Im guessing Aang let the mixed genders of the acolytes exist for a few reasons: 1) It would be very, very hard to convince enough people to.move to them. On Airbender Island, the men and women are like what, at nost half a mile apart? Makes it easy to continue fratenrizing to a degree. 2) The airbenders could fly between temples and navigate easily enough, but the acolytes would really struggle to mix between temples. It was probably just pure pragmatism.

@@HelenRowe-rg8bx Because they were based on monks, and monks have usually always separated genders. The Airbenders also heavily promoted not having ties, so separating men and women, along with children from parents, makes it so they have fewer attachments.

what really bothers me about korra as a character is that she never bothers to find out exactly why opening the portal would be a good thing. she basically has no idea what the spirit world functions like or what the spirit need, shes literally just following unalaq’s vague instructions without even asking a single question. it would have been great for the viewer too, a chance to get more worldbuilding.
@Warmaster003 місяці тому
cause Korra is never actually interested in doing good to anyone, she just wants to be viewed as a hero, same reason why she never questions if the equalists and people are actually oppressed, she is pretty self serving and centered and never actually changes or gets confronted about it.

@seiyajin81512 місяці тому
That's one of Korra biggest problem and writing problem of the series all together. Korra in the beginning is a great character, there's many characters male and female that are just like her, but they receive development as the series goes and become a better and wiser person, Zuko being a great example. But in Korra case, she never learns her lessons, from season 1 to season 3, she keeps making the same mistakes, treating people close to her horrible and never listening to a advice that is given to her, which makes her cause her own problems and chaos. In season 2, everyone warns her about Unalaq, but she doesn't listen to them, treat them like shit, do everything Unalaq tells her to do and almost destroy the world because of it. Like, she has a whole cast of people that she can talk any moment she wants, including her friends and the past avatars, she just doesn't try at all to listen or talk to them.

To be fair to the watery spirit bending, water also glows when you use it to heal. I think that glowing water soothing spirits in the way it soothes wounds is interesting! Honestly, even though it’s revealed Unalaq set Tonraq up by telling the soldiers to hide in the spirit woods, Tonraq is still responsible for his own banishment. His brother only told the soldiers to hide in the spirit forest because he knew Tonraq had no respect for the spirits and would’ve destroyed that forest. It was still ultimately his choice and his fault. It’s the classic lead a horse to water kind of thing. I honestly wish they cut our Unalaq wanting to be a dark avatar, and just have his motivation to be to restore the water tribes connection to the spirits. Maybe he didn’t want to banish his brother, but was afraid he would lead their people away from their traditions if he became chief. And when he sees how secular the Southern Tribe has become, due in part to Tonraq’s influence, it only confirmed his suspicions. Rather than being a power hungry villain, the civil war conflict could just been about whether or not bringing back the spirits to the water tribe is a good thing. You could even keep Vaatu in this storyline. Maybe Tonraq meets him after going through the portal. And mirroring how he manipulated Wan into feeling him from Rava, Vaatu lies to Tonraq telling him he was the portal guardian and that the avatar imprisoned him for trying to stop him from closing the portals. He tells Tonraq that Wan absorbed Rava by force, and that he needs his help to free his “friend”. I feel like this storyline makes Tonraq a more compelling villain rather than wanting to cover the world in darkness because reasons.

They butchered his character halfway through the season!? When was there anything to butcher and how was he not horribly written at first because he's an idiot as soon as this episode when his invasion of the South which doesn't have anything to do with opening the portals and only impedes him because it makes it so that Korra sides against him. Also, James Ohlen the lead game designer of KOTOR the video game that has the greatest plot twist in video game history has stated "Ten percent of your audience needs to figure out your twist before it happens for it to feel truly natural" I am willing to bet my life that a lot more than ten percent saw the twist the Unalaq was a villain coming from a mile away because it's so obvious. Admittedly I partly knew the twist when going into the season so it shouldn't surprise you that I couldn't have been less surprised when it was revealed he was the villain but that doesn't change the fact that it's really obvious. I also have no idea, not a single character figures out the obvious fact that he's up to no good, I mean in this episode alone he pretty clearly manipulates events so that his brother attacks a spiritual place and he just so happens to be the only one with the power to swoop in and save the day and also just so happens to benefit from his father being in trouble a lot and keep in mind this is just one part of this episode if I listed every moment where all of the characters should have immediately realized Unalaq was up to no good we'd be here all day. I appreciate the compliment towards the animation studio for this portion of the season. Everyone tends to give them crap for the off-model character drawings, but like this was a completely different team brought on very last minute to work on Book 2. And Korra notoriously has much more complex character designs than ATLA did, making it a much more demanding project on an animation level. You're asking a new team with no prior experience animating these characters, this world, this fighting style, etc, and with WAY less pre-production time to boot to deliver work on par with Book 1? Ain't no way. The fact that the episodes they worked on look as good as they do, and as you said have some of the best bending animation in the whole series on top of that, is genuinely a triumph and shows they were more than capable for the task, had they only been given more time to get used to these designs. This doesn't remove the problems with the jank on the characters, but I feel the animators deserve more props for the work they did given the situation. Especially given this team was under Studio Pierrot (the ones behind Naruto, Naruto Shippuden, Bleach, Tokyo Ghoul, Black Clover, etc) a studio who- to anyone familiar with basically any of those shows- is already notorious for forcing very talented artists to churn out sloppy work to meet unfair deadlines. Just felt like the efforts they made should be more appreciated for the good stuff they brought to the table.

Something I don’t like about Spirit bending is how it’s just an auto-fix to the issue of the spirits being mad. It makes Spirits seem less like alien entities with their own rules to walking problems that needs to be waved away. Spirits in Avatar had their own rules and when violated caused them to act out, Haibei was a Forest spirit so violating his forest made him mad, Aang showed Haibei that his forest will return and others share in his pain, thus calming the Spirit. Wan Shi Tang was a knowledge spirit who expressly was against his knowledge being used for war or to harm others, so he got angry when the Gaang stole from him. It didn’t even seem he was angry about being lied to just his precious knowledge being used which is cool. The Spirits having these internal rules means you can solve them like a puzzle but with Spirit bending it’s like having a cheat code to go to the end of the game.
@madrone333 місяці тому
Yeah, and it also makes it seem like the reasons the Spirits are angry don’t even need to be addressed, like their problems aren’t legitimate, and they just need to ‘calm the Spirits down’ or ‘purify them’ or whatever and suddenly the Spirits won’t be upset anymore.

Scythes would actually be awful for combat because the blade is purposely askewed to allow the user to stand while swinging it to cut at shin level. It's actually very likely that if you actually hit something sturdy with a scythe a handful or so times then the blade may just break off due to it not being designed for that. There was no bending involved there it was just a pure feat of strength. So how the rest of the show treats bending power levels doesn't really matter in this case.

i’ll never get over the fact that it’s the WINTER SOLSTICE and they show the SOUTH POLE in DAYLIGHT and that goes since atla as well

@santawithaflamethrower27583 місяці тому
I agree on the scyth thing. Its horribly unpracticle. Farmers use them cause they can collect large swaths of crops. trying to fight someone with them would just work horribly. like imagine if you had a broom and were trying to hit them with the flat bit where the pole ends. Its just unviable when an axe is a much better and easier option

I'm still wondering who made Wan's statue. As far as is shown in the show, all his friends are dead/sent to the spirit world. And he died in the middle of nowhere. Did his Inner-carpet take a course in carpentry and make it?

Taking paralels to religion, the cristian/catholic bible was not written until 300 years after Jesus died. Maybe after some avatars (after the avatar has been a reknown figure), they describe how Wan looks like.

@J__T3 місяці тому
Personally the defense used should've been the season 3 finale where a weakened, poisoned Korra goes glow and is shown to be far stronger; however, I think OA was meaning when have we ever seen evidence of increased strength in the past as in before season 2, and for that you'd have to define words like 'strength' and 'power'. Aang, for instance, could pull off crazy bending feats with the glow that literally could be defined as the 'culmination of all previous Avatars' as in thousands upon thousands of benders bending all at once in one singular form. Aang never actually gains muscular strength at any point; the closest I can think of is pushing back Ozai at first glow but Ozai was physically stunned at seeing a Fully Realized Avatar and Aang did use airbending, so no I don't think so if we are defining strength as muscular strength which is how OA seems to mean it.

what we learnt in atla was cultural lore. isn't it cool and real when cultural lore is not entirely true and you can cut into layers? and then it still doesn't contradict the wan story. with regards to oma and shu myth, i think they themselves were not real. they are likely an etiologic tale to explain omashu's early history and name where now omashu itself works as a testimony of the truth of the myth. it's similar to the explanations of the place names in the hebrew bible and some other traditions. but humans likely did learn earthbending as an art from badgermoles just like they learnt firebending from dragons (demonstrated by wan himself)
