I really like the concept, but I feel like there are two shortfalls- 1) the speed at which technology advances, one simple software upgrade that isn’t compatible with your hardware and it’s just another expense, or your installed hardware fails, but there isn’t a new device compatible with your/Sero’s eco-system. 2) With that in mind, this almost feels like a house as a subscription service, how long will it be until a company like this feels as though they should be getting a profit from it all, and start increasing costs? (Similar how to IFTTT built up a user base with free access, then decided to charge for its usage)

It’s a concern when adopting any new technology. However all the kit in this house are stand alone items which in the worst case can used in manual mode. Interestingly most of them - battery, EV charger and hot water tank all gave their own cloud based controls. Sero have used the manufacturers API to connect them together in one App.

So what happens when Sero sells out to a larger outfit, or plain goes bust. In the mean time they know everything about your life within the home.

Don't think they really know everything about your life - just how much energy you use for heating, light, power and your car. It's not much different to property supplied by a district heating scheme with CHPs

Will that be a standard for all consumer units regulated and unregulated circuits ? Should we be starting to think and install in that way now ?

Who knows but this kind of installation will be more common. Let’s see what pops out in amendment 2 in relation to prosumer installations.

@@efixx a fair point, but with the recent demise of so many utility firms, I'd be nervous. I'll be interested if you could do a follow up video in say maybe a year. Or even an interview with a resident?

@@efixx I believe it is, because the whole house energy isn't controlled by a single supplier. Given the collapse of energy supply companies, Sero are either exposed or will charge households without a cap.

Really interesting video and what a great development. I find it so depressing when I'm driving round seeing all the main house builders throwing up poorly insulated new homes with no renewables and gas boilers. The Government really should be legislating on this. There's a huge house building boom going on at the moment and it's such a massive missed opportunity if they're old fashioned houses which are only going to need retrofitting in a few years time when they could just be built properly first time round. It's refreshing to see that some developments are at least doing things right and building the houses we need going into a decarbonised future.

It was mentioned that renewable energy had to be turned off due to lack of demand and that this could have been stored in the home. Why is it not possible for the energy provider to scale the technology to store the surplus energy at the "power station". This would seem the most logical answer rather than turning off the renewables.

The houses featured here are built by a housing association - available on shared ownership and help to buy.

I do find your videos interesting……Just a couple of comments. A 3 kw heat pump is the output of the heat pump and with a cop of 3 has an input of 1 kw. I don’t think a 3 kw heat pump can be the equivalent of a 10 kw gas boiler. Not sure what Sero are trying to be. Their website is not clear. Are they predominately middle men ? Sooner we get back to being a world leader in nuclear power the better.

I'd prefer pushing investment towards a way of producing energy cheaply enough that we don't need to bother with metering at all!!! I think at some point in the future humans will look back on this period and think, 'i can't believe people lived in a world where they couldn't afford to heat/cool their homes'... The current situation is a disgrace.

You cannot import electricity into ground source heat pump. Had developer gone further passive house concept would have removed need for space heating. Ground source should get COP OF around 5. Cop of 3 air source can do. All a good start though.

The heat pumps can run when cheap grid energy is available - essentially storing energy in the underfloor heating or hot water. Then tuned off when peak demand energy is expensive.

Say they go bankrupt, you're left with a bunch of unusable kit. If not, 5 years later they've created a new version, time to upgrade all your hardware. Oh, and thrn there's a subscription cost.

If they did suddenly vanish - all of the kit is stand alone - sonnen battery, mixergy tank etc - so it could be used manually

This is so over the top. Just build better houses that have less energy demand. A huge number of customers will not want this they can barely use a programmer for heating let understand or need this tech.
