It's already a success if you think that the cheap gearbox held at over 160,000 rpm. It was the most reasonable thing to test it before mounting it on the wankel. Seriously, ANY suggestion will help and make me more than happy that you are part of this.

@@soupisgoodfood42 Well, sorta. It's proportional to the volume of air its delivering. At 1.5PSI (above atmospheric) whether its a little motorbike engine or a 6.2L v8 you're still adding ~10% more air and thus 10% more fuel at a set AFR, and in theory 10% power. But in a bigger engine, you're obviously going to gain more power for every pound of boost; Lets say you have a 2.5L engine and a 5L engine, in theory, your going to gain twice as much power on the 5L engine for each pound of boost you feed it. So 1.5lb of boost is not much even on a tiny engine

Been in the turbo industry for a long time and I was about to say... for max efficiency, ditch that 90. Air does not like to be forced past 19-22 degrees. The Japanese knew this.. that’s why their bends are wide and smooth on their most powerful setups...2JZ/RB26/SR20 etc... we also use Venturi stacks where we can in the intake side to avoid step face eddy’ing. First off: u are a true master of art/tech. So my input is same as others have said, u need to seal housing as ur loosing pressure somewhere on there. Second u need a miniature blow off valve to keep pressure in and release as throtle goes down. Just those 2 things will raise the boost as it is. Looking forward to part 4 with sugestions. Keep it up john. FYI, i would buy a setup like that just to keep on a desk and turn her on to hear spool up and blow off valve. That would make an awsome desk prop... let us know...

Santiago Giuntoli dude yur really over thinking it. A turbocharger is powered by exhaust gasses. A supercharger is powered by a belt. While yes they are both forced induction, just because it looks like a turbo or “functions” like one does not make it one.
@mandarin1257
@mandarin1257 3 роки тому
@Santiago Giuntoli the "turbo" in turbocharger comes from the word "turbine", which is a rotary device that extracts rotary motion from a fluid. A turbocharger is a form of supercharger, but not the other way round. So this is a supercharger, and NOT a turbocharger.

Guys. First of all, thank you all for your kind and positive comments. It really means a lot. To the point though: I need someone to describe with detail the device that I need to make in order to measure the pressure correctly. I imagine some kind of container with the pressure gauge attached to it, instead of having it exactly in the outlet of the compressor. Something that I can fabricate easily and actually work. I want to do this before I actually jump and make any of the the modifications that I mention in the video. You can also share the video with your friends, so more opinions drop on the table ;)
@xibidit
@xibidit 4 роки тому
well what i can think of is to have a container that "leaks" slightly, the boost pressure is just a restriction measurement, the air that hasnt made it inside the engine yet. i think you need flow as well as a restrictive container. im no scientist you already know everything i have to say =) hope you get it right though because this is amazing content

Here's a pic of the general idea. The blower needs to be able to pass air through it, then manometers are used to measure pressure in the air stream vs. ambient pressure: dataconeengineers.com/products?id=1154 Just one homemade manometer in the output tube is all you need, then restrict the output after the manometer with something adjustable, a flap valve or just your finger, to adjust the output restriction to a realistic level, similar to the restriction of the engine's intake.

Not saying it's a huge problem, but... The China guages are hit and miss, I've used several some are dead out of the box and most don't match up with each other I.E. one reads 5 one reads 3. People are also confusing boost. Boost is a measure of engine restriction. If you setup a valve and open it boost will drop, close it and boost will rise. This equals engine volumetric efficiency. Full flow no boost, closed valve, turbine stall? The other thing I haven't followed closely enough is if the compressor is or should be sized to the engine...I'm sure you can calculate it , I'm not familiar with doing so on a Wankel. Then there is controlling boost...another ball of wax. Mini diaphragm waste gate!!!
@robthatguyx
@robthatguyx 4 роки тому
Something to take into consideration is that this is currently making 1.5 psi of boost without the nitro engine acting as a vacuum sucking in air in through the outlet. As others have pointed out I think this thing is going to need to produce a significant amount more of rpm to make effective boost while on an engine. Looking forward to seeing the next update!

The PSI gauge shown is not one you should use to test your supercharger pressure. It has not been calibrated and not setup for flow throughput measurements. It's designed for containment. What you're really after is volume measurement, or cubic centimeters per minute. It might be possible to adapt a small car engine Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor and read the voltage differentials using an Arduino Uno board. I've seen several makers successfully make one. Your impeller design looks very good for the size and volume required. Adding directional vanes should not be necessary. I do agree with your decision to remove the elbow. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this episode!

I agree. With the setup like this 12:56 the charger is running with 0% massflow and chrager are not designed for that point of operation. You are sitting on the surge-line. A characteristic can look like this: content.mynah.com/mimic-webhelp/Content/Resources/Images/simulationstudio/blocks/adv_blocks/Compressor/Axial%20Compressor.png Imagine: There is no air going in-or out the charger. So there is no moving air, its just sitting on the blades and rotates the same speed as the rotor. If so, there is no air-friction-resistance that could push against the sensor and the hole supercharge is running in no load.
@DougHanchard
@DougHanchard 4 роки тому
@@ferch4846 it's been my experience, with small supercharger inlet diameters (less than 30 mm), the need for an intake runner is not necessary and does not make a significant difference. One likely reason is the air density ratio does not significantly change. In fact, it will actually create a restriction given the low negative (low pressure) atmospheric conditions. Large 50 to 120 mm diameter intakes can leverage a intake manifold design because of the volume of air and design of the impeller. Belt driven superchargers like the Paxton work well without a precision air horn. These were common modifications to Small Block Ford 5.0 liter engines installed in a cramped engine bay.

That's just static pressure. It would be next to nothing when running it on an engine. There's a LOT to be improved before it even becomes usable, considering he actually calculated everything to make sure everything is the correct size for his engine. For me, it looks like the impeller is way too small. Not gonna have enough flow. Also, for an impeller that size, it should be spinning around 3 times as fast to generate enough boost/flow.

Ive seen people upgrade from metal ball bearings to ceramic in their RC drivetrains for racing, the primary disadvantage being that they are more delicate. You need to increase the diameter of the turbine wheel base in proportion to the inlet diameter. A majority of the energy from the impeller is imparted to the fluid (air) at the outer edges of a turbine wheel. The further away the blades are placed from the center of the axis of rotation the more energy from the motor the turbine wheel will turn into air velocity. By the looks of it there is plenty of space in housing to accommodate a larger diameter turbine wheel.
@sergeykrukovski4011
@sergeykrukovski4011 4 роки тому
First it's kind of difficult, it other words means a lot of work to make a bigger one again. Second, there is an optimum of efficiency depending on the wheel diameter with the same airflow. Sometimes it's more efficient to have a smaller compressor wheel which spins faster. I'd really advise to calculate an approx airflow and the corresponding wheel parameter at least in a simple way, for example using VistaCCD app.
@ADRIAAN1007
@ADRIAAN1007 4 роки тому
@@sergeykrukovski4011 I agree with what you are saying, however at this scale all turbines are inherently inefficient. However a small turbine can only move so much air at some point speed becomes irrelevant and the only way to increase flow is by using a bigger turbine.

DAMN! I've just, moments before clicking comment, realised I'm now commenting on a one year old video! However, what I was going to say was: Dude, this is seriously impressive engineering, you built your own gearbox, which has proven itself reliable operating at 135,000+ rpm, this was to drive your own centrifugal supercharger, the volute for the centrifugal supercharger with the elbow etc is a very nice piece of multi axis-machining. I operate at the other end of the scale - fixing oil rigs - but I am genuinely impressed with your talent. I don't think you'll see much gains from taking off the "turbo" elbow, the real gains will be in tightening the tolerances between impeller and volute, although removing the elbow will reduce flow restrictions, increasing the "head" with which your "fluid" (air) hits the gauge possibly increasing the reading, but not necessarily indicating any more flow and flow = power in this context.

This is really awesome stuff. Thanks for sharing. You have inspired me to learn more about machines and engineering. Maybe new materials technologies can make applications like these more cost efficient/practical. We live in very interesting times and I am excited about the solutions technology might provide. I have read some about the Bernoulli Principle and atmospheric pressure. Good luck figuring your project out. I had wondered when I first saw your video about making the impeller if the “laws”/phenomena are a bit different when considering proportions.

136k rpms is not enough. Your wheel tip speed needs to be max 1,400fps/427m/s. I suspect your wheel will be above 300k rpms to make effective boost. Great work!
@wnodzykowski
@wnodzykowski 4 роки тому
Agree, you are way outside of the max efficiency zone. 130k for impeller this size is nothing. Try gearing it for higher RPM (at least 300k) first, then look for improvements. Overall amazing job, always pleasure to watch :)
@timesthree5757
@timesthree5757 4 роки тому
What? He doesn't even need to produce that much boost for an engine that size to increase engine power.
@joekirian3657
@joekirian3657 4 роки тому
If you guys do the math, assuming the wheel has a diameter of 25mm, then for it to reach a tip speed of 427m/s, it needs to do 326,214 rpms. Diffusor wedges are good, but will limit the efficiency envelope to a somewhat small range. Bladed diffusors are good at pressure recovery when ran at the calculated design point. Once you get off that, you'll start getting flow separation and efficiency/ pressure recovery will drop, worst case it'll send the compressor into surge. If you plan on using the engine in a plane that will be ran at a constant 75%-100%, then use the wedges. If it will be used in a rc car, stick to a bladeless diffusor.
@timesthree5757
@timesthree5757 4 роки тому
@@joekirian3657 The other thing to remember is that downscaling increases efficiency. I think he will be fine. Even a small amount of boost will produce large gains in power.

Great video and awesome work machining that! At 8:16 when you use the bottle to lube the gears, some metal filings come back with it. something that spins fast and requires a good seal should be mega clean when it goes together. if you put a radius on the face of the compressor intake ID bore, or even taper it from where it starts, you'll have better intake airflow!
