always loved it. I use a full width view on my 1030 so I can see all my secondary data values such as humidity, UV, index, feels like temperature, last weather update, and wind gusts. Several in our club have the Pro version. We still have to tell some paceline leaders to move left or right so we can get the best draft. So, not all experienced riders are aware of wind direction. I have my WF data linked to Strava so I get a summary of the weather conditions for completed rides. It’s well worth $12 a year for the Pro version.

People used to tell me that electronic shifting was completely unnecessary, waste of money. I agreed until I tried now, now it's always on all of my bikes. People used to tell me I don't need radar on my bike. I tried it, now I don't leave home without it. Then people told me I didn't need to see what gear I'm on my computer display. I through the same until I tried it, now it's always on my main page. I'm pretty sure I could live without a wind direction display, and based on my personal history, I'd probably put it, and leave it on my main page... except for one thing. I'm a Wahoo user and don't plan on changing :)

I'm a big fan of WindField (pun only kinda intentional). I frequently ride long gravel events, on courses I many not know well, and these events are long days. So the data field helps me a ton to know if I'm about to hit a headwind at the next turn, for example. Also wind conditions change throughout the day and may not match the forecast, so real time updates are great. OTOH there are a good number of gravel event is areas without cell coverage, and then it's not as helpful. It's also great if your out hunting Strava segments to know that you can use a little wind-doping to score that KOM 😁

I have been using this field on my Edge 1040 for one year now and currently am a PRO subscriber. For the most part, the field is a nice-to-have, but the accuracy of the field depends on where and how old the source data is in relation to your route/time of ride. I have experienced occasional moderate discrepancies between its information and the actual speed/direction (wind directions off by 90-180 degrees from reported).

My mistake if I confused anyone. The more you do ride, the more stations I can map out in your area. Theoretically that makes it more accurate but maybe there are not many stations in your area. Or they have low quality data. Geography plays a huge role as well if the station is on the other side of a ridge. Cheers!

yes, it would just keep it from the last time it connected. so you could start it, get the windspeed/direction, then leave your phone in the car. arrow would still move as you rode showing that last reported wind direction. accuracy will suffer obviously if the wind changes, but you'll have something at least. same as if you rode out of phone service, which often happens to me here in colorado in the mountains

Comparing the multitude of Swiss/French flags fluttering in the wind along the route with what my 1040 was telling me was laughable in it's randomness. Now this is a route without a lot of corners. It is a big lake you cycle around (170km). Windfield was like a broken watch- correct twice a day. Am I doing something wrong? Is it simply no good in Europe? No idea. I'll keep fettling with it.

@@enki42ea great question. i've done multiple tests on various garmin devices have never seen any battery impact from my apps (running several at once). as for the phone, also negligible both with an iphone x and iphone 14. it only tries once every 5 mins regardless if you have service or not (no way to tell from the app side) so it's probably a lot less intensive than apps like facebook or twitter are already doing in the background.

I use EpicRideWeather before rides, and this does more or less the same, though not “live”, and often the predicted wind conditions are globally correct, but locally inaccurate, as a weather forecast model can’t take into account ultra local features such as small hills etc that do have a large impact on local winds.
