16:55 That blanket trope is a thing because when you experience something incredibly traumatizing, physically or emotionally, your body pulls in blood from extremeties to your core. It makes you feel cold, and keeping the person feeling warm/safe helps prevent them from going into shock. That's why they're sometimes called Shock Blankets.
@unkindled64107 місяців тому
letting the person snuggle the blanket is less pathetic and embarassing than let it go into fethal position on the floor trying to recover, so it helps they let it out a bit without people just looking at them thinking theyre creepy or insane, in case the event happened somewhere more open. helps calming them down easier too, to prevent further self harm to happen.

Another reason I could see to not take away her bending that I'm surprised they didn't bring up, is that in a way it might further the idea that non-benders are inferior to the supremacists. I could easily see them using the logic that "if being a non-bender doesn't make you inferior, then way is taking someone's bending away a punishment?" Obviously that logic is incredibly faulty for very obvious reasons, but supremacy itself is faulty logic. This whole thing is an incredibly interesting quandary though. If I was in Aang's place I would definitely take her bending away, but I don't think I'd be right to do so. I think what Aang did was probably the correct choice, just not one I think I could've made. We even have the idea that "bending isn't the problem, it's the mindset" reinforced in Legend of Korra. In that, Aang did take away Yakone's bending, but he just ended up teaching it to his sons and further spreading his poisonous ideas. So yeah, great dilemma, and I'm still not 100% sure what to think.

Well I wouldn’t say this works in the context as it does in race. In race there isn’t any difference between European, African, Asian (etc.) except for appearance. It was just a way colonists could exploit and put all their problems on to another person. However with bending there is a difference. Wether you can control an element or not. So, while there isn’t any difference between benders and non-benders morally, there is a physical difference in ability (as benders can, as previously stated, control elements). Taking away a bender’s power is a punishment, because now they can no longer abuse that power for evil. Non-benders have been shown to be able to compete with benders in fight (example being Sokka), so even if benders have an advantage, a decent non-bender could sill beat a bender in a fight. It’s my opinion that it’s not degrading to non-benders to take away a bender’s ability, as it really means taking away that difference in fighting style that allows them to have an advantage in some scenarios.
@AWBs27 місяців тому
Another point also being that a non-bender with a gun could easily level the playing field in a fight against a fire bender. Non-benders have the technological advantage.

I learned a very good explanation for the Dai Li switching to Azula's side in that scene that makes it a fantastic display of Azula's cunning. It relies on two quite reasonable assumptions: 1. The individual Dai Li agents are loyal only to themselves, and act in whatever way will ensure their own safety. 2. Azula is a competent leader to the Dai Li and could feasibly replace Long Feng. If we assume this, then there are two relevant details to explain that scene: Long Feng gives a clear order to actively arrest Azula. Azula gives them no orders. The explanation is simple: In that scene, each Dai Li agent is waiting to see who is going to win the power struggle before acting. No agent is willing to choose until they can be certain that they will be on the winning side. No agent wants to perform Long Feng's order because doing so is risky. But that also makes it a self-fulfilling prophecy. Each agent is waiting for someone else to act. But waiting means not obeying Long Feng's order. And if you do not obey Long Feng's order, it looks like you side with Azula. Thus every agent looks like they side with Azula. This is why Azula gave no orders. If she did, then waiting would no longer mean automatically siding with her. Since she didn't, Azula simply had to get Long Feng to admit defeat, at which point her victory is completed.
@carloguerrero65837 місяців тому
Huh. Very nice thanks for sharing it. Now I wonder if she knew they would be sent to arrest her instead of long feng doing it himself, if it was premeditated or if she didn't, it was improvised in a sense, she concealed that she had no plan while she was looking for the tiniest window of opportunity, then in the same second knew how to exploit it without missing a beat

@darriongeorge51377 місяців тому
I think one of the reasons chi block isn't as widespread is because thanks to bending benders move alot of different way with their bodies, boosted by bending and chi block is close combat while bending is more versatile where it could be used up close or a distance. 5:30 I guess Bumi taking back Omashu on his own could convince her in that aspect. As well as the unique way Ba Sing Se fell almost instantly. With all the generals gone, the king gone, it likely looked like the king used all his power to protect himself and run. Now you have two instances where people could speculate since outside of Team Avatar, nobody could've known about how these things went down, not to mention the intell on the day of black sun. There are still Equalists. Bryan said as much years ago, & they've appeared in both the videogame & the TTRPG. People just bizarrely assume that a season in Korra resolving means the thing it depicts is done forever even though that's literally never been the case in the franchise. Also, Imbalance handles this terribly. The excuse that benders are mad because they can't get factory work makes no sense because they have these skills they can transfer to all manner of positions that nonbenders don't. Toph tries to say that it's not really about the factories, there just isn't enough work in general, but THAT doesn't make sense because the organized crime is exclusively benders. If this is a general lack of work, it should be affecting nonbenders too. Even if they can get more factory jobs, there are more of them to begin with. The whole even split between benders & nonbenders on the business council is contrived, & why do the nonbenders just go along with the plan to put Liling's benders in charge of the new police force? I know Aang endorsed it, but it was still obvious to Lao what she was doing. They just forgot all about their grievances to move the plot along. And Toph makes a great point that her family contains benders, so why is she the only one making that point? Why are there no benders besides Team Avatar who are invested in this conflict or have any misgivings about how Liling's plan would affect their own families? That's what I mean about it being contrived that they just evenly split into teams of bender vs. nonbender. That's not the way their world works anywhere else. You don't have that problem with the Equalists because we know there are a lot of families with few if any benders.
@AegixDrakan7 місяців тому
Oh gooooooods Lileng's motivation is entirely the kind of messed up leaps of logic that IRL bigots use to justify their actions. The writers (and artists) did a PHENOMENAL job on this one. I was really rooting for Ru to get chi-blocking, and honestly I don't blame them for showing just how little that actually helped for a total civilian against a really really good bender. REAL solid work the whole way down.

Nice to have that instant reality check of "yeah sorry, a day of training doesn't make you capable of doing that, especially since unlike the professional guard force, you're not already familiar with martial arts."
@TheLithp7 місяців тому
They really didn't. The problem is they pattern bending supremacy off of racism, but that doesn't make sense because it should be more like sexism or homophobia. The goal shouldn't be to get rid of nonbenders because too many benders come from nonbending bloodlines for that to make sense to them. It should be to enforce the idea of nonbenders as second-class citizens. And while Liling pays some lip service to that, it's clear her primary goal is just to drive out nonbenders altogether. Also, I don't think they appropriately deal with how absolutely crushing that should be for Ru. It's not just that her own mother tried to kill her, it's that even after learning the special trump card of chi-blocking, she was still powerless against a bender. From her point of view, that has to look like all of her mother's barbs about her being weak & useless were just proven right. But they just gloss over that.
@mdsystems44635 місяців тому
Honestly, I like a lot what they did with Liling. It would have been so easy to give her a backstory where she had a traumatic experience with a non-bender but instead she has a completely stupid argument to hate them, because that's just how racist people work: they aren't looking for a valid argument to hate on a specific race, they just want an excuse that justifies the hate they already have in them.

@darlingdannid7 місяців тому
the earth kingdom and fire nation were also full of enforcers who would retaliate if you fought back. like the prisoners in the haru episode, these common folk simply don't have the fighting spirit bc it would've been punished out of them. sokka and katara had isolation on their side (as did toph and suki), toph was noble and wouldn't really have had legal ramifications for her actions, and zuko was a crown prince who'd have likely been above the law as long as he wasn't in direct opposition to his father. so none of them would really have grown up with serious legal penalties for being combative. and aang became combative (still not confrontational though) bc he knew he must be. that doesn't apply to ordinary civilians

To your point on the main characters being untouchable, a lot of anime handle this problem well (One punch man season 1, mob psycho 100, yu yu hakusho) by making the main characters handicapped in some sense (for Toph it would be something like her feet were injured so she can’t see at all) and then that forces characters to come up with creative solutions to the problem. Or the second option is to have there be a conflict that is outside of fighting entirely (for Toph here that could be her parents are watching and she doesn’t want to prove them right that she’s just turned into rough hooligan without their guidence so she can’t really fight back)
@matheus52307 місяців тому
Very happy that Part 3 came out so soon after Part 2! Another fantastic video, and I loved it! Probably my favorite trilogy alongside The Rift as well! Now I really hope you do the one-shot Avatar comics: Katara And The Pirate's Silver, Toph's Metalbending Academy, and Suki Alone. Suki Alone is easily the best, at least regarding drama, though it has a few frustrating contradictions with the show (Kyoshi Island was clearly portrayed in the shown to not be isolationist). Toph Beifong's Metalbending Academy has some very nice scene for Toph's character, and also for her students, but it isn't that substantial in the end. Katara And The Pirate's Silver is the least substantial of them all: a fun side-quest for Katara, and it's always fun to see her being badass as she is, but that's it. Azula In The Spirit Temple, which comes out in the end of this month, promises to be easily the bests of the one-shots!

the taking away bending conundrum is so interesting like would taking away a person's bending take away their power truly? do these people rise to power using their bending or is it just their title as a bender? if you take away the bending of someone who is trying to spread the word that nonbenders are weak would you be helping their point by turning them into a nonbender as a means of handicapping/punishing them? if someone would rather die than be a nonbender are you just pushing them to further radical isolated mindsets that may end up in their own and others destruction?

hey just wanna chime in to say, the "ive been through some shit" blanket isnt so much a trope as an actual thing that emergency medical workers do for survivors who dont need immediate care. its a nice gesture and a good excuse to initiate some human contact just to reassure someone that they are safe now. i think it triggers a part of our brain thats associated with loving parents and warm hugs and things like that. also its always given by someone who calmly asks in a warm tone if the person is ok and then assures them that its all over now and they can calm down. (also if your experience a serious shock, i think your body temperature can drop but dont quote me on that)

I think it might've made more sense if Yaling also had an unusual bending power to match Toph (i.e. Lavabending). Part 2 has Yaling do that weird steam/water thing with the statue, so it'd sorta make sense. Also, Toph encounters a lavabender in the comics anyways, so it might've fit better here. Not only does Yaling counter Toph by staying in the air, but she'd be able to literally melt her metal shields.

The issue of Toph losing the fight is not because she lost _a_ fight, it's because she lost a 1v1 against a completely random earthbender who did _nothing_ during the war. The show would never do that. When Toph lost fights, there was a creative reason beyond skill in her and her opponent's abilities. Afterall, she's 'the greatest earthbender' and she can't be that if she loses to some rando just because it gives Sokka something to do. Having her lose this fight is just lazy writing inviting more and lazier(?) writing.

Since Aang didn't consider taking Liling's Bending as moral even after all the stuff she did, how bad of a dude was Yakone for Aang to take away his? Liling was trying to insight rebellion and subjugate an entire group of people, while from what we've been shown Yakone was just a Mob Boss. Which means either Aang changed his perspective on taking away people's Bending, or Yakone was involved in some REALLY evil stuff. And he did show that with his Bending it was impossible for anybody who isn't the Avatar (or another Bloodbender) to stop him. So whatever he was responsible for must've been seriously up there on the messed up scale! Edit: I understand that taking his Bending away was the only way to contain him, but you have to remember. Toph, her Officers, and Aang all turned up to take this guy down off of witness testimonies alone of him being a Bloodbender. He must've been accused of some serious shenanigans for the Avatar himself to show up just on word alone of the risk of him being a Bloodbender. He'd already been accused of who the Hell knows what, and he's also stated to be the ruler of the underworld of Republic City, one doesn't get a title like that without getting their hands dirty (or in this case his Brain) None of them could've known how powerful he was before hand, otherwise they wouldn't have come at him in the open where he could openly retaliate (He showed that he and no problem going after the Avatar, so the idea that he was afraid of pissing off Aang as to why he went quietly doesn't really track), or have had his trial in a room full of people. Of which Aang was one. Which means that they thought his reputation and his Bloodbending accusations were enough to warrant his arrest. Because they basically had no evidence of him being a Bloodbender besides people's words, and it wasn't until Sokka basically said "Well stranger things have happened" did they actually get him convicted. If their plan was to always take away his Bending due to him being dangerous Aang would've done it immediately after meeting the guy. So they most definitely had to have had some reason to still bring him in, Bloodbender or not. Which led to him trying to escape but getting stopped by Aang. And then he actually escaped and got plastic surgery. TLDR I'm not trying to say is that Bloodbending wasn't the reason he got his Bending taken, what I'm saying is that it could've just been the straw that broke the camels back in terms of his crimes.
@pn22947 місяців тому
“Just a crime boss” leaves a large possibility of crimes that he could’ve committed like hits, drug trafficking, human trafficking, espionage, etc. A plethora of stuff that American TV really wouldn’t be able to get away with.
@meorsomething57327 місяців тому
I haven’t watched Korra so this is just a theory but I think is because blood bending has a lot more quiet usages I mean imagine being able to control someone’s body any time you wanted he could make them harm themselves or others or even mess up their internal organs
@allforone34277 місяців тому
@@pn2294 I know right. Plus you have the fact that he was so casual about controlling dozen of people at a time, and even attempting to kill one with Bloodbending. Which means he's not a rookie when it comes to controlling crowds and killing people with Bloodbending. And since he was so good at controlling such a large number of people at one time, it's safe to assume that there were a few morgues filled with people who got hit with the Sith Lord treatment during his time. And while LOK was never gonna show it, I feel like we can imagine what it would be like if he used the same trick Hama used on those flowers. Except you know............with people. *Yikes*
@Dachusblot7 місяців тому
I think in Yakone's case it was more based on how crazy dangerous his powers were. He could bloodbend an entire room of adults, including the Avatar, while not under a full moon and without even having the use of his hands. He was so overpowered I think Aang decided the only solution was to depower him. I mean, how could you even keep a guy like that in containment?
@allforone34277 місяців тому
@@Dachusblot This reminded me of how in Spectacular Spider-Man they specifically state that Oscorp is the one contracted to build the Prison Cells for Supervillains. Because when you think about, how the actual Hell would you contain Sandman? Bro is one Desert away from becoming an Omega Level Threat. No normal jail on the planet is keeping him contained.

I actually take a different stance on not taking away her bending. I don't believe she is mentally well to have such a power, she wanted to bury her own child with her powers, and Aang refuses to take away her power cause it is a part of her? That's like not taking away Sokka's boomerang if he was captured cause it's apart of his personality. She is still using her power to cause harm. If she was a blood bender then she would have to be locked up in a certain way as to not allow her to blood bend anyone, when Aang could easily just take away her bending, resulting in a safe solution.
@malikpierre-louis33432 місяці тому
I mean it wouldn't stop her mouvement which is what Aang's goal was at the end.
@radiofloyd2359Місяць тому
If Aang took away her power, he would just be proving the bender's prejudices. Aang, as the ultimate bender, would stand above peasant benders, taking away their power as he sees fit, because he's inherently more powerful. There would be an uneasy extremely hierarchical peace, not a real mutual respect between benders and non-benders.
