LADA RIVA ESTATE aka 2104 "Zhiguli": A Soviet car of the 1980s
In 1984, the versatile LADA 2104 "Zhiguli" estate car made its debut, sharing the assembly line in Tolyatti with its counterparts from different generations. It was not uncommon to witness the newest LADA 2108 alongside the enduring LADA 2102 and LADA 2104 models. The 2105/2107/2104 series aimed to replace the Italian-made 2101/2103/2102 vehicles. Soviet designers, engineers, and technologists embarked on an extensive modernization endeavor, focusing on cost reduction, production efficiency, and a contemporary facelift.
The implementation of timing belt-driven camshaft and licensed block-headlamps brought from abroad facilitated the subsequent introduction of the front-wheel-drive family with new engines. The LADA 2104, unveiled in 1984, arrived later than its "Fives" and "Sevens" counterparts but remained in production longer than any other rear-wheel-drive vehicle from the VAZ brand, continuing until 2012. These were significant episodes in the automotive history of the USSR.
