Tesla has developed MAJOR breakthroughs with a 3.7 Million Mile Battery as well as HUGE advancements in Sodium Ion technology which may ultimately rival Lithium Ion. While the pace of innovation in battery technology has been too slow for Elon Musk, he's invested heavily in Jeff Dahn's battery research lab to ignite this rate of progress. With Sodium Ion, we're now witnessing a massive drop in costs thanks to experiments that show added calcium reduces Sodium ion battery sensitivity to moisture and therefore no longer require a dry room for manufacturing. Furthermore, NMC532 may be the best Lithium Ion battery available today, with the best of both worlds in terms of energy density and cycle life, and may soon make its way into Tesla's products! #tesla #elonmusk #sodiumion

Using miles to evaluate batteries is ridiculous and provides very little information. What counts is price per Whr of capacity, cost per cycle, cycle life, cell voltage range between full charge and discharge, gravimetric and volumetric energy and power density, charge and discharge C rates, ability to manufacture at scale, and safety. All of these put together determine a battery cells suitability for its purpose, and a battery must meet specific combinations of these attributes, be integrated into a specific battery pack, and be matched to a specific vehicle to be able to be eligible to be a "million mile" battery.

Battery chemistry candidates are legion. Few will make it to market. But if.nobody looks, then for damn sure, nobody will find better chemistries. Lots of people are looking, but few have a better track record than Jeff Dahn and his Dalhousie University team. They've been amazing. I'm always happy for updates on the research front, but I have to temper my excitement for research discoveries. Until new battery types reach market, it's all speculation. Ever notice that in the pure research phase, researchers are happy to publish papers and share results, but when a candidate goes into development for actual products, everyone goes silent? That's how we know that Toyota isn't close to commercializing solid state batteries. They're too noisy. Jeff is pure research. When Tesla grabs his work and works on commercialization, mum's the word. I enjoyed your summary, though. There really should be no doubt, better batteries are coming.

As noted by @GoCoyote There are many variables to consider. For instance, a "smaller" vehicle (mentioning no names 😉) Considerations. Superficially Vehicle cost? (so pack/ cell cost) would be important, . In which case "choose the cheapest cell!! . But based on what? Sodium, touted as "the next cheap option!" May seem obvious, but has poor volumetric density (it's "big") . Will it physically fit while providing decent range? . What's the form factor? CATL are currently telling us their new cells, combined in a structural pack, provide great density *at pack level* due to their square section format (no air gaps in the pack) this also makes the *vehicle* efficient, because a pack which removes structure from the body is a double benefit. . Next, the chemistry. Nickel vs LFP (and now) vs LMP vs M3P (ironic name??) . High gravimetric energy density (Nickel based) may be associated with the larger, "top end" performance vehicles, but, actually, in a small vehicle, the pack will necessarily account for a higher percentage of vehicle weight. . Also, with less physical space, higher high density means fewer cells. . As a consequence, it could be logical to fit a low physical volume, high energy density structural pack in the smallest vehicle. . Add a high C rate charge capability and the pack could be made even smaller, compounding the *vehicle* efficiency gain. . Another factor. Production efficiency . The "Ace in the hole" of the Tesla 4680? Small modular factory. Low energy production. Energy dense, low resistance *mechanical* construction. "Machine gun" factory output. . THAT'S 69% of the 4680 advantage (imo) . THEN add the possibility of various chemistries? . Imagine being able to ship a modular factory to a site, then tweak the process (chemistry) to suit the application? . Bulk storage (Megapack) factory? 4680 Sodium (Calcium doped)? . Home storage (Powerwall)? 4680 LMFP/ M3P? . SEMI? Long range (650m+) 4680 NMC / M3P? . MID range (400+) 4680 LMFP? . Cars ....pick one. . Taxi/ Compact (same vehicle!) *Possibly* structural 4680 40kWh high C rate NMC with 5-10 minute 150 mile charge? . Endless permutations..... But nothing set in stone. The "Battery Wars" will continue!

They are not using cobalt in mass production. This are laboratory research just because they have done it in the lab does not mean they will move into mass production. So the lab tested this cobalt battery and it is really good but the cobalt makes it not ideal for mass production. @imzjustplayin Well, that fraction is what matters. I won't go deep into the science of alkali ion batteries, but particle size will correlate with the size of the battery. EV Range anxiety simply wont exist once the charging network is fully mature. Sodium is far more abundant than Lithium, cheaper, can charge faster and is safer and works better in winter. Most drivers don't even travel 230 km per day ( representing the lowest storage density of 160 Wh/kg ). For the rare times when people do need to go longer distances, they could hire a car. If they regularly travel longer distances, they could buy a hybrid EV. There's a solution for every use case. On that basis Sodium ion batteries could service a significant chunk of the EV market. What they really need to do - as a matter of utmost urgency - is create a battery chemistry that does not spontaneously combust and explode with thermal runaway. Otherwise insurance companies are going to shut down the EV revolution before it has really begun.
@ThePetlowany
@ThePetlowany 6 місяців тому
Meh. Insurers are interested in overall liability and safety statistics and those facts point to superior safety in Tesla products as the EV leader. Statistical studies of ICE/EV vehicle fires have shown that, even when correcting for the relatively low percentage of EV vs ICE vehicles, EVs are more then 16 times LESS likely to catch fire than ICE vehicles. Your use of the word "spontaneously" is also dubious, as many of the documented EV fires have been shown to be caused by damage to the propulsion battery assembly or manufacturing defect. For example. BMW recalled some 2022 i4 EVs for a mechanical defect that could cause an internal short in the battery assembly. Properly assembled batteries do not spontaneously combust. In short, insurers recognize the overall safety advantages of EVs, and in many cases your premium may be LOWER than insuring an ICE vehicle.

@@cryptoico2647 200 miles is nothing. With my 515 mile range, i only have to stop once for 7 minutes when traveling the 831 miles from Lancaster Pennsylvania to Jacksonville Florida. You have to stop 4 times for 10 minutes, thatvis if you can find a super charger.

@@carlsmith5545 well, If you’re traveling for 800 plus miles. That is over 10 hrs driving. Why not take a plane? You sure you only wants to take 2 breaks for such a long drive. That is just health and safety hazard risk

"Hopefully it will allow the EV to charge from 0 to 100 percent in 7 minutes instead of hours, the same amount of time it takes me to fully fuel. " Why? Typically you don't want to charge 0-100, and it won't take hours. "Hopefully it will increase range to 500 to 515 miles, just like my 2021 jaguar XJl i just brought." Just like now there will be varying range in the cars being sold. Most people will never need that much range though. "Maybe Tesla will come out with a full size, luxury car for those of us who prefer luxury." Define luxury? "Hopefully these batteries wount burst into flames." Why would they? "Maybe they will come out with charging stations that charges all EVs just like all gas nosals fits all gas cars" That's already true in places like Europe. And the standardization process seems to have started in USA as well. "I would love to buy an EV but they just have to be improved." In what way? You demanded an extreme amount of range, didn't know how fast charging is, and complained about the standardization of charging technology. If you buy a Tesla you won't have a problem with any of this. "Till then I'll keep my gas car for 7 minutes down times and far greater range, giving me the ability to keep moving when on a long distance over the road travels......." You should take breaks anyway when driving very long distances. The fast charging of modern EVs like Tesla and Hyundai makes it hard for some people to even eat some food while charging.

Most be people charge at home and visit a super charger only on a long journey. Some people never have to visit a charging station. Its way less expensive to charge than it is to fill with gasoline. Gasoline is far more likely to catch fire than batteries just doesn’t get reported in the news much.

What do you think? Vehicle to grid is important. Range. Cycle life. That's all NMC 532. Anything else is economics. Imo Vehicle to grid, might be the governments only answer to the lack of energy storage in a new world of sustainable energy.

It is in use, but in only the base Model Y. Tesla is still struggling with the dry process, and it hasn't met Tesla's expectations. That's the reason why they have not scaled up 4680 production to the max. Far from it. As a result, they are not producing enough 4680 batteries to meet their full line vehicle production. Tesla bought Maxwell battery dry process tech in order to simplify cell manufacturing (and save cost), but they have not succeeded in bringing this process to full scale.
