I did go in this ship in 1992 when she was going from Sweden to Finland (Holmsund - Waasa). Also a school trip from my home town perished on the Estonia. A huge trauma for the other kids that didn't go on the trip. This documentry did, when it was released bring up some really bad trauma for me that I really thought I had worked trough. I'm really happy that you and other people learn about this horrfic sinking.

Where is the wreckage of said sub then? If it sits next to the wreck, it will surely have been detected by the sonar and the divers. It would have caused a huge international incident, similar to Kursk, and there would have been a big outcry from the relatives of the crew when a sub suddenly goes missing. I think it is just the Estonian and Swedish states not wanting the truth about the transfer of equipment going public. That kind of scandal would cause big political tension in both countries and humiliation when Ivan gets involved, which they definitely don't want to happen. I believe the official report more than conspiracies because we already have similar incidents on the Baltic Sea. Two very similar incidents are the ferry Jan Heweliusz, where a displacement of cargo led to the capsizing of the ferry in a storm, and more crucial, Estonia's sister ship Diana II, which almost had a similar fate when her bow visor locks got damaged in a storm and water started entering the car deck on both sides of the car ramp, but the crew intervened in time and prevented a disaster. Diana II had an identical hull to Estonia. Both of these incidences happened just one year before Estonia sank. So something is definitely fishy about the design of these ships and how the crews handled the situation.

I remember that very well. I was 14 and my whole school class was in shock. I remember many stories.from the survivors about flying vending machines and other stuff crushing people to death etc. In water that cold, human can survive 20-30 minutes in the water. In the winter time that would be much less. Tons of concpiracy theories about the sinking, but they are just nonsense. 2023 an international investigation was made and it concluded that the rupture on the side was caused when the ship hit the bedrock at the bottom. We must remember the masses we are talking about. There is mud, but also bedrock. The hole was not seen earlier because the mud covered it and also the ship has been moving during the years, which is normal. Also the rupture might have been grown during the movement. No evidence of explosions, submarines or anything else. Just nonsense.

I've believed from dsy 1 that it's Russia behind the incident. One way or another. Is there any case they would ever have been taken responsibility for what they've caused. I'd take these conspiracy theories with a substantial grain of salt. Estonia wasn't built to operate in open water, she was built for the archipelago. Add bad weather and poor construction and you have enough for a horrendous disaster.
