Fun fact you can also light a solar panel like an LED, it's definitely not as bright.

@@TechTroppy many solar panels will only emit in the infrared when you put a voltage across it.

I find that normal multimeters can't read the voltage the led produces, as they have a 1M ohm of leakage. That Arduino uno analog in pins can read the voltage very well! it's leakage is 40-60 M Ohms

Solar panels are basically just really large LEDs, though I think they emit mostly in the IR range if you pass a current through them

yup, I did it and it's also quite cool to see. It lights up in stripes and looks like broken glass (at least the cheap ones)

I remember finding out my headphones function as a mic. when I was a kid. And pv cells can emit light and heating elements and thermo couplings are similarly related. Love these ah ha moments. Motors and generators etc. The whole electro magnetic spectrum is full of this lovely symmetry.

Similar to how all speakers are also microphones. Also dc motors are also generators. So would the following sentences be true...those that show, can also watch. Those that talk and can also listen? So whatever we are... We are also the opposite, be it less sensitive. Beautiful metaphor.

The same can be said with solar panels. If a solar panel is powered it will glow although it's not bright and really dim.

I used to use LEDs, and especially flashing LEDs, as photodiodes in my BEAM robots in the early 2000s! Two of them in conjunction with a comparator and a solar charging circuit make a neat little photovore that moves itself to stay in the brightest light

And you can seemingly use both functions at the same time by switching it off quickly reconfiguring the port for input, reading it and turn it back on. The whole operation takes shorter than you can see.

Knew about this for awhile. You can actually use this for hacking. Solar panels are also bi-directional. Meaning if you put a current to it, it'll light up.

This also works with other Semiconductors, if you expose their Dye to light. Try it with an old, big Transistor by opening it's metal Can. Works like a Solarcell, not a good one but still.

Very interesting, but can still rememer going to the elderbeermans store in trotwood Ohio. I was looking to purchase a am/fm/shortwave stereo with a new feature that was a red light to indicate a good channel frequency was located. That red light was known as LED indicator. And by the way the band named The Eagles had just release a new hit song... Hotel California

We use LEDs like this to calibrate non photo tachometers the same way as regular photo tachometers.

If you could place a bug on a home computer running all the house IR cameras. You can essentially hack in by shining a laser light on and off at the sensor, and be able to have it make sense if you placed the correct bug/program of course.

In fact this is how solar panels work. Both LED (light emitting diodes) and solar panels work similarly but are reverse of each other.

2 leds in a pen body 1 fixed the other able to slide up and down works like a potentiometer but isolated.

Its all semiconductors they generate voltage when hit by photons, thats electronic parts tend to have the black shield.

Can you use a Photo-diode or resistor with an Oscilloscope(not Spectroscope) to analyse Frequency(-Patterns) from e.g. an Display(background) light? If there are ones. At 0.Hz to 1000(T)Hz. with or without Modulations. If not, is there an alternative Sensor? To rule out an epilepsy seizure?

Depends on how much light you put into it and the responsivity of the LED when used as a photodiode. A high power LED isn't likely to be any better than a small one, and you definitely want to avoid any LEDs that use phosphors e.g. white.

I tried this with green LED and nothing happened. I also tried this with an IR LED at 940 nm wave length and still nothing. I tried to use this concept for a DIY break beam sensor at close range and got nothing.

My experiments with an orange LED show nanoAmps... Not even registerable on a multimeter, and certainly not directly connectable to a uC pin. Though, now that I think of it, it could be a phosphor-coated blue LED... hmm.

Infrared light from a solar panel. This is actually used to check panels for damage, it will clearly show up cracks etc when viewed with an infrared camera.

I have seen someone make a gesture sensor of sorts. They made an 8x8 LED matrix and they turn off one LED at a time and measure the light reflected by the hand close to it.

There is no lens to focus the light, so every LED would see a fraction of the same light.

Makes things like this seem far less malicious than folk of my generation were warned of. But, yeah, think about it... do you really think the almighty dollar, times two hundred, could possibly manufacture, in any country, two perfectly-parallel sheets of glass, separated by an exact number of microns throughout its entire 52in-diagonal surface? They'd pay us to buy these things, if it wouldn't make us suspicious.

I once used a 1N4148 as LED. Wondering why it was yellow and not green - the color LED I had bought. Then realized it was the wrong diode and that I sent a huge amount of current through it.
