Colwill can do that as well and better. White is needed because even though Trent plays rb, there’s a chance he starts in the midfield so if Walker gets suspended or injured, then you can swap Walker with White and keep Trent pulling the strings in the midfield

@@paulcasey4282Colwill is too young, and his inexperience has shown this season at times. Gomez doesn’t have the ceiling Colwill has, but he has more experience and is less prone to commit rookie mistakes. Both Colwill and Gomez should be part of the squad though

Can't tell if this video was a your squad or what you think Gareth will pick. Title says one thing, but the tiers and half the narrative around certain players at times when putting them into those tiers was "Gareth won't pick him" (like JWP in no chance) and then on other occasions it was "this is my squad, this is what I'd take".

He played as a 6 in the the u21 euros and was probably the best player in the competition ahead of Palmer and Gordon. He's done it for Liverpool too. He's 6'1, strong and quick its not like he's not physically capable as a back up option.

This would work too! Matter of fact that's a better idea than having White fill in at 6. Having said that White should 100% be in over both Gomez and Dunk. He's just more versatile, a better footballer technically, and has a flair for shit-housery that could be really really useful.

The disrespect that Gomez gets is frightening. The guy has been a member of a Liverpool team that has been in the top 3 of the PL for most of the season. He's played as a right back, left back and centre back, and hardly put a foot wrong. Even had a game as a 6! He's not the best in class at any of the positions, but his versatility and consistency make him an absolute "must be on the plane" for me.

In football terms it is objectively insane not to take him, he shines in a defence that contains the best defender on the face of the planet, and his work ethic is off the charts when there's absolutely no reason it should be. When all your defenders are done at the end of the tournament (which has been the case for the last at least 4 major England tournaments) and you want somebody solid you can put in there and you don't have Joe Gomez ready and raring to go, that's the point you realise you've made a mistake.

He is undoubtedly a player who can excel along the backline and that's where he should, and will, play. No, he's not England's number 6. And I never said he is. Both Chilwell and Shaw have been in and out of their languishing teams, while Gomez has actually been picked over the best LB in the league Robertson a few times. Regardless, Gomez has already been picked by Southgate, and I'm not sure I like that anyway.

He doesn't offer anywhere near as much going forward as Chilwell or Shaw who whilst both injury prone are still good LBs.

Don’t mean to sound biased as I’m a Villa fan but Ezri Konsa is so so underrated. His stats overall are better than the large majority of centre backs in Europe’s top 5 leagues this season let alone just other English centre backs. Being a Villa fan I’ve watched his consistency for years now he barely ever puts a foot wrong for us & he’s seemed to grow into a good leader too especially since Mings got injured & we needed someone to keep that leadership at the back. He can comfortably play at right back too as he’s shown this season from playing a decent amount of games there. He has to be in the squad for me.

The beauty of shaw and Trent in the back 4 is that shaw can slot into a back three nicely and offer pace against a counter and let TAA roam into midfield. I think it’s the key against some bigger teams we’ll come across and to push players like Bellingham up the field with kane

Curious to know what your starting midfield 3 would be with your squad? I don't think it's gonna be particularly balanced with foden or madison partnering bellingham and starting gallagher just isn't going to win a euros. Unless trents in midfield. I think jones in for gallagher provides a better option as someone who can go both ways

Elliot doesn't get close. There are simply better or more on form players than him currently inhis position. Jones should go over Henderson and Philips but I think the likes of Barkley and Gallagher have also been having really good seasons and arguably better than Jones.

Barkley has carried a poor Luton team and been their best player by far. Jones has also had a good season but those two, particularly Gallagher have had slightly better seasons.

You pick an 8 out of JWP Gallagher Jones, use your preferred bias to pick a 4th CB, and let shaw and chilwell race through the terminal on crutches 🩼 to decide who goes and who stays. Pickford. Ramsdale, Pope Walker. Trent Stones. Konsa Colwill. White Shaw. Tino Rice. Mainoo JWP. Gallagher Bellingham. Maddison Saka. Palmer Kane. Watkins Foden. Grealish Gordon and Chilwell are the only players i'd try to get in, if they were fit.

@@ukevo To be honest in a midfield of Rice and Bellingham I just want someone who will enable others, be calm, and be another leader on the pitch to help direct a fairly youthful team. For me i'm not sure i'd trust the erratic nature of gallagher in a high stakes/intensity match. I also like Jones a lot but I personally don't know if i've seen him sacrifice in the same way jwp does. Interested as to who you'd want us to take for that 8 spot as you said, it's one of the only spots that I think doesn't pick itself.

Jones does sacrifice for Liverpool and plays connecting/defensive role a lot. He is the one of the best dribblers/ ball keepers among these midfielders. England has to beat France to win Euro, so you guys need to pick players who can defend Mbappé.

But that's just the "what would i do" fantasy, not my prediction on what is Southgate gonna do.

A man city-style system plays to England's attacking strengths. 3 at the back with an inverted full back playing a duel role. Pickford, Walker, Stones, Gomes, B white, Rice, foden, Bellingham, Maddison, Saka, Kane. Ben white, Stones or Trent could slot in as the inverted full back . Every one of those players is on good form and plays regularly for a top four team (apart from Pickford).

A back 3 is what I keep going to. For example: Walker, Stones, Colwill, Trent, Trippier, Rice, Bellingham, Foden, Saka, Kane. In transition Bellingham will maraud forward and Stones can move up to midfield with Rice. Trent would have a lot of attacking freedom and could go absolutely anywhere on the pitch because Walker can cover him and if not Walker you have Ben White, two perfect CB/RB hybrids. Colwill can cover the left but I'd also throw in Shaw for that position too, anytime he played as a CB last season he was excellent and that was even in a 2-man pairing, in a 3-man he'd be even better. The two attacking mids/wide attackers could be any of Saka, Palmer, Foden, Grealish, Gordon or Maddison. Even Watkins could play there as a support striker. Lots of defensive solidity that gives attackers more freedom to attack. This is what actually wins tournaments. Look at Spain 2010 and Brazil 2002 for great examples Love the video as always James

There are way better players than Henderson, Maguire, Sterling and Rashford available for selection, but after using stats to justify how clinical certain players are, how can you brush over how wasteful players like rashford have been, and how many mistakes maguire makes on a regular basis. Even though he isn’t the best we have on offer, I would argue that Jamal Lacelles (or Lewis Dunk) gives that leadership quality instead of maguire and imo is better than him (also has the capability in the air that people say maguire is good for).

Genuinely sad football attracts so many people who just don’t get the sport. Did you watch city last season? He was one of their most played players towards the business end of the season and they won a treble. Not every winger is a ronaldo or a salah, and not every players needs to be a ‘can you win a game on their own’ type. maybe when you’re a bit older you’ll understand that there’s more to football than that. Though perhaps you do know more than pep and mourinho (two managers who actually think grealish is quite good, but what do they know?)

Kobbie is a diamond and I wish ETH would play him deeper for us than he currently is. He’s only 18 so obviously he does struggle a little with physicality when it’s put on him. If you play him as a single pivot, he needs that protective foil against a physical team from an inverted FB or a CB

The answer to all the 'he has to play, we have to find a way to get him in the team' questions is to go false 9 and bench Kane. Nobody wants to say it. I will. The problem we have always had against the best teams is we don't control games. We could do it with the extra body in midfield. Back four, then Rice, Trent, Bellingham, Saka, Grealish and Foden ahead. It works. We could be amazing.
