Katara here feels similar to what the show achieved in the first episode of Book 3. That scene where Katara was being unreasonably aggressive toward her father and it turned out she was projecting her anger about him having to leave. Here it seems like she's *really* mad that Hakoda is moving on from Kya, and that someone might be "replacing" her dead mother. Which is actually a good take, if they could have landed it. Katara has always been a good vessel for "I know I shouldn't be mad about this, but it still hurts and that's valid" situations.

Many of these comics really are good stories with interesting perspectives as Team Avatar tries to lead the world to healing after a century of war, and many of these conflicts are realistic. Most of them lack the polish of the show, however, and come off as half-baked at best.
@motorwayt-s628
@motorwayt-s628 10 місяців тому
I think one of the issues is that the stories are bottlenecked by each comic having a 75 page limit and only having 3 issues to put a story into. I think the other issue is that Guri Hiro isn’t as strong of a writer as the original show writers or F.C. Yee (the guy who wrote the Kyoshi and Yang Chen novels)
@5BBassist4Christ
@5BBassist4Christ 10 місяців тому
@@motorwayt-s628 That is true. Also, a lot of the subplots of ATLA were interwoven with the main story and each other, whereas these comics follow one story from start to finish. Most likely, many of these events would be overlapping with each other rather than one after another. So Aang and Katara could sympathize with each other as they both experience their culture changing in different ways, and could thereby counsel one another in accepting the way the world is now. Most of the comics do have a similar theme: the Fire Nation colonies are struggling to accept the impacts of a post-war world, the Fire Nation Capitol is struggling to accept the new Fire Lord, the Earth Kingdom is struggling to know how to handle being plunged into a technological era, and the Water Tribe is struggling to accept changes in tradition. The world is changing, and although it is for the better, people are uncomfortable with it. There is a mostly common theme throughout these books, so instead of having it be 4 different instances, they should be more connected.

My theory is that Aang may have independently eventually leveled up his combat and pursuit air bending so much that his powers began being capable of simulating flight in a different and less consistent way than the monks who attained it in the past through separation from earthly attachment. His “independent flight” ability is much less powerful and at his command in the ways we saw it used in Korra, but Aang was already a recognized genius level master air bender at twelve. He got his tattoos for inventing the air scooter. Which isn’t that far off from independent flight. That’s something maybe. You know? I mean yes there’s a ton of inconsistencies in the book. But that is my own kind of personal head canon I guess.

I mean Aang is literally gaining vertical in the first panel of 7:40, and Katara flies all the time in the other comics using that same ice bridge skating move. The biggest example of her flying a long distance and highest altitude is when she flies in the rift. Though I do think Zuko isn't meant to be flying in the comics, Im pretty sure he's meant to be rocket jumping and its just unclear in the panels.

Every other strength/endurance feat she has is when she is pushing or otherwise putting her power INTO the earth in order to either hold it up or act like a wedge to keep it from going down. Here, she is pulling. We even see one hand in front of the other like she is pulling on a rope. I’m just saying, the forceful, stubborn, powerful element of earth is probably more receptive and easier to move when you are pushing and being forceful instead of pulling.

The main thing I like about this trilogy is how it kinda helps to set up how common machines will get in a short time, In time for imbalance. The rift gave us the machines that could replace bending labor, but given they are not as effective and new, I feel, most readers will go it's not going to do that for a good long while. Then comes north and south talking about how the oil in the south pole could power all the machines to make benders obsolete.

my take on the water bending kids is its just the zuko and katara scene in crossroads of destiny where katara and zuko bond over losing their mothers to the fire nation. but in my opinion this scene only worked with the fantastic voice acting from the show and the setpeice. but still I think that the final scene is still really powerful like by comic book standards because in my opinion its really hard to make a tv show as amazing as avatar (in my case my favourite tv show.) translate well into a book.

I think the waterbending kids are meant to represent something about Katara. Like they only start bending openly when Katara recognizes that she misses the place she remembers spending with her mom, and it’s not really about tradition or anything. So like…. their bending represents her mental health? Something like that, I don’t think they’re actual characters in their own right

I don't think you're right about the flying thing, to be honest. Aang did the thing we've seen him do a million times, always in the Avatar state but we've also seen Roku do it normally. He appears to be pushing himself away from solid ground to fly, meaning that when he wants to hover in the air it's vertical, and when he wants to go forward fast he pushes himself away from a wall like we see here. Also, the higher he goes the harder it would be to maintain this column of swirling air so It's only really good for hovering small distances above the ground. I don't think it would work over that huge casm for example. Katara is just making a bridge here, it's connected to the cliff face. If someone broke the base of it that's it she's falling. Of course, the bridge doesn't have to be structurally sound all the way because she can hold it up with bending. But it's not like she can stand on a piece of ice and levitate herself. That would be like standing on a platform and trying to fly by pulling it up with a rope. But Avatar has always been inconsistent with whether Newton's 3rd law applies to bending. In the Kyoshi warriors, Katara pushes away a large amount of water propelling her and Aang backward so that would mean yes. Azula's rocket jump (which is pretty much equivalent to what Zuko did here) and Ozai's Iron Man flying would also imply yes. But they constantly lift large masses of water or rock without applying a strong downward force on themselves or shoot heavy projectiles at high velocities without being pushed in the opposite direction. Well, I guess Earth benders can redirect that force into the ground they're standing on and the same applies for water benders on ice and water benders making huge waves push and pull the water more sideways. Anyway... I don't think we've seen anything too egregious in this comic. But Zuko seems to have reached Azula's level in a technique he previously didn't know at all, which isn't really earned and Aang is just getting more powerful, which is fine since he's a demigod.

I feel like Sokka's and Katara's standpoints were backwards. Sokka was the one who felt like the man of the tribe and the great protector of his village. It would make more sense for him to feel sad at how much it's changed since he was gone. Meanwhile Katara wanted to learn more about bending and it's history and meaning and all that so I feel like she should like the idea of the south moving on from the past where she no longer has to do everyone's laundry. I don't know, that's just me.

I think all of the things that the crew can do that they couldn’t do in the show (I.e. flying and such) are because they have had more time to be better and learn new skills. The show only takes place over the course of a year and they all improved very fast in that time so I could see them doubling that progress and being even more crazy with more time.

maybe~ but they aren't god of bending either. Ozai is probably the strongest bender we see in the show(Baring maybe Jeong Jeong, but thats hard to say because he never showed a mastery over lightning in the show), and even he struggled to fly with a comet boost. (circa when he had to use fire bending as thrusters to fly like a rocket, then fall, then shoot himself back up again)

I mean, yeah, that is the cannon explanation, no one is ever questioning that. It's possible that Toph couldn't hold the bridge very well because the pillars were actively collapsing or breaking apart into smaller pieces which she would have a harder time bending, or the ice that the bridge was anchored into was breaking. Toph may also not been able to "see" through ice, which is where the caves may have been (carved through a glacier). It's not probable, but I guess the chi blockers may have not been familiar with chainmail and not known if it would block chi blocking, and simply assumed it was armor or clothing. This is unlikely though. Also it's possible that the two waterbending children had time to realize that the South was a safe place, and since they almost certainly looked up to Katara, they would have felt comfortable telling/showing her their bending. However I guess it'd be a kind of superficial relationship? I think it's pretty reasonable, but that's just me. You're right about the "flying" and the entire cliché bridge sequence though.
@twocents7509
@twocents7509 2 місяці тому
I think the through-line for the young water bender girls and katara ties into what sokka said a little. He mentions how they are building the south now because it has been destroyed for so long, likewise the south is able to train and have their water benders bend out in the open after years of hiding that part of themselves away. So the two girls water bending shows that this part of their culture is able to come back and be rebuilt, like so many other things. Although, I don’t think all stories always need to be tied together in a nice theme. It’s not like that always happens with congruent events in real life. Although, I can understand someone wanting that in a story if they care a lot about good story structure.
