On building your dream (floating) home-studio, the Dutch way

When architect Julius Taminiau and his girlfriend needed more space for their growing family, they left their tiny Amsterdam flat and bought what was the best deal in town at the time, an old houseboat in a floating community. They decided to sell the boat (for 1 euro) to make way for their dream houseboat.
To achieve two full floors within the five-meter height limit set by the docks, Taminiau built the lower rooms partially-submerged. With a nod to Japanese design, Taminiau relied on the proportions of a tatami mat to layout the rooms, paying attention to weight distribution so the home would afloat. The boat was built 100 kilometers away (on water) and sailed to its moorings.
Nearly one half of the home is devoted to Taminiau’s office and an independent studio complete with kitchen, bathroom and self-crafted transforming couch bed that can be rented out for extra income. The middle of the boat is dedicated to kids’ bedrooms and toilets and the remaining side houses the parents’ bedroom and the kitchen and living room above it.
The floating community where the family is moored is very dense and Taminiau thinks it could be a solution for growing cities to add housing stock. He likes being close to his neighbors and says it’s a real “floating village”.

@eliseumds

@@AtomicMoviess I agree with the insane taxes, that's the reason I wouldn't move there. I used to live in Berlin and half of my income was gone, cost of health insurance was ridiculous and there were very few euros left to invest, even though I was a high-income person. Crazy stuff. Life changed after moving to Sydney. Later on, even more, when I set up a company in Brazil paying 9-10% and started a nomad life. But what's the problem with the government? Seems pretty reasonable compared to most other places. And what do people judge you on the most?
@AtomicMoviess
@AtomicMoviess 3 роки тому
Eliseu Monar dos Santos by goverment i mean the laws they make and how they do not fix it. Look up “gedoogsbeleid” for exempel or we have the best roads in the whole world way better then the autobahn but we only allowed to drive 100km/u (60miles), its just so cricked

It's nice and may be cheap, but it's cheap to the upper class because it's still pretty expensive to most people. The 'wateryuppies' as he calls them are people who actually can afford to buy a house in the center of Amsterdam if they wanted to. Anyone below the upper class is slowly moving out of Amsterdam (further away than this houseboat yard) and this will become a problem (actually already is) in the future.
@treesagreen4191
@treesagreen4191 5 років тому
Marinus I hunk this is true of all cities. What used to be housing for the workers becomes affordable homes for the middle class. Then it spreads out, so that people go out to the country and buy what used to be farm workers houses or peasant cottages. Those on low incomes struggle to stay in the areas they were born in, as they pushed out by rising property prices. Not sure how it will ever change.
@kickass1179

I agree, this is a global problem. I don't understand why something as primitive as SHELTER is so hard to attain!? Shelter, food and water should be the basics for every human, and yet, shelter seems to be a life-time achievement which you get at the end of your life, then you die and leave it for your kids or something...
@treesagreen4191

@MarinusMakesStuff
@MarinusMakesStuff 5 років тому
Hi C O, the place didn't cost 1 euro, they bought the ship for a higher price including the spot (you have to pay for the spot separately). They decided to sell the ship they bought for 1 euro so they could build a new, and more expensive home in the spot they bought. Get it? :) They just had to get rid of the home that they bought to also get the spot that's why they sold it for a symbolic price.

Love this one Kirsten. The location, the minimalism and the light. The only thing that would take some getting used to is the relative lack of privacy. Though on the flip side there is also something very appealing of having a tight knit community that looks out for one another. Something that I feel seems to be disappearing.

Such a great design for a house. I like how he designed a cool spaced based on being in the water. However, even if it was on land it'd be a cool design. I would have liked to see / hear more of the roof. How'd they deal with rain / water run off? The roof looks great, but it also looks like a tub that would fill with water and run the stairs.

I think it becomes more problematic in/around Amsterdam to buy and live affordable. Many of my friends who bought houses 5 years ago are now seeking outside of Amsterdam because over the years they have gained a family. Prices are insane in downtown. I think the solution of more floating house boats is something to consider.

This a great film a lovely family and a beautiful space; but I would like some facts and figures. How much for the mooring? Is it rented/owned/leased etc How much to build the house, to run it, to maintain it? How are domestic taxes calculated? What building regulations other than height? Is it tidal? Is it sea/estuary/river/canal? What safeguards of tenure? How do you access dry land? Is it safe for the kids? Is it a "gated" community or open to Joe Public ?.Is it a concrete hull? Does it have to come out of the water for mantainence? etc...I'll try your website if I may! Thanks.
