Thoughts for that Eberlestock chest rig with the straps messing with the lid: maybe try unclipping the two front straps, run them down through those almost MOLLE esque loops on the rear of the bag and then have them come up and clip into the harness? would pull them farther from your handgun and the top closure (hopefully)

Thanks for allowing my wife and me the opportunity to camp vicariously. With my age now further complicating a childhood incomplete spinal cord injury, the closest we get to camping is sitting on our tin and tar roofed patio and listening to the rainfall. It sounds like it's hitting the roof of our long gone pop up camper.

I'd set up a tent, UNDER the tarp! I love camping in horrible weather. My most wonderful memories is with my buddy, Dave. We camped, rode motorcycles, and adventured all the way to Chile, S.A. We've been caught many times in terrible weather, and every time, it was so much fun. Your worst days camping are the best memories you'll ever have. "What does not kill us, only makes us stronger". I like to go out onto the carport and watch when it rains. I love the sound of the rain and the smell of the ozone. Everything smells fresh. My husband and I had to go tie down our boat cover in one hurricane. The boat is on the carport. The wind blew the rain in under the carport and all the way across it and it was invigoration, though we got soaked to the skin. We live in Southwest Louisiana. I forget which storm it was. after awhile, they all blend together in my mind. The bungee cords were old and broke in the wind, we didn't lose the cover over the boat because I saw that the old ones were, well, OLD. I'm surprised we found the new ones we had bought and hadn't put on yet.

I think that chest pack is meant to be worn higher on the chest. Straps would become more horizontal and less vertical, helping the magnetic lid situation

@@TheOutdoorGearReview Could you undo the 2 straps from their clips, then string those straps underneath the little horizontal straps about 2 inches below, then back through the clips? Thank you, Luke, for sharing even the simplest of your adventures, like hiking in the rain. I love it when it storms here so I can step out into my backyard hobo camp, a tarp set up in the wooded area covering a hammock, two camp chairs, a cooler, a fire pit and even a loo. I love lying in the hammock and listen to the rain pelting the tarp. As a caregiver I can't go too far from home. I had a similar experience with an expensive Emerson chest pack I made into a survival kit as it lacked in adequate inner space and pockets sufficient to hold items neatly; they ended up in a pile at the bottom of the pouch. I found an inexpensive Wynex black pouch and it is a superb piece of kit, comfortable chest wear and had sufficient pockets to store items in a very neat and organized fashion. Surprisingly, it has held up to the usual abuse I put gear through. My Ruger sits neatly next to a small pair of binoculars and those items that don't have a pocket or slot I affixed velcro to them and they remain on a velcro panel.

Simple Gear for a simple set up. Congrats, most people believe you need to spend thousands of dollars to get outdoors. Australian used Hexamine stoves for years until they adopted the MRE's in recent decades. Any rations can be saved by adding sauces & Tabasco sauce can save a meal but the self heating meals are brilliant as a way to get a hot meal in a hurry. G'day from Sydney, Australia.

Spent 200 nights a year in a sleeping bag 1990-1994. Worked for trouble teen wilderness camp. I ended up being a HUGE fan of "tarping". Preferred a used rainfly off a Eureka Timberline2. Two hiking poles holding the peak, and guying it down . Surprised you have kept tarp so high. Advantage with hike poles, I could lower as wind got more intense or changed direction. Lots of memorable moments, including a night with my co worker digging trenches in the Big Bend torrential hurricane downpours. ...with my SPOON!!

"Leslie, this doesn't taste like a**" That's when I decided to take a sip of my adult beverage......and put my hand over my mouth to keep from spitting it all over the screen of my iMac. This proves, again, that timing is everything. I live in an area that has carried my family name and history for most of the existence of the town. Family property is precious, and heirloom in my eyes. My grandfather was a farmer, and the farm is now a hospital because I couldn't win the lottery (lol) and buy it from my mom and her siblings. I still see the farm in my head when I pass it by, and it hurts my heart. Enough of my lamentations. Ditch the chest rig. It looks like a poor design. I love rain hikes, and night hikes, and especially rainy night hikes lol. My friend and I went for a walk on a flat trail just on the edge of town once because it was rainy. I still had an umbrella but I was holding it sideways to the wilderness because the mountain lions hunt at night, that's the only part that gets a little iffy. And holding a large or tall object like umbrella makes them less likely to stalk you. If I'm up in the forest though, I don't even worry, we only have black bears and they won't bother hikers unless you spook them, unlike mountain lions who will hunt anything.
