Lin's title is "Chief of Police" but she is the nation's top law enforcement official and essentially the Republic City equivalent of the FBI Director. I think it's safe to assume that she'd been briefed on The Avatar and has the intuition to connect the dots about a powerful bender that just showed up from the South Pole to dole out street justice. There are also some implied scenes worth considering since we don't know how long Korra was in custody before meeting Lin: that morning the White Lotus discovered the Avatar is missing and would have alerted world leaders about a possible crisis, the officers that responded at the scene took the gang in for questioning and got a statement from the shopkeeper, and Tenzin was informed that the police had her in custody which is how he's able to interrupt the questioning. At that point, I think it would have been more confusing for Lin to not know whom Korra is.

It always pained me to see how much potential was lost in Korra. The main critique I'd have is the fact problems raised by villains seem to disappear once the villain is defeated, except Zaheer who undermines himself. Equalists are never heard of, civil war takes a chill pill and all of Kuvira armies are watching by the wayside how Avatar is taking a vacation with new gf. It makes it so either the villains never had a real point or, if they did, it makes it even worse with all real problems that led to villains rising just disappearing with said villains

Unfortunately an unlikely intended explanation during production. Since the Red Lotus aren't involved, mentioned, or hinted at until that last block of 2 seasons, they almost certainly weren't conceived by the writers when they made episode 1.

One thing to note right away is that Korra is older than all of Tenzin's children. Which means Aang never got to see any of his grandchildren born. Which, idk, is kind of sad. Would have been nice if the eldest one was like a big sister type for Korra who had some memories of Aang and was more integrated into the cast as resident air bender.
@anotherKyle6 місяців тому
i think this wouldve clashed with how much they want to build up tenzen as a character. he grows into the role of mentor which wouldve made a second mentor type character in the airbender faction more difficult to establish without having characters feel redundant. not to be misunderstood, im not the biggest fan of tenzen and would actually have preferred something like your suggestion over him as mentor figure. and korra herself already oozes big sis energy haha
@baradinvaros71596 місяців тому
Had a random realization, was the death of Aang the event that pushed Tenzin and Lin (stubbornly child-free) apart? The sudden realization of being the last one of your culture again, which pushed him to leave her eventually marry his wife and (pro)create the personal army of airbending kids he has? I bet I'm right. So it kinda makes sense the kids are younger than Korra.

The main thing I hope to see you do in this series is just get into it the way you did with Avatar, catching all the fun little details and subtleties while also providing great commentary. I know you can do it!
@happybunny446 місяців тому
I liked this, I've tried to keep up with your videos even after the original series ended, and I try to recommend you to people!

I'm glad this is happening because it would be interesting to see some honest takes on Korra that isn't just "Korra bad" or "underrated". And even some stuff I've never noticed.
@Bionickpunk6 місяців тому
Korra is wasted potential.
@snowjay79846 місяців тому
You might be able to argue that Lin can tell Korra knows more than waterbending by the way she handles herself. Earthbending in particular is very physical, relying on stances and strong movements, which could subtly change the way someone generally walks and moves. It's probably a bit of a stretch, but fun to think about

I’m so glad you finally tackled korra. I always thought korra was a lot more of a mixed bag when it comes to quality but I still think it has its moments that really shine. I think even in it’s bad moments the world avatar built is so strong it leaves me wanting more.

14:52 "Damn, Korra is really strong" THATS WHY KATARA SAID THAT SHE'S STRONG! SHE WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG!

I like the video and want more. Also, it would be a very cool move to shout out the guy who’s already halfway through doing his own overanalysing korra show after you said you wouldn’t, he’s a pretty distinct voice and is in danger of getting steamrolled- I’m looking forwards to seeing you both cover this!

So stoked you're doing this series and I hope we get all 4 seasons! I really appreciate the impartial take on it too. There are some parts of Korra I really didn't connect with, but also some parts (namely season 3) that I thought were truly amazing! Can't wait to see more of this!

I love how positive you were about this first episode. It's easy to get hung up on some of the bad writing decisions that happen later and write off the whole show, but honestly I think you're right, this first episode is pretty dang good all things considered.
@akechi7712 місяці тому
The first thing about Sokka getting better at painting was something I've always thought. I never read the comics before but my "headcannon" is that Sokka went back to his master, the one who taught him swordsmanship and one of his lessons was to look at a scenery for like 2 seconds then paint the entire thing. I imagine that Sokka got so good at this that he just became an excellent painter.
@thothrax56217 місяців тому
Banger jokes in this one, great start to the series! Also I guess Katara has some strange "might makes right" philosophy since she's always the one making these weird comments how strong people are.
@gavinsmith98716 місяців тому
And a big part of her character development is that attitude getting beaten out of her repeatedly.
@RacingSnails646 місяців тому
I doubt she's talking about "power" in the way that DBZ does. I take it as her just meaning skilled. Though I could make the arguement there is a "strength" factor to bending. I mean just look at Katara's bending in episode one versus her fight with Hama under the full moon. The raw *amount* a person can bend may be considered their "strength."

@Hrorwulf6 місяців тому
Things I liked about Korra: At first I found Korra's more direct and action-focused way of handling things unappealing, but it pays back a great deal. In the last Airbender, the world needed an action focused Avatar, Aang was more spiritual and diplomatic, and that was a struggle for him. Korra is an action girl and her world needs a more diplomatic Avatar, which is a struggle for her. I think that contrast is nice. What I didn't like was the retcon of the origin of bending, and the power creep of seasons 2 and 4. Kuvira is an amazing villain, but the mecha is a tad silly. But I feel there're few if any redeemable moments in season 2. Very common opinion, I know.
@tournesol994 місяці тому
While Aang was definitely too diplomatic, he did end up doing a lot of fighting. Whereas Korra does a lot of fighting, but often her companions handle the diplomacy. Which is fine, play to your strengths, but it feels like she develops a lot less in how she approaches challenges. I think the biggest change she experienced in her avatar duties was that she seemed to be less personally invested in the villains, more doing it for the good of others. While Season 2 is a mixed bag, the first few episodes are great with the whole civil war. Pivoting into the origins of the avatar, and a confusing contradictory yin/yang/god/satan motif by the end was the biggest disappointment in the franchise.
@tutumazibuko25103 місяці тому
It's not a retcon
@Hrorwulf3 місяці тому
@@tutumazibuko2510 in ATLA it's established that the benders learn from the primal benders (the moon, the moles, the dragons, and the bisons) and the lion turtles have a previous form of bending (energy bending). In the story of Avatar Wan, the fact that the lion turtles give one of the four types of bending directly overrides the previous knowledge we have, it's a retcon.
@the_last_ballad2 місяці тому
@Hrorwulf except it's not really changing anything. In the flashbacks, people are just throwing the elements around. They manipulate the elements, but they don't have the bending disciplines yet, which they learn from the first benders. Which, to me, makes sense. Learning how to push and pull the tides from the moon and ocean is a lot more understandable if they are starting with the ability to manipulate water, rather than being nonbenders. After all, Yue, Toph, Aang, and the Sun Warriors all refer to their first benders as teachers, with Toph and the Sun warriors directly having their first benders as their bending masters. And energy bending is required to give or take away bending itself, the lion turtles are energy bending to bestow their elements upon humans... Maybe it's because I never _assumed_ the first benders gave the capacity for elemental manipulation(despite never being stated, and multiple refrences distinguishing manipulating an element and actually bending), but learning this didn't change anything about how I understood the Avatar world to work.
@runstarhomer27542 місяці тому
There is no retcon. There is a difference between being given an ability and learning how to use it. They literally show Avatar Wan learning firebending techniques from dragons in that same episode.

I am so excited to watch you go through the whole series. I have a lot of complicated feelings about Korra, but I don't really fall into any full on hate or love camps for it. I actually wish that they were making a live action Korra Netflix show instead of Airbender, that way they could look at what worked and what didn't, and fine tune things about the series as they went.
@God_Is_An_Atheist6 місяців тому
I like the idea, but I think doing a live action version of Korra instead of ATLA would rile people up even more. I even doubt that a live action of ATLA is going to work, even though One Piece was surprisingly good (and that's probably harder to do in live action).

I'm really happy you decided to do Korra. I watched up to season 2 when Korra originally came out and didn't continue with it (not a surprise). But then I heard Janet Varney (Korra's voice actor) in a bunch of podcasts and she was so charming that I went back and watched the final 2 seasons. So because of Janet, I like the show but I think this channel will give me a different appreciation for the show with all the fun nit picks and pointing out fun references.

In reference to Lin not knowing Korra is the Avatar: What about the report from the citizens that watched her fight the thugs? I think Lin would have had a few notes on someone using three different bending types (assuming the notes she was reading weren't blank lol)
