@@maxzett7900GRE shines if you’re using an ultra wide 34inch 1440p monitor. The 256bit memory bus gives the GRE an advantage over the 6800XT & 4070.

@@AremisaliveI think he used the one(not the numbers, just the GPU) that launched before, Gamers Nexus says, the boost clocks have been increased for the global launch(by AIBs).

@@Histaogram Maybe because looking at Gamers Nexus benchmarks, the GRE is an improvement almost everywhere. This data seems off to me too. It somehow looks similar to the data we've seen at the GRE launch last year.

memory bus also cut. rdna 3 insanely memory and cache dependent. with my 7900xtx memory oc gives me much more than undervolt and increasing power up to 415w. i d really like 2 see how xtx would be with 128 mb cache

AMD is like "Monkey see monkey do" all this generation and they get lower points then Nvidia because they not being innovative and doing their own way. Just an Nvidia copycat attempts smh they need to do better. This card is almost no different than Nvidia 4080 super was from the 4080 vanilla

Probably an inherent characteristic of the chiplet design. Amd CPUs ever since Ryzen came out have had shittons of cache relative to their intel counterparts at any point in time to make up for latency costs of splitting the cores up. It's probably the same for the GPUs, hence more cache leading to such great performance gains. Watch and release the 7900xtx3d lol.@@VanyaYlianov

Here in Poland you can buy AsRock 7900xt for less than a 7900GRE and most 7900xt models for about 30-50$ more, so yeah, thats all folks

Using reference model here was a big mistake. Other reviews used new partner models and show 10% and more uplift over 7800XT.

I was planning to get a 6950XT, but I can already hear the fans spinning and annoying me while I'm trying to game. My reference RTX 3080 is already bad enough. The last thing I want is an even higher power draw.

@@selohcin well, i guess it depends on how sensitive you are to the noise, for what it's worth, with the stock fan curve i'm not bothered by the fan noise. If i may ask, why do you want to go from a 3080 to a 6950xt? Isn't the performance difference fairly minimal between those two?

@@juipeltje I hate the fact that I'm already running out of VRAM on the 3080. It's not exactly bad, but it's an issue. Hogwarts Legacy, Ratchet and Clank, and Resident Evil 4 all need more than 10GB of VRAM at 1440p.

The Gamer's Nexus review had the GRE consistently 10 to 13% faster than the 7800xt in raster performance in their tests. I wonder if that's because of the difference in test bench. Gamer's Nexus used a 12700KF for their review.

@@19alive But in theory that'd put them closer in the GN's test bench, not the other way around. HUB's data are a bit off. Maybe it's because it's tested with the reference model.

Daniel Owen's tests also show 10-15% performance uplift from 7800xt and he is testing on 7800X3D. I can only assume that Steve tested the old reference card, not the new AIB cards with (presumably) lifted power limits and better cooling. Seems like GREs are starving for more power and the reference 260W power limit significantly limits it's performance, which is not the case with AIB's. Daniel Owen tested Powercolor Hellhound.

AMD just follow their deal with NVIDIA, NVIDIA focused on deep-learning and AI, AMD focus on gaming console , don't compete to each other, so they don't need push performance improvement between GPU generations too fast

It's not a new GPU though. That is an OEM cut down 7900 XT. In fact I don't really want to buy it as even if RT perfs are better than the 7800 XT, I would never buy an AMD GPU for RT. Buying a 7900XT/7900XTX is better for that nonetheless. So I couldn't think about buying a product that isn't future proof enough where 16 GB of VRAM couldn't be enough sooner than we think.

Just picked up a 6800XT on ebay for $300 plus ship. Looking at these charts, paying $250 plus tax for ...ten frames per second, I think I'll be sticking with the 6800XT. I still get hardware encoding with the last generation of AMD cards, that's good enough for me!

Steve tested reference model perhaps? I know DF and Daniel Owen tested AIB's models and they probably have boosted clocks and lifted power limits (Seems like the reference GRE is struggling with 260W power limit).

Games and model used. they all use SAM or Resizeble BAR in there tests, wich can hurt performance in some games but realy benefit in others and HuB used a reference card for tests wich can also lead to a smal decline in performace. thats why you need to watch multiple tests, they test different games and so you can get a compleate picture of a product...as long as they dont start swapping out games for each test to make one product look better as the other...

I haven’t watched the other ones yet but Steve down-clocked the AIBs to AMD’s standard reference model, and it’s possible the other reviewers did not. The configuration of this thing to me suggests it could have a decent bit more OC wiggle room than most other 7000-series cards, and the AIBs may have already utilized some of this untapped headroom in the OCs of their differing models. I’d have to look at how the clocks compare relative to whatever disparities we see in the 7800XT models and others. I’m just waking up and seeing this for the first time as I type.

7900xt owner here GRE does not make sense in term of branding is GRE worse? Why not naming it just "7900" without XT? In my opinion AMD should have 3 tiers: GRE - "lite" version "no-xt" - normal version "xt" - fancy version and then maybe "xtx" for the top of the top of the generation

Bit of a difference between the two Steve's I normally trust, G/Nexus finding a bigger gap between the 7800 +7900GRE. Either way I am not regretting my 7800XT purchase. On release week! But still think their results should be closer. Though the game suite is slightly different and I think GN tested a partner model at stock clocks?

Maybe GN benched a AIB model (while HUB benched the reference one acc to the video?), judging by the reviews on techpowerup the AIB models have higher power limits (how much depends on model) than the oem reference models which could have some impact on performance.

Just watched the Digital Foundry review of the GRE before this one. It was far generally a fair bit faster than the 7800XT and their cost per frame showed its the best value of the 7800XT, GRE, 4070 and 4070Super. By some margin making the 7800XT the worse option and the 4070 a near pointless option because it was that much faster in Raster and trades blows in RT besides the nvidia titles which it gets a bit of a big loss Quite a big difference in results Edit: Just watched through some of GN video, GRE matches the Super closely in Raster and is about halfway between the 7900XT and 7800XT

Steve wtf? One of the only differences is the fact that partner models were released (reference is steve from HUB in beginning of this video). This is especially important for this card because of its low clock speed, (as explained by Steve from GamersNexus). Therefore, lets go ahead and test the exact same old model I already tested! Shockingly it is the same results! *edit- i apologize for being so fiesty and sarcastic, this obviously wasnt the best way to ask this question. I only edited my bad punctuation from my original comment, not the words. My response to steve's comment on this thread is a more betterer worded rant.

Its so odd that they also include 18gbps memory. That limits it performance even more compared to the 7800 XT. The extra cores cannot do a lot with that current bandwidth. So its wasting Navi 31 Silicon to deliver Navi 32 performance. With faster memory it could have been more interesting efficency wise.

They can't cannibalize 7900XT sales and they can still make money from rejected Navi 31 silicon. It makes sense from that angle, but it doesn't look good to consumers. Then again, most of GPUs of this generation (7000 series/40 series) haven't made much sense outside of the 4090 being a huge jump.

It's more like a cut down and undervolted 6950XT (same CU, same SU, same TMU, same memory, bus and bandwith. Lower clockspeeds, lower cache, lower ROP) And same Die size. And it is typical that the china exclusive models are tuned and cut down versions of other cards. 6750GRE 10 and 12GB are just 6700 and 6700XT with new names. This one is a Navi 31 slapped on a Navi 21 card and cut it down a bit.

AMD only makes Navi 31 chips aka 7900XTX and whatever defective chips come from that will become stock for the 7900 XT and GRE. It wouldn't make any sense to stop 7900XT when it makes them more money than a 7900GRE

Interesting... I watched Steve's (GN) review and testing of this card. And his card landed smack in the middle between 7800XT and 7900 ... 13% or so slower than the 7900xt and about 7-10% faster than 7800xt.

We're testing reference clock speeds. Testing OC GRE models against a stock 7800 XT for example is misleading in my opinion.

You want to test it against an OC 7800 XT if that's the case, the Nitro+ version of the 7800 XT is around 5% faster for example. So testing the GRE Nitro+ against a reference spec 7800 XT is misleading IMO.

And majority of people are going to be buying a partner model, not a reference. So it would have been nice to see what we’d actually get realistically buying a card off the shelf

This is really weird - I've watched both Steve (GN) and Digital Foundry reviews, and they report very different numbers. The card lacks in RT of course, but in pure rasterisation performace, it's way faster than 7800XT and it beats the 4070 Super most of the time. Now I wouldn't dare to bash the results of your testing, but since I consider you 3 the most accurate channels, and both have quite different results, I do wonder what caused it.

We're testing reference clock speeds. Testing OC GRE models against a stock 7800 XT for example is misleading in my opinion.

However, if I can only get my hands on RX 7900GRE OC models, which are only about 30-35USD more expensive than RX 7800XT and they're still around 40-50 USD cheaper than RTX 4070 Super.. is it a reasonable alternative to the 4070 Super? I'm planning to upgrade this year, but the prices here (Czech republic) are around 720 USD for a 4070 Super unfortunately..

Seems like Gamer Nexus results are different? Dying Light 2 might be comparable it's 51(AMD) vs 55(Nv) FPS here and 57.7(AMD) vs 56(Nv) at GN. And it seems the whole suite sees a similar trend (: Drivers? Specific card model?

I wonder why they're bothering to give the customer a bunch of extra silicon but then clocking it way slower and limiting it to the exact same TDP so they barely get any benefit from it, and that's not to mention the slow VRAM.

In this case, because those are the dies from the "defective or underperforming" bin, that couldn't hit the specs of becoming a 7900XT. Some of those land there because of defects, but others also because they can't clock as high. That's why it makes sense to do this - for AMD at least.

i think that the avg test result from HuB is the worst case to expect, since many other tests (GN, Digital foundry...) show, that this card is better then in the HuB test, with a 8-13% gap between the GRE and the 7800xt

Even the test results paint a very different picture. Hmm... HUB's 7900GRE is slightly better than 7800XT, DF's 7900GRE basically completely destroys 7800XT (more than 10-15% performance uplift from 7800XT in every test). I hate when there is so much discrepancy between reviews.

Seems like the reference 7900GRE is starving for power, while partners' models lift the power limits which allows the cards to breeze a bit more (also much better cooling). Daniel Owen's tests also show 10-15% uplift in many games and he used Powercolor Hellhound.

since power limit for this card is low you can try some mild overclocking at least up to 300W. cooling system should be pretty fine with it. performance gains could be better than with any card from 7000 series

I will raise the same suggestion as I did in the GN video, could you try and do some overclocking and raising the powelimit (modded bios needed?). It definitivly seems like this is a card that has been locked down to land between the 7900XT and 7800XT. Perhaps there is more performance to be extracted if memory or power limits can be tweaked?

I for a second thought you said the MCD has fewer cores but it was that each MCD is connected to fewer cores for the 7800 XT compared to 7900 GRE (as in the GCD for 7900 GRE has more cores than the GCD for 7800 XT).

I appreciate you doing all the testing but I am a little bit confused. I watched like three other videos today and they all seem to have results that show the 4070 super not doing so good against the 7900 GRE. I trust your testing but I wonder what you're doing differently that they are doing or visa/versa. Trying to decide on what GPU to buy these days is quite the headache.

As you can see here (www.techpowerup.com/review/sapphire-radeon-rx-7900-gre-pure/31.html) the Pulse GRE 12% faster than the base model 7800 XT on average at 1440p. The OC 7800 XT's are 4-5% faster, so if you compare an OC 7800 XT to the AIB GRE's which overclock higher than the reference model, it's around 7% based on the TPU numbers. We found between 5-10% depending on settings when comparing base specs.

I got the 7900gre HELLHOUND after watching many many videos. I'm upgrading from a 2070 8gb, so for me, it's a great upgrade. I went from a 9000 1440p score in 3d Mark to a 19200+ at 1440p. 5900x, 64gb DDR4, 990PRO 2TB,Win10. The temperature performance in the hellhound is fantastic.

I think this model has really good OC capability. I think the selling point since was an OC; its on a same die as 7900 XT and XTX with great headroom to OC. Even though i dont understand why tightening the bandwidth was a thing on this model.

I would have liked to see an individual break down of all of the partner models rather then just the reference model as they tend to preform the worst in most areas, but so long as all other models on the chart are also reference models then it still gives you a sense of the base raw performance compared to what else is out there. I would say even at $50 more it seems to always preform as well as if not better then the 7800xt so if you are still on an older card or dont have a PC at all and that $500 to $600 range is your budget for your GPU (with $600 being a hard cap) it would still not be a bad choice. Especially if you think of it like a 7850xt rather then watered down 7900xt. Though if you can do $600 and some change then yes a 4070 super would be the better option, but if you can only do $600 if that includes the tax then a 7800xt or 7900gre is likely going to be your better choice depending on which partner you are going with for the card as both are going to be better then a 4070 non super or very similar at least. The whole market is in a weird pricing state right now that does not make a lot of sense to me. So many cards from both AMD and Nvidia fighting for that $500 to $600 range and barely stepping around each other back and forth but also unable to step on their own toes with pricing. Like the GRE would be a great option if it came in at $500 but the 7800xt is already there and it is too early to drop the price on that to $450 and that would also mean the 7700xt would have to drop to like $400 which would create a cascading ripple in their card prices that they just cant do yet. However, the partner cards are on average $20 to $100 more then the reference too so that brings them up to the same price as a tier up or matching the Nvidia prices making them no longer an option of price but just performance and going with Nvidia (if you are willing to give them money and just have to have RT; which at this time I am not) I hope the next generation on both sides is a bit more obvious and simple to understand with proper price/performance brackets that make sense, but I wont be holding my breath either.

I just watched Digital Foundry's review of the GRE. Their review highlights a significant increase in rast performance over the 7800 XT, making it a more compelling product. Leadbetter also discusses normalization of cost-per-frame analysis. While I like Digital Foundry, I think your tests are more reliable due to using more comprehensive tests (Dig. Foundry usually tests only four or five games). That said, I think R. Leadbetter from Digital Foundry makes an interesting point about normalizing cost-per-frame. Do you think normalizing cost per frame would help?

Normalizing what? I´m not buying oranges from supermaket? For me it´s important if I can lock FPS @90/120/144/165FPS @ x+\-50$ price range. I couldn´t care less if it gives me 5-20% more FPS if it still gives me +3FPS and locks me at the same FPS as it is the case with 6800XT vs 7800XT vs 7900XT- no advancement at all. Who the actual.... came out with the cost per frame data? Better solution would be make Cat 1-3: 1)45FPS range, 2)60FPS range, 3) 90FPS range, and then "I don´t care how much the new GPU costs bc Im buying it anyways"

They should have really made a 7900GTO, sporting 19.5 or 20gbps memory but with the same 256bit Navi31 GPU and PCB. Not only that would have prevented the weird rabbit naming for the international market, but this would actually fill the gap between the 7800Xt and 7900XT. Btw, there are no Cores in the MCD, those are for memory and cache only. It is the GCD which has the cores and the GRE has the least cores activated out of all N31 GPUs.
