That's basically most elf kingdoms in a nutshell. At least the Dwarves left their homes to move to a better one, and the edain eventually ended up going to Numenor. The elves got screwed over many times but it's mostly due to their own vanity and pride being the cause of their suffering (and the elves of the first age were very strong).

The lands of Beleriand and their history has become by FAR my favourite part of the legendarium. Strange to think that it was the Third Age and the events at the time of the War of the Ring that led me to fall in love with Tolkien's work in the first place. Honestly, once you dive into the incredible depths of the legendarium the events of the finding of the Ring and the War of the Ring become almost a footnote.

First and second age middle earth are just so damned interesting. All that was, by the third age, are just legends, or songs...dim memories of what was once real. Reading the LOTR, you get the sense of loss...particularly among the elves but really among all the races. The cities, kingdoms, the mountains and forests, all that has passed. I guess its that memory and the sense of sadness that you can follow throughout the tale that's part of what makes it so compelling to me. Tolkien was brilliant.

Michael Fisher, some things that should not have been forgotten were lost. History became legend. Legend became myth. And for two and a half thousand years, the ring passed out of all knowledge. @lizardlegend42
@lizardlegend42 3 роки тому
It would no doubt have to be a series, and an anthology series at that. At least we're getting parts of the Akallabêth in the Amazon series coming out soon. I assume it'll mainly be about the downfall of Nûmenor, which is what made me incredibly excited for the series. Perhaps if it's successful (and hopefully if it's good) they'll do another show about the actual Quenta Silmarillion
@redpilledtrooper7523
@redpilledtrooper7523 3 роки тому
@@lizardlegend42 Yeah but we all know the amazon show is a corporate entity handling the series, which means they will sell the corpse of old Tolkien himself in exchange for identity political boxes checked. It was even in the hobbit when there were lots of people in lake town that looked chinese. I understand easterlings might look middle eastern, but I know this series is going to suck. They wanted to fit in Gandalf ( despite the istari not showing up until the third age) and if you look at the cast, they hardly look european/british/scandanavian. I realise this is a gripe about ethnicity, but when they blatantly change it because it fits their grocery list, it pisses me off. Even though the 6 peter jackson films arent perfect, they are the best we will get for a while, since there is no way that films like that would be filmed today. The men of the west representing Duty, Honor and sacrificing themselves for the freedom of their people. The quest for peace and the pursuit of happiness. The biblical themes and the triumph over evil. Its not a question of if, its a question of how amazon will butcher it. The fall of Numenor should be epic. Here we have an island gifted to the Edain for their help in destroying Morgoth. They are blessed with longer lives, greater height and more power and wisdom than other men. Then their quest to vanquish Sauron slowly corrupts itself and eventually he is the one controlling Numenor and even having the men worship Morgoth instead of Eru Illuvitar. This leads to Illuvitar sinking the island and Sauron losing his body. The themes of the flood narrative and tower of babel as well as atlantis are seen here, and shows this twin rebellion of spirit and human against their creator and the consequences. The irony of how their first king chose to be human and take the gift of man to die, and the later kings fear death and are deceived into thinking living in Valinor will make them immortal like the elves. All so sad.

Too far east. It actually corresponds to Atlantis. The Shire in Middle Earth is roughly where England is in relation to the Old World (not a coincidence: a lot of people don't realise that LOTR is supposedly set in our own distant past, rather than on another planet) and Beleriand would have started a few hundred miles west of that. So in Tolkien's parallel universe, the Drowning of Beleriand and then of Numenor eventually gave rise to the myths of Atlantis, Noah's Flood, etc.
@bookmarksbowsprits1183
@bookmarksbowsprits1183 Рік тому
@@gordoning76 I should have stated it a bit differently. I don't actually think that Tolkien had Doggerland in mind necessarily, and I do know that Numenor is based on Atlantis, The Shire on England, etc. I also didn't state that although the majority of Doggerland was between Britain and Europe, there was also quite a bit of land west and surrounding/ connecting the British Isles, so its not that far off geographically.
@giorgiograffino3724
@giorgiograffino3724 Рік тому

Great stuff! At some point I'd really love to see a video exploring the world beyond the standard maps - the lands to the south of Umbar, and maybe even the other continents of Arda. In the meanwhile keep up the good work.

I'm working on scripting the next Tolkien 101. I have a couple others I'm working on for next week in the meantime. If you're interested in the battles of Beleriand, I highly recommend my series on Morgoth. I highlight all the battles during the course of those vids: ukposts.info/have/v-deo/kqV5gK-toIySznU.html
