Institutions grow old like people. Basically the systems we once relied upon no longer works, or make sense. The world has changed too much. Now instead of addressing our issues for real lasting change which would require making sacrifices today. Politicians instead choose to kick the can down the road because they don't want to be be blamed for letting things get bad. The problem is the more can kicking we do the worst the problem gets and once things come crashing down it will be a lot harder. Basically things will reach crisis point before they can seriously get better. Also this cycle isn't new. In the English speaking world there is a crisis roughly every 80 years the dramatically changes society, changes the ruling elites and sets on our path going forward. The last one was World War II when the college educated managers took over. Before that the American Civil War when the industrialist businessmen took over. Before that the American Revolution and the plantation owners. Before that the English Civil War brought the coastal merchants in charge and so on and so on.

Nah, the "not loving your children" thing doesn't make sense and is a spurious conclusion. It's way more complicated than that, and is a combination of many factors. It would also be interesting to determine whether Eric's lifestyle, possessions, creature comforts, etc reflect the kind of person who "loves their children;" if it does, I'd expect that his life and daily routine would be radically different than that of the average person.

Actually, with Sam Harris, it's a matter of being intelligent without being smart. To me, smartness has an element of wisdom - or at least experience - in it. Academics like Sam Harris have very little worldly or practical experience. They live inside intelligencia bubbles. Eric Weinstein is also a form of intelligencia - ie not overflowing with practical experience - but he doesn't live inside the normal bubbles, and that at least allows him to see bullshit when it is served on a platter for dinner. To be smart, one needs knowledge, experience and high intelligence to process the data. One also needs to not be inhibited by cultural/ideological impedance. Without experience, intelligence has serious limitations.

I don’t get it either. What does selling your assets in your 70s or 80s have to do with loving (or not loving) your children?

What it means is in days gone by a parent would be consoled if in old age they could leave their children better off through leaving them assets. What he is saying is that many are just saying "stuff the kids" I want my 3 holidays a year and new car every 3 even in retirement. The only way to do this is to slowly liquidate the potential inheritance of their children. It's basically the boomer me generation taken to its logical conclusion. The "oh well the kids will be fine anyway!....I mean I was, with my free education, full employment, low cost housing and rising stock market!" That is the point he is making.

Breit Weinstein is a fake intellectual, he will never write any paper about any of his theories because he has nothing to offer but vapid words, physicians of all walk of life and real scientists have called out his BS, he never did anything, and will never adress real criticism about his theories that absolutely not work, and he has no paper about it, he is thin air and love to hear himself talk, nothing more.

My assessment isn't perfectly in parallel with Sam on this, but I found parts of Eric's narrative quite dubious and a little too confident and convenient for self and tribe. To some degree .... there's evidence another phenomenon is going on in parallel, and might even be a greater driver: Many smart overconfident people with heterodox beliefs that are mostly mistaken, but sometimes, somewhat correct get activated and triggered when the suppression of dissent or contrarianism gets aggregious enough. And because we've got alternative media ecosystems that allow them widespread dissemination of their perspectives and the ability to gather supportive audiences... they proliferate and become even more unchecked. You don't need a superstructure for this to emerge, and the suppression, the genuine careful discrediting and sloppy manipulative prebunking are present simultaneously.... because human society is complex and chaotic. Of course... we all prefer something more comprehensive. That doesn't make the disaffected dissidents and their supporters generally or even mostly correct in their assessments.

Can you give me some context on this? I've never actually listened to Sam Harris at all. Was Sam Harris very pro vaccine and believed the mainstream covid narrative and attacked Eric for going against it? I'm just confused on the context of this whole thing. He was completely unwilling to have an honest discussion, basically dismissing any counterargument in the typical arrogant way we have come to know from him in the last few years. He also made some truly abhorrent comments on the Triggernometry Podcast about a year ago that he has yet to account for. He caught so much flak over it that he deleted his Twitter. It revealed him to be ideologically posessed, and when pressed on the issue since, he only doubles down instead of taking an honest look in the mirror. To me (and many others), he lost all credibility, both as an intellectual and especially as an authority on morality.

I'm curious as well since I don't really follow any of these guys a ton. I have heard Sam Harris and Bret Weinstein go back and forth on COVID. I can tell you that Sam is pro vaccine and Bret is anti vaccine. It got to the point where they weren't just debating each other. They were both being immature and insulting each other, attacking each others character at times, and it was actually sad to see, especially since they were friends, they both let their disagreements on COVID drive them apart, which I find absolutely ridiculous. I know they're both better than that. I have not heard Eric's position on these topics, but I assume he takes the same stance as Bret, since they're brothers and given what he said here. I have not heard Sam mention Eric specifically, or Eric mention Sam specifically regarding this topic until now, so I am also curious to the context of this. I'm curious to Sam and Eric's specific context , and what they have both said about each other before this, and how it got to this point from Eric's perspective. I'm also curious to Sams current perspective on Eric and his opinions.

In this discussion, I suggest a focus on the lack of love for our children- if people in power acted out of love and protection of children alone, we’d see a profound shift in behaviour that we’d all notice in our day to day lives. But our leaders and institutions are not likely to have been doing that. We need to love all our children deeply and act in a way that is their interests. They are our future and what they inherit, other than just money and property- is what will determine that they have it better than we do. Our children include: white, black, Arab, African, Asian.. all of us together and in no specific order. Inclusion is not a fairytale liberal idea.. it’s difficult and often messy and when we fail at it for no good reason or not a good enough reason, we need to admit it and make amends. Our futures depend on the fact that we get along and love each other and our children equally.

Can you provide a link? I think there is a lot hindsight and many are glossing over the "fog of war" effect. Covid was mutating with every wave, and the attributes like spread rate and method is not something known until its detected in the population. I'm a carpenter, but I work in historic restoration, so I occasionally interact with institutional settings like for instance the national park service. I have noticed that as you move up the chain in that organization, it becomes more and more likely that your superior is a narcissist. At a certain point, you have meetings where everyone is so busy bullshitting the others, that they are oblivious to the bullshit they're in turn being fed. It's quite a sight. If you want to advance in an organization like that, you need to tailor your behavior to fit the culture. Leaders are managing the narcissists above them, rather than the workers below them. The results are predictable and consistent because they reflect a consistent problem, but not an actual conspiracy

I don't understand how the idea that it's all chaos & unplanned is somehow less terrifying to them then it all being orchestrated

They love their children... they just don't care about my parents' children or grand children.
