Learn Greek with Lina

6 років тому

In this lesson we'll learn the names of the clothes in Greek and we'll use them in everyday phrases and sentences, such as:
Φοράει ένα ροζ φόρεμα - She's wearing a pink dress, etc.
We'll also learn common phrases and idioms that have to do specifically with clothing and getting dressed : Ντύνομαι - I'm getting dressed, Φοράω τα καλά μου - I'm all dressed up etc.

This lesson is more encouraging than the single word lessons. But they all have their individual benefits.

Hi Lina In English any sweater that is closed and is worn over a shirt is called "a pullover" because we have to pull it over our head rather than put it on like a cardigan.
@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 6 років тому
Hello! Yes, it's obviously an English word, but for some reason in Greek it's used in a more limited sense; knitted pullovers! :-)

I am moving to Greece in the Spring. I am married to a Greek/American man. I have some knowledge of the Greek language, but now I want to study, and learn as much as I can before I arrive there. Thank you for your help. ☺

Great video! I like it better when you also give the phrases in spoken English though, because then I can pace around my living room multitasking while I learn some Greek!

Great lesson thanks Lina. Just a couple of things: In English we are more likely to say what shall I wear today ? and... What are you wearing to the party? Just tiny things you might like to know. However I wish I could speak Greek as well as you speak English!
@aggelosn.6846
@aggelosn.6846 5 років тому
Τι θα φορέσω/βάλω σήμερα; (what shall I wear today?). If it has the meaning of "should" instead of shall you have to replace θα with "να". The first version is asking, the second one is more like wondering. Τι θα φορέσεις/βάλεις στο πάρτυ; (What are you wearing to the party?) Actually "φοράω" means "to wear". Bάζω means "to put" but it is also used as "wear" in everyday language

Το κασκόλ sounds pretty like "cache-col" in french, an old-fashioned word meaning scarf too
@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 6 років тому
Yes, this is true! Actually In Greek there are many French words that have not been changed at all. Especially in clothing, beauty, hairdressing, food. I actually wanted to make a video about that. It is really interesting.

Hi Linda, I have been following lessons which I really learned lots with my enjoyment. Can I suggest you that you don’t need to speak too much English until it needs to explain in grammar way. Carry on your good work👍

it differs opinion to opinion. for myself it is very helpful when she includes some extended description of the particular word/sentence. it is her added value to the subject, because its easier to understand something when Lina decribes it rather just saying this means this etc. her work is so much more than just a translation/glossary

Learn Greek with Lina in Spanish we have chaqueta(σακάκι), calcetines(κάλτσες), botas(μπότες), pulover, ... but there are false friends too: bufanda - μπουφάν (κασκόλ-chaqueta), casco-κασκόλ (κράνος-bufanda), fusta-φούστα (καμουτσίκι-falda), ... they sound the same but the meanings are completely different

I had suspected that there would be some common words with Portuguese, Spanish, French and Italian. I'm so happy that l read your comments and learn all these new things myself!
@linaaaap1
@linaaaap1 6 років тому
Oh, I remember when I was studying Spanish a few years ago (I have to catch up btw) , I found very much in common with Greek. But I remember I'd noticed some cases like the ones you mention. Thank you for this, it was very interesting. 😀
