It seems to be alternating focus, the promise covers the cooperation and mixing of multiple nations, the search is character focused for Zuko, The Rift shows the advances of the world and potentially the lack of spirit presence till later on, smoke and shadow more Zuko and arguably the Fire nation foreign policy in Korra, here shows how the southern water tribe reached the point it was in Korra. I think the next one is also Korra related with the bender vs non bender stuff which seems like something that would’ve come to a head many avatars ago considering how long bending has been around
@chimera981811 місяців тому

@@chimera9818 weird, we have shown that non benders can fight on equal footing to benders with the pirates being fairly competent
@rolay773011 місяців тому
@@Xeno-The-Wanderer There is still a huge imbalance. Benders have several massive advantages, aside from literally being able to shoot fire or throw literal tonnes of stone. Non-benders are also physically weaker while being much more prone to injury. Canonically, a water bender can be thrown through a rock wall and hit with stones that would kill a regular person. The spiritual energy is literally helping protect them. It is also the reason they live longer than non-benders, with the more proficient benders living much longer, sometimes living hundreds of years, such as the earthbender that trained Kyoshi. A non-bender "can" fight back. But they are at a disadvantage even in a hand-to-hand fight with no bending. So I guess fighting a bender is like fighting someone with miner super strength and miner super toughness. They might not be immune to bullets, but they can definitely take more than a regular person.

@NexeL_NKC11 місяців тому
This could just be me but I feel like the reason things felt pretty empty was because of animation constraints, like the team didn't want to animate hundreds to thousands of individual unique looking background NPCs in most shots of the show until S3. This comic feels much more engaging, and seems to be really fleshed out, compared to the previous comics. The conflict is both interesting and feels believable. The firelord insurrectionist stuff from the previous comic felt a little pointless imo, but here both sides have valid points which is pretty crucial for a civil war scenario. Also the initial dream panels with Kaya's artwork not changing was so well done. Lookin forward to the next one!
@bthsr711311 місяців тому
I wouldn't call the insurrectionist stuff entirely pointless, but I do feel having more focus on genuine rebellion against Zuko than Azula putting the fear of lost history into Mai's dad would carry MORE weight. After all, it's been a century since the Fire Nation was at peace with its neighbors, longer since real peace. Of course Zuko is going to have to quash rebellions who want the war to resume. And such things would be independent of/go beyond the colony issue. They'd spent 100 years fighting and were on the presumed brink of final victory, and then Zuko just calls an end to it. After all that was invested.

Honestly, I buy the city expansion. They have all these colonists from the North Pole, plus the men returning from war & a massive war economy in the Earth Kingdom & Fire Nation which would be eager to sell to a new market. I know the stuff with how suddenly urbanized the southern water tribe is, feels like a major plot hole, but I do actually have a headcannon that helps it a lot, the southern water tribe shown in the show was just one of dozens of small communities throughout the southpole, I feel like that kinda makes more sense then there only being one village on an entire continent anyways. but also jf you go with it you can actually make a real world parallel with with what happened to many of the Indigenous people of Greenland. During a time where they feared losing control of it to another nation Denmark forced the entire populations of hundreds of villages and large swaths of hundreds more to gather in its capital city Nuuk and turn it into a proper settlement they could control much easier then the frozen wilds. The same thing could perhaps be said about the northern water tribe, of the 3 nations in the world they are clearly the least powerful and although the world is generally at peace, I can absolutely see them wishing to modernize the south in the hopes it allows their people have to have more influence in the world. And especially considering what their shown to do in Kora I think them even just incentivising the people to abandon their old homes and gather here makes a lot of sense

It's wild to see them in their full snow gear after so long. I mean, we saw what the village used to be a lot more than when Aang found it, thanks to Hama's memories, so it's cool to see the place not one attack or bad month of hunting away from being erased. This is actual civilization and no longer mere subsistence living while all the men are off making war. It's been built up better than before. So long as the remaining villagers were respected and given good homes, I call this a major win. Darn right these kids deserve recognition! If the the new town knew the full scope, they'd have readied a parade! Well, that little village from the first couple episodes wasn't big enough to contribute more than one of Hakoda's ships, so this tracks. And frankly, a lot of shows have to compact locations or limit how much we see to avoid wasting budget. The difference between blue and light purple is soft, but useful. I am intrigued by the idea of exploring construction style bending more. Especially in a time of reconstruction and new growth. II mean, Toph made earth tents regularly, but those were pretty rough things. Seeing how benders who build instead of beat down could be very interesting. Again, that Snowmobile feels like they're advancing too fast. Not as bad as the forklift that seemed internally the same as a modern engine, but this is still a bit much. Maybe have it built around an oversized engine that would be seen as inefficient by LOK? Okay, the neck height triggering wire is a neat touch. Okay, trying to emulate the dominant powers of the war is actually an understandable piece of logic, and history would agree that centralized leadership allows for stronger nations. And the faults in this guy's thinking about how the north is a negative influence are understandable in his wrong conclusions. We can reason out that one of the reasons why the Northern Water Tribe was doing so well was a unified defensive posture while the Southern Tribes periodically bled themselves of manpower they couldn't afford to lose in numbers too small to change things, but he's not naturally going to see it that way. The rat metaphor feels more like what an egotistical Northern Water Tribe would say to dissuade aid to the Southern Water Tribe. 12:02 Awesome, but how did that get trained before the Polar Bear Dog? I'm guessing these things do VERY poorly outside of their native climate and that keeping them fed on campaign is a hassle, so only a prosperous water tribe can deploy them, and only domestically. And if they can be distracted THIS easily with meat.... well the Fire Nation skews heavier on the meat than the earth kingdom, so these things would be fairly easy to distract... and barring that, setting their fur on fire should work wonders to disrupt Water Tribe cavalry.
@sarasamaletdin457411 місяців тому
Personally I thought Yea was wearing purple because she was royalty. I don’t think see anyone else in the Northern tribe wear purple in the show. Purple has been associated with royalty since Roman emperors and due to how expensive it is. So I would not have had other Northerns wear it, but it is rather useful way to separate them. And Korra didn’t seem to care to dress its royal Northern characters in purple.

One thing that I really dislike about the Avatar comics is how they made the characters much more 'cartoony' looking. They gave everyone, especially Aang, much larger, rounder eyes. I don't understand why. I feel like the comics would have a better visual look if they simply kept that same style of drawing that the original animation had. It almost feels like they are trying to change actors without telling anyone.
@CalvinKalisto11 місяців тому
I don't disagree, but artstyle always changes is some way or another. It's really a subjective matter on whether their good or not. But I do like your point about it almost feeling like changing actors.
@Dovieandi11 місяців тому
My guess is that they made the change because of the more limited tools that comics have to show characterisation. The animated series had real-time motion, body language, voice acting, paced scenes, and supporting music to personalise the characters. When you lose a lot of that, you need other ways to communicate character intent - big expressive eyes and cartoonish expressions can help with that. Just my two cents though, could be wrong.

something that gets lost with the medium of comics is the martial arts techniques/fighting styles that each bending style emulated that connected with a deeper ideology of lifestyle. With comics it’s hard to get those distinct styles back and we get silly things like snowballs with spikes and frozen toboggans. It makes sense for a world that is increasingly moving away from needing bending at all but it’s something that I’m missing from the original series. In fact it’s more akin to LOK bending attitudes where she just punches air at people, which doesn’t align with airbender techniques/ideology at all. Katara is a water bending master so we should be able to see that in a more nuanced way than her just being the most powerful bender but again the medium of comic books is way harder to depict that than animation.

3:20 okay until now I thought they'd been through a time warp or something. Either way though it's good to finally get confirmation that their one village was not the entire southern water tribe, which is the vibe I got, too. Man, imagine how much it would suck to be born in the Earth Kingdom and, like, your favorite color is blue. Too bad, dude. Green and brown for you.

That line of the North hiding behind their walls feels…true. I can see why Gilak would feel bitter. Wtf North Pole

I like the plot of this one. Tradition VS Modernity The old ways VS New values It still has weight to it with all the, "culture wars" nonsense that we see these days.

Haven't all of theirs in some way or another? Tophs didn't look glassy they looked smokey green.
@jamesmoniz526311 місяців тому
@@llamawalrushybrid Fair, though her's entirely changed color. As well her eye color was grey, a color in the show that was otherwise unique to Anng(which I thought was likely intentional given how her exuberance and choosing to step down from royalty to live as a traveling performer in the circus makes her similar to a air nomad in a sense)
@silverish908111 місяців тому
@@jamesmoniz5263 Suki's eyes also changed from brown to green I guess because she's from the Earth Kingdom? I don't like it, I think it was more interesting when a nation had a common eye colour but it wasn't a hard rule. People on Kyoshi Island in the show were shown to be quite different to the rest of the Earth Kingdom in clothing (most villagers wearing blue actually), culture and appearance and I thought it just made the world feel larger and more interesting.

Who the fuck is the other person in the flashback panel at 1:15, I get that it should be Katara, but that's not Katara even remotely, and she looks like a pretty young kid too, not really what young Katara looks like though, also not really anything we see Katara wear I don't think. Is this some really weird nod to how Aang said "you still are a kid!" to Katara in the scene we're flashing back to? Aang also looks kinda young in the panel too, but that could just be the slightly weird comic book face that he gets sometimes.

I dunno, I always assumed that were was more to the Southern Tribe than the single 2 igloo village we saw. Makes more sense to be spread out, access to more hunting grounds and they're harder for the Fire Nation to efficiently raid since they can't hole up like the North.
@XavionofThera4 місяці тому
Also one tiny village would have just died off from inbreeding.
@derdork323311 місяців тому
They could have easily picked a spot for the southern water tribe central, have that be a capital and leave the smaller villages to be traditional(maybe a little fortified, but not too modernized).
@silverish908111 місяців тому
That could have been/could be (haven't finished the comic so don't know) the resolution. The issue is, this can still create inequality/segregation within the city and doesn't on its own get rid of the cultural conflict.
