Nordic Semiconductor - Bluetooth 5 Long Range Test with nRF52840

The nRF52840 SoC is high-end multi-protocol SoC supporting Bluetooth 5/ANT/ 802.15.4/ 2.4GHz proprietary. The video focuses on the improved range achieved by the higher output power combined with the new Bluetooth 5 Long Range mode. In the video we are using the nRF52840 SoC mounted on the nRF52840 Preview DK (now replaced by the nRF52840 DK).

Amazing result, Im using nrf52840 in custom board, as I can see the weather is cold and snowy. The range of the 2.4 Ghz signal decrease when is the high humidity, the day of the test the humidity was high? (over 85%) Have you had the test in rainy day? what do you think could decrease the distance in rainy day? thanks in advance!!!

which antenna could i attach to my nrf52840 board. I did not found correct connector for connecting an antenna and testing BLE Codec PHY...

The DK already has an onboard PCB antenna so you won't need to connect one to use Coded PHY here as there are no HW requirements for Coded PHY antennas specifically. You can use our board guidelines app note for HW design tips to create you own: infocenter.nordicsemi.com/pdf/nan_040.pdf

Can this be used to transfer voice data between 2 motorcycles on the run about 1km range?

The Bluetooth Long Range mode is not very well suited for audio data, since the data rate is quite limited. An alternative to the LR mode is to use a FEM (front end module) to boost the output power of the device, then you should be able to achieve a km of range if you have line of sight, without having to sacrifice too much data rate.

so the nRF52840 reach nearly 700 meters using the onboard PDK antenna ? no other external antenna was added ? and what about the power consumption between the nrf52832 and nrf52840 ?

Onboard antenna, yes. no external antenna added. Power consumption is very similar, unless the 8dBm output power mode is used in the nRF52840. Indoor range depends on the construction, but up to 50m is realistic in most scenarios.

No, we did not as water absorbs radio signals, in particular those in the microwave range, so the range will be extremely short. A couple of centimetres tops.

Hello, I am currently working on this nRF52840-DK board. I want to work with the NFC/RFID reader. I found that Nordic supportX-NUCLEO-NFC05A1 for the nRF52840. Unfortunately, this NFC reader is out of stock in most of vendors. Could Nordic please give me some suggestions for an external reader which is compatible with nRF52840 and with nordic library NFC Reader ST25R3911B. Thanks

Hello, we haven't tested the sample with any other shields unfortunately. You could try the X-NUCLEO-NFC08A1 which uses the same chipset and is widely available, but since it hasn't been tested internally there is no guarantee it will work.

No, our SoCs does not have Wi-Fi onboard. We've just started working with the technology.

The display in the video was built in-house for demos and is unfortunately not for sale, but since our development kits follow the Arduino form factor you can buy an Arduino LCD or OLED shield instead.

Can I expect greater than 1 KM with external antenna?

That would depend on the antenna, but 1KM line of sight range should not be a problem if it is designed properly.
