I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman with the 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam way back in 1969. I remember laying under my shelter half on the top of a mountain near the DMZ listening to Neil Armstrong on a little transistor radio as he stepped onto the surface of the moon. My next duty station was at the Marine Corps Air Station at Kaneohe, Hawaii. While there, a TV crew from the old Hawaii 5-O series came to our base to request some military "extras" for a scene being filmed at the airport in Honolulu. I volunteered and got to spend a day watching how the crew made the scene happen that I was in. I'm 67 years old now but I can go to Hulu any time I want and watch that old episode that I was in as a 25 year old kid. Hey, thanks for the video!

I went thru basic training in the US Army in the early 60's. The drill sergeants never touched us, but they got right in our faces and shouted. It was very intimidating (and effective) because they were all super in-shape and you knew you wouldn't do well at all in a physical conflict with them. The only pain they inflicted was through the pushups and laps you would have to do if/when you goofed up. That was a great fire you had! Thanks for the video.

Hooah! Not much had changed because in 1999 when I joined they’re still in your face so close I could smell his wife’s chapstick from his breath!! Lol!! But soon I graduated that mean DS was my brother in arms! Once 9/11 happened and OEF & OIF was kicked off and was deployed down range I really appreciated the DS’s being hard on us!!

One of my favorites. I like the equipment reviews. I like the sharp commentary on style and what makes sense. Great attitude. I guess it's a blessing; not everyone is happy for some reason. But, I disagree about the mag fire starter. The cord is plenty long. Use shorter strokes. It's not like swinging at a baseball.

Interesting to hear about your grandfather and his experiences of WW2... my two grandfathers had very different experiences during the war, my fathers father joined the British Army in April 1939, he was a member of the 8th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry and fought the Germans in France in 1940 at Arras and then was evacuated at Dunkirk... he left the Durham Light Infantry to join a new unit called the Commando's in 1941, in 1943 was sent to the East to fight the Japanese, on the way his ship was attacked by Italian aircraft and then the entire flotilla was re-routed to fight the French on Madagascar, eventually he did get to India and fought the Japanese right thoughout Burma as part of 5 Commando... so he fought against (or at least was shot at) by every country Britain took on in WW2... my other grandfather was 12 in 1940, living in Tartu, Estonia. The Russians came to the town rounding up "volunteers" and whilst my grandfather was out hunting they tried to get his father and eldest brother to join the army, they refused, were put against a wall and shot dead. My grandfather and the few remaining young men of the town fled westwards. He joined the German army and worked as a translator (his mother was a teacher and taught various languages, including Russian and German), but he was sent to France in 1944 to be a translator where thousands of Russian prisoners worked on Hitlers Atlantic Wall defences against an Allied invasion. When the Allies landed he surrendered to the first American he saw, who shot him after taking his fathers watch and money. The American must have thought he'd killed him because he left him for dead but another American came along and they got a medic to look after him, eventually he was sent to England to get better and after a short time in a prisoner of war camp decided to stay in England.

Ok concerning the tent. The 2 man tents we (USMC Infantry) used before were covered with a fly, and the poles ran under. When we would get out often in a rush in Afghanistan. When water or snow was puddled up on top it would soak us, our weapons, and gear. Which in -30 degrees would make for a very terrible excursion. We were in the Hindu Kush and Tora Bora mountains back in 04. To add some extra insulation plus some concealment (several green or tan tents sticking out like a turd in the snow is the enemy's best dream) so we shoveled snow up the sides to make a wind barrier. After the contractors got word of how bad those tents royally sucked, they changed the design. The exterior poles catches rain and diverts it off to the side of the tent. Unlike the old 2-person where all the rainwater fell off around the tent making puddles underneath even if we dug diversion lines around. And when it snows...the roof is covered and all the extra falls off the sides for better insulation and serves as concealment. I hope that helps clear things up. Great video! Sgt. USMC (Ret.)

TacticalDefender, The snow muffles all the sound very nicely, with all its air pockets. Where I grew up we had an elevated train route. One of the passenger trains was named, The Phoebe Snow, and it was pulled by a big Diesel engine. It didn't make too much noise because it didn't go screaming through the city areas, but when we'd have a nice, heavy snow and it was at night time, when everyone was home, The Phoebe Snow would come along and there was just a low growl because of the sound-damping of the snow. I loved it. We had old-time street lights-gas- and I still think about how beautiful it was at night, with the golden glow of the lights, with the snow falling and absolute quiet. Snow on the trees. I felt like I was inside of a Christmas card. You're right--It is magical.

My brothers, friends and I experienced exactly this back in the early 80's while camping. We went to bed Saturday night with clear skies above and woke up Sunday morning with 8-10 inches of snow on the ground. We had no clue a storm was coming in, either. It's one of the best camping trips I've been on, and we still talk about it to this day. Thanks for reliving those memories for me.

And I just love your enthusiasm about just about everything you get your hands on, its great to watch someone who is truly enjoying what they do! :D I almost didn't believe I'd ever find someone who loves snow the same way as I do :) Man I'd be stoked to get out in conditions like this! Unfortunately I live in Denmark where winter consists mostly of rain, and without mountains, so I need to travel around in europe to get similar conditions, but that won't stop me from hunting that snow. It's like an addiction.. just worse ;) But yeah, great video and best of luck with future tours like this!

Quick tip, put the MRE meal in the bag first then add water, It will keep you from burning your finger if the thermal reaction is too quick also you can shake the meal/bag to make sure the water hits the whole heating pad and lastly put the meal in backwards into the box gives it better seal, It may blow up the box so keep an eye on it, Semper Fi Good video TY

Also, take your knife and open the MRE bag LENGTHWISE, instead of where the bag has its tear points-makes it much easier to eat, instead of getting food and shit all over your fingers, when you try to get the last 1/3 of the food out of the bag. *A USGI seat belt cutter escue hook makes a great MRE opener. *If you come across a "Gregory" Lage Ruck, or better yet, the whole pack system (Lage Pack, Assault Pack, Butt Pack, and the 4 MOLLE pockets to add to either Lg or Assault packs, and the series of stuff sacks as well...great system.)Pick it up....I loved it. It came in Woodland or 3 color desert camo. or, very rare, black. *Whee did you pick up the tent in this video? In US Army SOF, we were issued a different individual tent than this, however, I like this better, and would like to get one, tho, anything with "US Navy SEAL" attached to,or in the product name, the price-for some stupid reason-becomes very inflated. Still, I would like to see if I could afford one, or trade one of my US Army SOF tents for one of these. *Do you carry a IFAK/First Aid kit with you? If not, you should really think about getting and carrying one for emergencies that may arise on the trail.

I didn't read all the comments so this might have been covered, but your tent seems to be missing the rain fly. Those seams would hold liquid water also.

Reminds me of a story about a man and his wife discussing their anniversary. The man asked his wife, “where would you like to go for our anniversary? She said, “take me somewhere I have never been before”. His reply......”how about the kitchen”?....lol

I'm always looking for a better campfire configuration, and I really appreciated the simple elegance of yours. In a fire ring sort of a setup, I build 90 degree layers, flat, then start the fire on top of the pile that might be 5 to 6 layers deep. Requires very little attention (but it's hard to resist rearranging a fire...just because!). Thanks for the tip. And thanks for the upbeat and enthusiastic tone of the video. I too enjoy the colder weather, probably because all of my military experiences were in very hot places that I never wanted to visit to begin with... As far as the military experience...it's such an overwhelming and totally immersive experience, even if one's experience wasn't that bad. Lots of people react in lots of different ways, after millions have come home to have wonderful lives. Coming home front Vietnam, I soon found that there were precious few people that I could share the experience with, to sort of work it out, so like most people, it got buried. Took awhile, but I was able to have a full and happy life. But remember, for those who were difficult to deal with, like your grandfather (and I acknowledge that some may have thought that of me...), their prayers were answered for the most part, and they were able to come home and live into old age. I'm sorry your grandfather met a violent end, but we are the product of many factors that are not always in our control, and war tends to be all that and more, in spades. Thanks again for your upbeat enthusiasm...it really is nourishing for the soul!

Back in the 80s I was going thru Army Basic and during a run I was starting to lag behind. Not saying I was hit but I felt a boot kick my ass. I soon picked up the pace for fear what could be next. Looking back whoever did that was giving me the "boost" I needed to carry on lol.....

Grown up with the army so going through OSUT was a joke. All their tuff guy screaming routine lol . I new it was all bullshit and once you were done it was a cake walk at the unit level don't fuck up too bad get 300's at pt . Till you get a sham shield best rank in the army all down hill after that then its all gravy .You really got to be a tool to screw up in the army or have fubar family issues but that's usually because your a tool there too.

There's like a million pairs of old surplus german/swedish military wool pants. They cost anywhere around 35-50 bucks on eBay depending on your size. They are very sturdy, they are thick, they are warm, and they absolutely will not fail you. Amazing value for the money I would check it out
